chore: update all dependencies, move the schema editor to Prisma 8 - #88
Updates every dependency to its latest version, moves the claim page's schema editor to Prisma 8, and fixes what the upgrade surfaced. Also includes the two agent-facing CLI fixes found while reviewing #86. One commit per area.
create-db CLI → 1.3.1
Plain progress when piped. clack's spinner animates even when stdout isn't a terminal, so agents running npx create-db without flags got hundreds of ◒◐◓◑ frames. Off a terminal it now prints plain step lines.
JSON for argument errors.--json (or -j in a group like -jq) with an unknown --region or a bad --ttl printed commander's usage text. It now prints {"success": false, "error": "invalid_arguments", "message": …} and exits 1.
Dependencies to latest (clack 1.8, trpc-cli 0.17, execa 10, tsdown 0.23, vitest 5, TypeScript 7). Bumps the three CLIs to 1.3.1 so merging publishes them.
Node.js 20.12+ is now declared in engines for the three CLIs: @clack/prompts 1.8 imports util.styleText, which Node 18 lacks. Development needs Node.js 22.12+ (Vitest 5), and CI moves from Node 20 to the current LTS.
Schema editor on Prisma 8
API (schema-api-routes): push = contract emit + db update; pull = contract infer.
When a push would lose data, Prisma 8 says exactly what, and the API returns it as dataLoss: ["public.User.name"]. A force push sends back the subjects the user confirmed and deletes only those, instead of Prisma 7's --force-reset of the whole database. If the database changed in between, it asks again with the new list. Questions that --delete can't answer (a rename, an access change) are reported as errors.
Schema errors return 400 with each finding on the user's own line numbers, e.g. Line 3: Cannot find type "Strng"., plus a hint for Prisma 7 generator/datasource blocks.
The connection string goes through the environment and execFile, never a shell.
Editor: default schema, autocomplete and hover docs follow Prisma 8 PSL (@onCreate(cuid(2)), @onUpdate(now()), sql`…` defaults; no generator/datasource, @updatedAt, @db.*, @ignore). The confirm modal lists what gets deleted.
Next 16: lint moves to the ESLint CLI (next lint is gone), and the 57 findings it reported are fixed.
Removes the unused prisma, pg and @types/pg dependencies.
Studio: @prisma/studio-core 0.34 dropped its Prisma Postgres HTTP client, so /api/studio is now a full BFF handler on postgres.js. It adds transaction, so Studio's multi-row saves are atomic. Because the route is public and now opens TCP connections, it only connects to db.prisma.io hosts on port 5432, with a 10 s connect timeout.
Builds stay on webpack (next build --webpack). Under pnpm, OpenNext maps Turbopack's hashed externals to .pnpm/postgres@3.4.9/node_modules/postgres, a deep import that skips exports. That bundles postgres.js's Node build instead of its workerd one, and every Studio query timed out. That OpenNext bug is fixed on its main branch (fix: resolve Turbopack hashed externals through their symlink under pnpm opennextjs/opennextjs-cloudflare#1438) but not released yet; once it ships, the build can move to Turbopack.
middleware.ts stays: Next 16 deprecates it in favor of proxy.ts, which runs on Node.js. OpenNext supports proxy.ts on Workers only experimentally, while edge middleware is stable.
create-db-worker: @cloudflare/vitest-pool-workers → @cloudflare/vitest-plugin, and its npm lockfile is regenerated. schema-api-routes gets a regenerated npm lockfile too (Vercel builds from it).
TypeScript 7 everywhere except claim-db-worker, which stays on TS 6.0.3 because typescript-eslint doesn't support 7 yet.
Verification
Build, typecheck and lint pass for all workspaces.
Tests: claim-db-worker 11, create-db-worker 32, create-db 76 + 1 skipped, including the suites that create real databases.
Schema API, run locally against real Prisma Postgres databases:
Pull an empty database, push, pull it back, a destructive push (asks first, names public.User.name), force push, pull.
Force push without the confirmed list returns 400; with a list that doesn't match, it asks again; with the confirmed list, it pushes.
A pulled schema pushes back unchanged.
Every autocomplete snippet is accepted.
Claim worker built with OpenNext and run in workerd (opennextjs-cloudflare preview):
Studio's query, transaction and SQL errors work against a real database.
Studio refuses example.com, db.prisma.io:6543 and db.prisma.io.evil.com.
/, /web/schema, /web/connect and /web/studio render.
Connect-page steps run in an empty folder, ending in a typed query against a claimed database.
CLI built from this branch: no spinner frames when piped; -jq --region bad returns JSON with exit 1.
Notes
Audit: pnpm audit goes from 514 Dependabot alerts on main to 17 advisories here. 41 came through the vercel CLI, an unused runtime dependency of schema-api-routes, which is removed. The one remaining critical, dompurify, is in monaco-editor, which is only a dev dependency for types; the editor loads Monaco from a CDN.
Deploy order: /push-force now requires the confirmed dataLoss list, so deploy schema-api-routes and the claim worker together.
Prisma 8: prisma orm init in rc.28 writes a starter that its own contract emit rejects; that's already fixed on prisma/orm main. Separately, @db.Text errors suggest a Text type that doesn't exist (a plain String is already text); I'm reporting that to the ORM team.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
The database creation CLI can return structured JSON errors when JSON mode is enabled and provides readable progress messages in non-interactive terminals.
Schema updates show which data-loss subjects require consent; forced updates proceed only after all affected changes are confirmed.
Studio supports queries, transactions, and SQL linting through supported PostgreSQL connections.
The schema editor offers updated Prisma guidance and suggestions for model IDs and timestamps.
Bug Fixes
Invalid CLI arguments report more specific messages, including the offending value.
Schema push and pull errors provide clearer details.
Documentation
Development setup instructions now require Node.js 22.12 or newer; published CLIs require Node.js 20.12 or newer.
Agents and scripts run create-db without a terminal, and two things went
wrong there:
- The spinner animated anyway: clack's spinner (0.11 and 1.8) never checks
that stdout is a terminal, so piped output filled with hundreds of
frames before the result. Off a terminal, progress is now plain step
lines.
- --json with a bad argument (an unknown --region, an invalid --ttl)
printed commander's usage text, because the error is raised while
parsing, before the command can print JSON. With --json (or -j in a
short-flag group) these now print {"success": false, "error":
"invalid_arguments", "message"} on stdout, the message on stderr, and
exit with code 1. trpc-cli takes a subcommand's error output and exit
from buildProgram's params, so both buildProgram and run get them.
Also updates the CLI's dependencies to their latest versions (clack 1.8,
trpc-cli 0.17, execa 10, dotenv 18, tsdown 0.23, vitest 5, TypeScript 7).
trpc-cli 0.17 rejects an invalid --ttl while parsing, so the --ttl tests
check the explanation rather than zod's "Input validation failed".
Bumps create-db, create-pg and create-postgres to 1.3.1 so the release
publishes them.

@cloudflare/vitest-pool-workers is deprecated and renamed to
@cloudflare/vitest-plugin, which is configured as a Vite plugin
(cloudflareTest) with its cloudflare:test types under
@cloudflare/vitest-plugin/types. Tests now spy on globalThis.fetch: the
Workers types have no Node `global`, which the old package's types hid.
Updates wrangler, vitest and TypeScript to their latest versions and
regenerates the app's npm lockfile, which still pinned the old ones.

The schema editor's push, force push and pull ran Prisma 7 (`db push`
with --accept-data-loss / --force-reset, `db pull`). They now use the
Prisma 8 CLI in a scratch project per request:
- push: `contract emit` then `db update`. When applying the schema would
lose data, `db update` lists exactly what (e.g. public.User.name); the
response keeps requiresForceReset and adds dataLoss with those subjects.
- push-force: answers each of those questions with --delete, instead of
resetting the whole database. Anything else it can't answer from a yes
(a rename, an access change) stays an error.
- pull: `contract infer`. An empty database infers a contract with no
declarations, which is reported as isEmpty.
Prisma 8 only reads PSL that starts with "// use prisma-8", so the API
adds it when missing and reports error lines numbered as the user's
schema. Schema errors now return 400 with each finding and its line
(e.g. "Line 3: Cannot find type \"Strng\"."), with a hint for Prisma 7
generator/datasource blocks, instead of a generic 500.
The three routes shared a copy of the temp-project setup; it's one helper
now. The connection string reaches Prisma through the environment and
commands run with execFile, so the header value never passes through a
shell. The unused `prisma` dependency is removed (each request installs
its own pinned CLI), dependencies are updated, and TypeScript 7 needs an
explicit rootDir.

…on postgres.js
Prisma 8:
- The editor's default schema, autocomplete and hover docs follow Prisma 8
PSL: no generator/datasource blocks; @onCreate(cuid(2) | uuid() | now())
and @onUpdate(now()) in place of @default(cuid()/uuid()) and @updatedat;
sql`...` in place of dbgenerated(); no @db.* or @ignore. Every snippet
was pushed to a real database through the schema API.
- The data-loss modal lists what the push deletes, from the API's
dataLoss, instead of warning that the whole database is reset.
- Push and pull errors show the API's explanation instead of
"Network error ... 400 Bad Request - <json>".
- The connect page walks through Prisma 8: install, `prisma orm init`
(--skip-install), `contract infer`, `contract emit`, and a query
through src/prisma/db.ts. Each step was run against a claimed database.
Upgrades:
- Next.js 16 builds with Turbopack by default. Builds stay on webpack: with
pnpm, OpenNext maps Turbopack's hashed externals to
".pnpm/<pkg>@<version>/node_modules/<pkg>", a deep import that skips the
package's exports, so postgres.js's Node build (node:net) was bundled
instead of its workerd build and every Studio query timed out. The
unused webpack fallback and the stale @prisma/client externals are
removed; postgres stays external so OpenNext picks its workerd build.
- middleware.ts stays: Next 16 deprecates it for proxy.ts, but proxy runs
on Node.js, which OpenNext documents as experimental and unsupported on
workerd.
- @prisma/studio-core 0.34 dropped its Prisma Postgres HTTP client.
/api/studio is now a BFF handler on postgres.js that also serves
"transaction", so Studio's multi-row saves are atomic, and "sql-lint".
- `next lint` was removed in Next 16 (and stopped at a setup prompt
before, with no ESLint config). Lint now runs the ESLint CLI with
eslint-config-next, and the 57 findings it reported are fixed. This app
stays on TypeScript 6 because typescript-eslint does not support 7 yet.
- Removes the unused prisma, pg and @types/pg dependencies.

The pull request updates Prisma schema inference and database updates, the claim database schema editor, and Studio query execution. It also adds JSON error output and non-terminal spinner messages to the create-db CLI, and updates worker and repository tooling, tests, and types.
A shared runner prepares temporary Prisma projects, executes commands, reads contracts, and formats diagnostics. Package dependencies and the TypeScript root directory also change.
Schema pull and push routes apps/schema-api-routes/src/routes/schema/*
Pull uses contract inference and reports whether the schema is empty. Push routes emit contracts, update the database, and handle deletion consent.
Schema editor and data-loss confirmation apps/claim-db-worker/app/web/schema/page.tsx, apps/claim-db-worker/lib/prismaSchemaEditor/*
The editor loads saved schema content, displays reported data-loss subjects, and uses updated error handling. Monaco types, completions, hover text, and the default schema change.
The instructions use ORM initialization, contract inference and emission, and queries through the generated ORM.
