Expose opt-in private management APIs for hbbs/hbbr so Console can report native registrations and active relay sessions, replace persistent device ID/IP bans, and request relay session closure without changing the client protocol.

  • Validate per-service startup configuration overrides and redact key values.
  • Enforce bans on protocol requests and both relay endpoints, cancel matching sessions across the entire transfer including bandwidth waits, and make pending-pair insertion atomic.
  • Serialize ban persistence outside the protocol admission lock; the update owns persistence and activation even after an HTTP caller disconnects. Restore saved policy before protocol startup independently of HTTP listener enablement.
  • Canonicalize forwarded client IPs consistently at both WebSocket ingresses and policy matching, including endpoint-form and bracketed IPv6 addresses. Preserve the existing trusted-proxy assumptions and actual socket-IP checks.
  • Add management regressions and a managed Docker image; start the private API after protocol sockets bind and keep the listener disabled by default.

CI scope

Extend existing PR/push Test CI with the production managed-image build and locked dependency/all-target checks. Remove the temporary manual dispatch trigger. No standalone temporary workflow remains.

Validation

The pinned common submodule and CI-resolved lockfile are retained. CI passed on a18a4ab: Compile Check, Run Tests (including endpoint-form IP ban regressions) and Managed server image. No local compilation, application execution or tests were performed.

Deployment limits

Management requires independent Bearer credentials and private networking. WebSocket forwarded headers require a proxy that overwrites them and restricted direct reachability. Relay target IDs are client-reported, not authenticated identities of both endpoints. Direct connections are outside relay cancellation. Runtime user and writable shared-data permissions remain deployment-controlled.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Adds an opt-in management API for hbbs and hbbr, including managed configuration, status routes, session tracking, and ban rules. Both services apply managed settings and enforce ban checks in connection paths. The change also adds a managed Docker image build and CI validation.

Changes

Management services and deployment

Layer / File(s) Summary
Management API, configuration, and state
management-schema.json, src/management.rs
Defines hbbs and hbbr settings and adds validation, authenticated API routes, ban persistence, session tracking, and tests.
Service configuration and management startup
src/lib.rs, src/main.rs, src/hbbr.rs, src/peer.rs, src/rendezvous_server/server.rs, src/relay_server/server.rs
Exposes the management module, applies managed settings during service initialization, and starts management services. hbbs publishes peer snapshots when management is enabled.
Ban enforcement and relay sessions
src/relay_server/*, src/rendezvous_server/*, src/management.rs
Adds ban checks to rendezvous and relay paths. Relay pairing stores pending-peer metadata, opens managed sessions, reports usage, and handles session cancellation.
Managed image and build validation
.dockerignore, .github/workflows/test.yaml, docker-managed/Dockerfile, docs/management.md
Adds a two-stage managed Docker image build, CI validation, Docker build-context exclusions, and management documentation.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 98b65

In proxied deployments that forward an IP with a port or brackets, a banned client may pass the forwarded-IP check. Normalize that address before merging, or explicitly accept this narrow exposure.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 98b65

The management interface is disabled by default and protected by a bearer credential. Policy updates and session cancellation have meaningful safeguards, but forwarded client addresses can fail to match the new IP bans. Effective exposure also depends on private networking, proxy configuration, and deployment permissions that are not established here.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The new hbbs ban gate compares forwarded client addresses against canonical bare-IP rules without validating the forwarded representation. An endpoint-form value such as 192.0.2.1:443 does not match a ban for 192.0.2.1. When the proxy socket IP and message target ID are unbanned, that forwarded-IP policy check permits the request. Practical exposure depends on proxy output or header control; direct clients cannot evade a ban on their actual socket IP merely by changing this header.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — A valid management credential has service-instance-wide authority: it can read administrative data and replace the complete ban policy, and on hbbr request closure of any registered relay session. Authorization is not tenant-scoped. The inspected paths do not demonstrate host execution or cross-environment authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The forwarded-address mismatch permits deployment-dependent evasion of the new hbbs client-IP rule when an unbanned proxy conveys an endpoint-form address or an attacker-controlled alternative. It does not bypass an actual socket-IP ban. Header trust already existed at base, and no deployed proxy configuration is available to establish exploitation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Every administrative route is covered by bearer authorization, and listener startup requires a credential of at least 32 characters. Network privacy is a deployment obligation rather than an enforced bind-address restriction. Local configuration-file writers also receive startup-setting authority over validated settings such as bind addresses and keys.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Policy-update ownership outlives an HTTP caller disconnect. Persistence failure prevents activation, filesystem work occurs outside the admission lock, and startup restoration recovers a policy written before process interruption. Temporary-file rename provides replacement atomicity, but the implementation does not explicitly synchronize file and directory contents for power-loss durability.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Establish one validated, canonical client-IP representation at proxy ingress and use it consistently for stored peer identity and policy matching. An explicit trusted-proxy policy and rejection of malformed forwarded values would strengthen the pre-existing deployment trust assumption.

Treat non-root execution as optional hardening. The image defaults to root when launched without a user override, but the tracked deployments do not use this managed image. The managed deployment and permission enforcement are supplied by the Console repository. No repository requirement establishes that this image must run as non-root.

If the managed deployment does not override the user, non-root execution remains useful defense in depth. Ports 21115–21119 do not require root. Ensure the /data bind mount is writable by the selected user; an image-layer chown does not change bind-mount ownership.

Non-root execution is optional hardening, not a repository requirement. Leave
the `FROM debian:bookworm-slim` setup unchanged unless implementing it; if you
do, configure a dedicated user and ensure `/data` bind mounts are writable at
runtime, since image-layer ownership does not set bind-mount ownership.
