What

The writer now gets every AES-GCM IV from the CryptoService encryptor added in the previous PR. It never builds or picks an IV; it records the IV each encryptor returns.

  • Payload: the payload key gets one encryptor per writeStream. With the default provider, that means a random fixed field per stream, so reusing a KeyInfo through keyMiddleware no longer repeats IVs.
  • Metadata: with a single split and identical manifest and payload keys, the metadata is the payload encryptor's first call. Otherwise each split key gets its own encryptor, cached by sid. Key access objects that share a sid no longer share a metadata IV.
  • Fallback: providers without createAesGcmEncryptor get the SDK-side deterministic encryptor through their caller-IV encrypt.
  • Limits: the guard enforces each encryptor's invocationLimit with IvExhaustionError, and rejects malformed results.
  • Deprecations: SplitKey.encrypt now requires an explicit IV. generateIvBinary and generateInitializationVector are deprecated, and they and the fallback IV from SplitKey.generateKey now draw from the injected randomBytes.
  • Docs: the IV contract is documented on EncryptKeyMiddleware and keyMiddleware.

IV layout with the default provider:

IV = fixedField (8 random bytes, fresh per encryptor) || invocation (uint32 BE)

single split: payload encryptor invocation 0 -> key access object metadata
                                    invocation 1..n -> payload segments, in stream order
multiple splits: payload encryptor invocation 0..n-1 -> payload segments
                 one encryptor per split key -> that split's metadata

Why

Random per-segment IVs accumulate collision risk according to the birthday bound, and repeating an IV under one AES-GCM key breaks both confidentiality and integrity. Moving IV generation behind the CryptoService lets module-backed providers keep it inside their FIPS boundary. See the DSPX-4492 ADR and spec/DSPX-4496.md.

Wire compatibility

There is no manifest schema change. Every segment still stores its 12-byte IV before the ciphertext and 16-byte tag. Readers take each IV from that prefix and never recompute it, and they still read random-IV TDFs written before this change.

java-sdk#393 uses an all-zero fixed field. That is wire compatible with this PR; the random fixed field is a writer-side hardening choice.

How to test

cd lib && npm test. New end-to-end tests:

  • the default layout: metadata at invocation 0, then segments counting up under one random fixed field;
  • two TDFs sharing one key get disjoint IVs;
  • an empty payload uses no payload IV;
  • a spy RBG provider whose IVs are used for the metadata and every segment, with the caller-IV encrypt never called for data;
  • IvExhaustionError at a provider limit of 3;
  • a separate encryptor per split key;
  • the fallback provider reproducing the deterministic layout;
  • a fallback provider returning a short tag fails the write;
  • key access objects sharing a sid get distinct metadata IVs.

The earlier version of this branch passed the full platform-xtest cross-SDK matrix (go, java, and js at main and v0.4.0).

Risk

This is the change in the series that touches crypto. It alters the IVs written into every new TDF, though not the format. Please review tdf.ts, encryption-information.ts, and how an encryptor is chosen for each key. EC and ML-KEM key wrapping still use the caller-IV encrypt; moving them is a follow-up.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • AES-GCM encryption now manages initialization vectors per encryption stream and records the generated vectors with encrypted payloads and metadata.
    • Added a specific error when an AES-GCM invocation limit is reached, helping prevent writes from continuing with exhausted encryption state.
    • Increased the default encryption segment size from 1 MiB to 2 MiB.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Encryption now checks that encrypted output matches the expected size and rejects malformed results.

📝 Walkthrough

TDF writing now uses AES-GCM encryptors that issue IVs and return ciphertext and tags. The changes add invocation-limit handling, metadata IV recording, encrypted-size checks, and a 2 MiB default segment size.

Changes: AES-GCM encryption and TDF writing

Layer / File(s) Summary
IV and cipher primitives
lib/src/errors.ts, lib/src/index.ts, lib/tdf3/src/ciphers/*, lib/tdf3/src/ciphers/symmetric-cipher-base.ts, lib/tests/mocha/unit/aes-gcm-cipher.spec.ts, lib/tests/mocha/unit/tdf.spec.ts
Adds a counter that combines an 8-byte fixed field with a 4-byte invocation value. Adds IV-exhaustion errors, AES-GCM IV-length validation, and encrypted-payload size calculations. Unit tests cover counter behavior, exhaustion, size predictions, and invalid IV lengths.
Encryptor contract and factory
lib/tdf3/src/crypto/*, lib/tdf3/src/ciphers/aes-gcm-encryptor.ts, lib/tdf3/index.ts, lib/tests/mocha/unit/aes-gcm-encryptor.spec.ts
Adds public types for provider-supplied AES-GCM encryptors and a default deterministic encryptor. The factory selects a provider encryptor when available or uses the SDK fallback. A guard enforces invocation limits and validates result lengths.
TDF metadata and payload encryption
lib/tdf3/src/models/encryption-information.ts, lib/tdf3/src/tdf.ts, lib/tests/mocha/encrypt-decrypt.spec.ts
TDF writing passes encryptors to metadata generation and encrypts payload segments with returned IVs, ciphertext, and tags. Metadata records each IV, and the manifest records the first metadata IV. Tests cover provider and fallback encryptors, split keys, exhaustion, and payload validation.
Segment sizing and related documentation
lib/tdf3/src/client/builders.ts, lib/tdf3/src/client/index.ts, lib/tdf3/src/utils/index.ts, lib/src/opentdf.ts, spec/DSPX-4496.md
The writer default segment size changes to 2 MiB. TDF writing validates segment-size inputs and uses cipher size calculations instead of a probe encryption. Documentation describes the encryptor contract, key sharing, and segment-size defaults.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 41899

The change builds AES-GCM IVs from a random fixed field plus a counter, and the wire format is unchanged. No merge-blocking risk was identified; the remaining comment is only about a clearer error message.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d729a

Counter-based IVs prevent reuse within a stream, but streams encrypted with the same key still depend on independently drawn 8-byte values not colliding. The impact would be serious if a collision occurred; the likelihood depends on how often an application reuses keys.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Repeated-key streams rely on collision-free draws from a 64-bit fixed-field space; equal draws repeat the metadata IV and corresponding payload IVs under the same key.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A fixed-field collision matters across encryptions that actually reuse an AES-GCM key; the inspected public path creates fresh encryption state per call, but permits caller-supplied key middleware. The evidence does not establish cross-tenant key sharing or production reuse volume.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — If an attacker can obtain ciphertexts from enough streams encrypted under one reused key, matching 8-byte fixed fields are visible in their IV prefixes. The repeated key/IV pairs would endanger confidentiality and authenticity; no collision or practical attack volume is established here.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Counter validation and exhaustion protect within-stream IV separation. They do not compare fixed fields between streams; cross-stream separation depends on the configured random-byte provider.
  • observed — Multiple key-access objects with the same split identifier use the same metadata IV and split key within one manifest. The base implementation also reused its KeyInfo IV for these objects; this condition was not introduced by the counter.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — An IV exhaustion or ciphertext-size mismatch throws rather than silently emitting a wrapped IV or recording an inconsistent segment size.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define an explicit per-key stream budget or enforce unique fixed fields when applications intentionally reuse keys, so the cross-stream IV guarantee does not rest on an unbounded sequence of 64-bit random draws.

Reject a fallback payload that is shorter than the tag.

The fallback path can receive a service result with no authTag and a payload shorter than 16 bytes. In that case, output.slice(-16) returns the whole payload, and output.slice(0, -16) returns an empty array. The guard then reports a tag-length or ciphertext-length error. That message does not describe the real fault, which is a missing tag. The guard still blocks the bad output, so the impact is limited to the error diagnosis. Add an explicit check that gives a clear message.

Route payload segment and key access object metadata encryption through
the per-key AesGcmEncryptor from the CryptoService. The writer never builds
or picks an IV; it records the IV each encryptor returns.

- The payload key gets one encryptor per writeStream. With the default
  provider, that means a random fixed field per stream, so reusing a
  `KeyInfo` through `keyMiddleware` no longer repeats IVs.
- With a single split, and the manifest and payload keys identical, the
  metadata is the payload encryptor's first call. Otherwise, each split key
  gets its own encryptor, cached by `sid`, so key access objects that share
  a `sid` no longer share a metadata IV.
- Providers without `createAesGcmEncryptor` get the SDK-side deterministic
  fallback through their caller-IV `encrypt`.
- `SplitKey.encrypt` now requires an explicit IV. `generateIvBinary` and
  `generateInitializationVector` are deprecated and draw from the injected
  `randomBytes`, as does the fallback IV from `SplitKey.generateKey`.
- The IV contract is documented on `EncryptKeyMiddleware` and
  `keyMiddleware`.

There is no wire format change: every segment still stores its own 12-byte
IV, and readers never recompute one.
