feat(create-db): hand the claim URL on in every output mode - #86
A database from create-db is deleted after its TTL unless someone opens the claim URL and claims it. The default output shows the claim URL. The non-interactive modes, which agents and scripts use, make it easy to lose:
--quiet never printed it.
--env only wrote it to the file.
--json included it, but nothing told the agent that the user has to open it.
Changes
--json adds a nextStep string after the existing fields. It says when the database is deleted and tells the agent to give the user the claim URL, which it includes. Existing fields are unchanged.
--quiet prints one claim line to stderr. Stdout is still only the connection string, so $(npx create-db -q) behaves the same.
--env prints the same claim line after "Wrote DATABASE_URL and CLAIM_URL to …".
Claim URL gets utm_content=<mode> (default, json, env or quiet). Claim page views can then be split by the mode that produced them. The tag is appended without re-encoding the existing params, and starts a query string if the URL has none. The claim worker is unchanged: it ignores the extra parameter, and the claim page returns 200 with it.
--json --env <path> now writes the env file. Before, the --json branch returned before the write, so asking for both gave JSON and no file. If the write fails, the JSON is still printed (so the connection string and claim URL aren't lost) and the command exits with code 1.
Deletion time in the claim line and the default output now includes the time zone (for example 10/30/2026, 9:02:10 AM UTC). An agent in a UTC sandbox that relays the time to a user elsewhere no longer gives a time that's off by their offset.
--json failure exits wait for stdout and stderr to flush before exiting with code 1, so JSON written to a pipe isn't cut off. (process.exitCode + return doesn't work here: trpc-cli calls process.exit(0) after the handler returns.)
--version reads the version from package.json. It printed a hard-coded 1.1.0, so 1.2.0 and 1.2.1 both reported 1.1.0. The bundle inlines only the version string.
The programmatic API (create()) is unchanged.
READMEs updated.
Release
This bumps create-db, create-pg and create-postgres to 1.3.0 in package.json instead of adding a changeset. The release job publishes the version in package.json, and main still says 1.2.0 while npm already has 1.2.1. Every run since March has failed with "You cannot publish over the previously published versions" and still reported success (see the run for #85's merge). With 1.3.0, merging publishes all three.
Example --json output:
{
"success": true,
"connectionString": "postgresql://…",
"claimUrl": "https://create-db.prisma.io/claim?projectID=proj_…&utm_source=create-db&utm_medium=cli&utm_content=json",
"deletionDate": "2026-10-29T16:08:49.497Z",
"region": "us-east-1",
"name": "…",
"projectId": "proj_…",
"nextStep": "The database is deleted at 2026-10-29T16:08:49.497Z unless the user claims it, which keeps it for free. Give the user this claim URL: https://create-db.prisma.io/claim?projectID=proj_…"
}
Testing
pnpm typecheck and pnpm build pass in packages/create-db.
vitest run: 73 pass, 1 skipped (the services integration suite). This includes new tests for withOutputMode, formatDeletionDate, formatJsonResult and printClaimReminder, a new --json --env CLI test, --version/-V tests that now check the exact package version, and the create.test.ts tests that create real databases against the production worker.
Smoke test against a local mock worker (CREATE_DB_WORKER_URL), including --json --env with a writable and an unwritable path, and the deletion time under TZ=UTC, America/Los_Angeles and Europe/Berlin:
--json adds nextStep.
--quiet keeps stdout to the connection string, with the claim line on stderr.
--env writes the tagged CLAIM_URL and prints the claim line.
Default prints the tagged URL.
Preview build create-db@pr86 (1.3.1-pr86-feat-claim-link-handoff-40873291203.0, head 901b092) run against the real service:
--version and -V print the preview's own version.
--json --env writes the file, and its CLAIM_URL matches the JSON.
--quiet under TZ=UTC: stdout is only the connection string; the claim line, with UTC, is on stderr.
Default output shows the tagged URL and the time zone.
The tagged claim page returns 200.
Open questions
Is stderr in --quiet acceptable? It's one line, and without it the claim URL is gone and the database will be deleted.
Database creation results now include a claim reminder and deletion date. JSON output also provides a next step for claiming the database before deletion.
Claim URLs now identify the CLI output mode.
Environment-file output includes the claim URL and deletion time.
Bug Fixes
JSON results are still displayed if writing the requested environment file fails; the command reports the error and exits unsuccessfully.
Documentation
Clarified where the claim URL appears for quiet, environment-file, and JSON output, and how to keep the database.
A database from create-db is deleted unless someone claims it, but the
non-interactive modes made the claim URL easy to lose: --quiet never
printed it, --env only wrote it to the file, and --json left it to the
agent to notice.
- --json adds a nextStep field telling the agent to give the user the
claim URL before the deletion time.
- --quiet prints the claim URL to stderr; stdout is still only the
connection string.
- --env prints the claim URL and deletion time after writing the file.
- The claim URL carries the output mode as utm_content, so claim page
visits can be split by mode.

Walkthrough
The CLI now tags claim URLs with the selected output mode, adds claim guidance to JSON output, and prints claim reminders to stdout or stderr. Documentation describes these outputs. The create-db, create-pg, and create-postgres packages change to version 1.3.0.

Summary
Output helpers and tests packages/create-db/src/cli/output.ts, packages/create-db/__tests__/output.test.ts
Output helpers append an output-mode parameter to the claim URL, add a nextStep field to JSON results, format deletion dates with a time-zone name, and print claim reminders to stdout or stderr. Tests cover URL handling, JSON formatting, deletion dates, and reminder streams.
Create command paths apply output modes and print claim reminders. JSON output is printed when environment-file writing fails, before the command exits with status 1. The test checks JSON and environment-file output. Documentation describes claim URL output and environment-file behavior. All three package versions change to 1.3.0.
A failed env-file write can leave piped JSON incomplete, potentially losing the connection and claim details. Fix this or accept the bounded risk before merging.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title follows conventional commit style and names the main change: the claim URL is now handed on in every output mode (--json, --quiet, --env, default). The changeset matches this. It adds a nextStep field to JSON output, prints a claim reminder to stderr in quiet mode, prints a reminder after env-file writes, and appends a mode-specific utm_content parameter to claim URLs. The title does not mention the version bumps, but those are minor and need not appear.

The release job publishes the version in package.json. main still says
1.2.0 while npm has 1.2.1, so every publish since March has failed. Bump
the version here instead of adding a changeset.
Also start a query string when the claim URL has none, so the output-mode
tag doesn't depend on the claim URL's current shape.

… expiry
`--json --env <path>` returned before writing the env file, so agents
asking for both got JSON and no .env. The JSON branch now writes the file
first, still prints the JSON if the write fails, and exits with code 1 in
that case.
The deletion time printed by the claim reminder and the default output
had no time zone, so a time printed in a UTC sandbox and relayed to a
user elsewhere was off by their offset. Both now use one formatter that
includes the zone.

process.exit() right after printing can cut off output written to a pipe
on macOS. Wait for stdout and stderr to flush, then exit with code 1.
Setting process.exitCode and returning isn't enough here: trpc-cli calls
process.exit(0) after the handler returns, which would hide the failure.

`--version` printed a hard-coded 1.1.0, so 1.2.0 and 1.2.1 both reported
1.1.0. Import the version from package.json instead; the bundle inlines
only the version string. The version tests now check the exact version.

The platform skill copied by `prisma init` now tells the agent to give
the user the `create-db` claim URL and the deletion time.
`npx create-db@latest` makes a database that is deleted after 24 hours
unless someone opens its claim URL and claims it. When an agent runs the
command, it is often the only one that sees that URL. The skill already
explained the lifetime. It didn't say the user needs the URL.
- `skills/prisma-platform-core-concepts/SKILL.md`: one sentence in the
create-db paragraph that #363 added. The paragraph is rewrapped to 80
columns.
There are no changes to runtime behavior, `init` output or skill
installation. This follows the boundary that #363 recorded: database
guidance lives in the copied skill.
Related: prisma/create-db#86 makes `create-db --json` print a `nextStep`
with the same instruction, and makes `--quiet`/`--env` print the claim
URL.
## Validation
- Markdown-only change. No test reads this paragraph's text. CI's skill
packaging check covers the file.
