fix(html): preserve HTML structure and literal text - #530
Fix HTML parsing cases 9–19 in #525. Unclosed tags after prose stop capturing later paragraphs, HTML children and attributes survive parsing, and decoded text keeps its meaning when saved as Markdown.
For example, <pre><code>x < y</code></pre> contains a code element with the text x < y. Saving that document preserves the element and text.
Close unpaired tags after prose at the paragraph boundary, with closer lookup limited to the same container.
11
Read </br> as a line break.
12
Close an open <p> when another <p> starts.
13
Keep mixed images, breaks and custom elements in their paragraph.
14
Preserve text order around an unclosed tag in a list.
15
Parse <!--- ---> comments and remove synthetic paragraph wrappers from standalone comments.
16
Parse HTML tags and character references inside <pre> while keeping Markdown and whitespace literal.
17
Preserve author-written <p> elements and their attributes through autoUnwrap.
18
Keep the first duplicate HTML attribute.
19
Decode literal HTML text and preserve it through HTML rendering and Markdown saving, including nested inline tags.
Compatibility
<pre> now contains parsed HTML children rather than literal inner markup. Unmatched type-like text such as Array<string> stays text. Braced attribute values count balanced braces up to four levels; they are not evaluated as JavaScript.
Saved HTML text can use numeric character references for Markdown punctuation, such as *. This preserves the same text with Markdown parsing enabled or disabled. Standalone HTML images and breaks retain the existing paragraph rules.
…uplicate attribute
A JSX-style value (`<div style={{a: 1}}>`) failed CommonMark's attribute grammar, so the tag became text. The inline rule and the raw-block splitter now share one tag grammar that accepts balanced `{…}` values and comments ending in `--->`. A repeated attribute keeps its first value, as in HTML.
A stray `</br>` was dropped and a second `<p>` nested in the first; `</br>` is now a `<br>` and `<p>` closes an open `<p>`, except across table, cell, caption, button, template, object, marquee and applet boundaries. Inside an element that collects blocks, an image, `<br>`, component or custom element ended its paragraph; inline nodes now stay together and a lone author-written element is not wrapped. An open tag that follows text in its paragraph (`GET /apps/<id>`, `- **a** <b>c`) ends with its paragraph unless a later paragraph closes it, instead of swallowing later blocks or reordering a list item.
`<pre><code>` kept its tags and entities as literal text. In `<pre>` tags are now HTML and character references are decoded, as in `<textarea>`; `<style>` and `<script>` stay verbatim. An open tag with no closer inside the `<pre>` (`Array<string>`) stays text. Literal text with `markdown: false` decodes references like markdown text does. Decoded `<pre>` and `<textarea>` text is encoded again when written back as Markdown.
autoUnwrap treated the `<p>` in `<section><p class="c">…</p></section>` as a wrapper and moved its attributes onto the parent. Only the paragraph markdown adds is unwrapped now.
The <pre> scan searched the rest of the body for a closer at every open tag, and the prose-tag check scanned every later paragraph, so both grew quadratically (16k repeats took about 1s and 3.6s). Both now read a single index built once. A close tag in a nested container (a component, a blockquote) or past the end of the container no longer pairs with an open tag in the surrounding prose.
Decoded text was written back as it was read, so a reader saw characters the author had encoded: `&lt;` in <pre>, <textarea> or a literal block came out as `<` and then as `<`, and `<b>` saved as Markdown became a real <b> on reparse. Text in an HTML element now keeps a `&` that could start a reference as `&` in HTML, and a decoded `&…;` or `<tag` is encoded when saved as Markdown. <script> and <style> text is never re-encoded, also inside <pre>.
A comment inside <pre> no longer adds a newline in either output, <textarea>, <script> and <style> bodies are no longer wrapped in newlines, a <pre> after text is not re-indented, and the body of a raw element that follows text in a paragraph is no longer read as Markdown.
…ral text and <pre> markup as written
Raw-element closers and the prose check before an open tag are looked up in one pass per input instead of rescanned per tag. Closers in html_block expansions keep their container level, so html({ markdown: false }) pairs tags like the default. Raw tag names are read whole (script-x is not script). Literal text stays encoded under nested inline tags, and <pre> gets no added separators between sibling tags. Wall-clock ratio tests are replaced by large-input correctness tests.

Summary
HTML grammar and raw-element scanning packages/comark/src/internal/parse/html-tag.ts, packages/comark/src/plugins/html.ts, packages/comark/SPEC/HTML/README.md, packages/comark/test/html-tags.test.ts
The shared grammar recognizes HTML constructs and braced attribute values. The HTML plugin scans raw elements, applies tag-specific entity decoding, and recursively scans <pre> content. The specification and tests cover these parsing rules.
HTML tree assembly and implied closures packages/comark/src/internal/parse/tree.ts, packages/comark/src/internal/parse/utils.ts, packages/comark/src/types.ts, packages/comark/SPEC/HTML/README.md, packages/comark/test/html-tags.test.ts
The parser handles inline HTML classification, implied paragraph closures, and open tags with closers later in the same container. Attribute parsing supports braced values and keeps the first duplicate. Authored HTML paragraphs remain wrapped.
Raw and literal text serialization packages/comark/src/internal/stringify/handlers/comment.ts, packages/comark/src/internal/stringify/handlers/html.ts, packages/comark/src/internal/stringify/state.ts, packages/comark/SPEC/HTML/README.md, packages/comark/test/html-tags.test.ts, test/bundle.test.ts
The stringifier tracks raw-text and literal contexts, adjusts separators, and encodes literal text. The specification and tests cover raw-element output and text round trips. The bundle snapshot expects 408k (160 files).

Close the after-text frame when an older frame closes in the same paragraph.
When the paragraph starts with one open HTML frame, </div> pops that frame and leaves the returned node in the paragraph children. A later <b> then opens at stack index 0, while depthBefore is still 1. The state.htmlStack[depthBefore] lookup misses it, so the new frame remains open and captures the next paragraph. Track frames opened during the current paragraph instead of relying only on the pre-paragraph stack depth. Preserve the existing sibling emission for the frame that closed first.

meta.literal is not set for <script> and <style> bodies, so a body that starts with <!-- becomes a comment node.
pushRawBody calls pushText(..., decode = false) for <script> and <style>. Line 222 sets meta.literal only when decode is true. These bodies therefore reach the text processor in packages/comark/src/internal/parse/tree.ts (Line 702) without the flag, and tryCommentTag runs on them.
Trigger: <script><!-- x --></script>, or a legacy <style><!-- … --></style>. The body <!-- x --> becomes a [null, {}, ' x '] comment node instead of text. An unclosed <script><!-- x</script> opens a comment frame that can capture following content.
The comment on Line 221 gives the reason for the flag: the text is not a comment. That reason applies whether or not the text was decoded. Set the flag unconditionally.

Fold the list-leakage case into the table, merge the inline-tag round trips into the both-modes list, and drop the boundary check that readTag's full-name read already guarantees.

Invalidate streamed prefixes containing provisional HTML closures
With { streaming: true }, parsing text <x-card>\n\nbody and then appending \n\n</x-card> no longer produces the same tree as a full parse. This closure makes the first paragraph reusable, so extractReusableNodes() caches the empty x-card and reparses only the tail; the arriving closing tag is discarded and body remains outside the element. Previously, the unresolved HTML frame prevented that prefix from being reused. Keep provisional openers out of the reusable prefix and add a regression using actual streaming-mode calls.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Avoid scanning every HTML ancestor for each paragraph opener
For deeply nested input such as '<div>'.repeat(N) + '<p></p>'.repeat(N), every <p> scans all N open div frames because none is a paragraph or scope boundary. This introduces quadratic work into a previously linear token walk. Isolated tokenListToTree checks here took approximately 3.9 seconds at N=16,000 versus 0.11 seconds before the change, allowing relatively small untrusted documents to stall the parsing thread. Track the nearest in-scope paragraph or boundary rather than rescanning the stack, consistent with the repository's linear-time requirement.

Compare raw-text tag names case-insensitively
Mixed-case raw tags are recognized case-insensitively by the parser while retaining their authored names. For <sCript>const s = '&'</sCript>, this exact lowercase comparison makes rawBody false, so both HTML rendering and Markdown saving rewrite the script text to contain &amp;. Script and style bodies do not decode character references, so this changes their contents rather than preserving them. Normalize the name for classification without changing the emitted tag.

Require an attribute boundary after a braced value
For valid unquoted HTML values such as <a href={base}/page>go</a>, the braced alternative matches only {base}; matchAll() then turns page into a separate boolean attribute. HTML_TAG_RE still accepts the complete {base}/page as an ordinary unquoted value, and the previous attribute reader retained it, so this change silently truncates links and other attribute values. Require the braced match to end at an attribute boundary or fall back to consuming the full unquoted value.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Remove exponential backtracking from braced attributes
Malformed tags with repeated braced values cause exponential backtracking because each value can match both braced_value and unquoted inside the repeated attribute group. On Node 24, HTML_TAG_RE.test('<a ' + 'x={y} '.repeat(24) + '!>') took approximately four seconds for just 149 bytes; autoCloseMarkdown() leaves this input unchanged. Since htmlInline() executes this regex synchronously on ordinary Markdown, a small untrusted document can block the parsing thread. Make the alternatives unambiguous or scan braced values deterministically.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Normalize tag names in the closer index
For text <Hello>\n\nbody\n\n</hello>, parseHtmlInline() preserves the authored Hello, but this lookup and the index insertion use case-sensitive keys. The lookup therefore reports no closer, so the new paragraph-end logic closes Hello early and leaves body outside it, even though the actual closing-tag handler matches names case-insensitively and paired this input before the change. Normalize both index keys and lookup names without changing the emitted tag's authored case.
