Character references are decoded in text, with or without markdown: `&amp;`, `&lt;`, `&#65;`. As in markdown, a reference needs its `;` (`&copy` stays), and an unknown name stays. ## Tags

One grammar reads a tag in the inline rule and in the raw-block splitter (`src/internal/parse/html-tag.ts`). It is CommonMark's, plus:

- An attribute value may be a balanced `{…}` expression, up to four levels deep: `<div style={{a: 1}}>` has `style="{{a: 1}}"`. The text is kept as written. Only braces are counted, not JavaScript: a brace inside a string (`{{a: "}"}}`) is not skipped, so the tag is not recognized.
- A comment may end in `--->`, as in HTML: `<!--- a --->` is a comment with the text `- a -`.

When an attribute repeats, the first value wins, as in HTML.

A comment in a block of its own is a comment node, not a paragraph holding one, whatever its indentation.

A few end tags are implied, as in HTML: a stray `</br>` is a `<br>`, and a `<p>` closes an open `<p>` (not across a `table`, `td`, `th`, `caption`, `button`, `template`, `object`, `marquee`, or `applet`). Nothing else is closed implicitly; for example a `<div>` does not close a `<p>`.

## Inline content in a block

Inside an element that collects blocks, a paragraph's inline content stays in one `p`. Markdown inline nodes (images, line breaks, components, math) always belong to it. An HTML tag does when it is one of `strong`, `em`, `del`, `code`, `a`, `span`, `sub`, `sup`, `kbd`, `img`, `br`, or a custom element (a name with a `-`) that closed in its paragraph. An author-written element that is alone in its paragraph is not wrapped, except for the first group.

## How a block becomes a tree

1. markdown-exit tokenizes with `html: true`.
2. When `markdown` is true, the built-in `html_block` rule is narrowed to `<style>`, `<pre>`, `<script>`, and `<textarea>`. Every other closed HTML region falls through to the normal block/inline rules, so `**`, `` ` ``, and nested tags tokenize as markdown. This override is the feature. It reads markdown-exit's private block ruler (`__rules__`); a markdown-exit upgrade that renames or stops consulting `html_block` silently disables markdown-in-HTML.
3. Regions that remain `html_block` (those four tags, and every closed HTML block when `markdown` is false) are split into `html_inline` + literal `text` and wrapped in a paragraph so the same walk pairs them. The four raw-tag bodies are not split.
3. Regions that remain `html_block` (those four tags, and every closed HTML block when `markdown` is false) are split into `html_inline` + literal `text` and wrapped in a paragraph so the same walk pairs them. `<pre>` bodies are split into HTML tags and text; the other three bodies stay text.
4. The tree walk keeps an HTML stack across blocks, the way hast-util-raw feeds parse5. An open tag pushes a frame. Later paragraphs and blocks fill it. A matching close pops it and auto-closes mismatched frames in between. `</div><div>` emits the closed `div` as a sibling of the new open frame, not as its child.

Two scanners must agree on what a tag is: the splitter for raw `html_block` text (`htmlToTokens` in `src/plugins/html.ts`) and the inline opener/closer parser (`parseHtmlInline` in `src/internal/parse/utils.ts`). A tag one accepts and the other rejects becomes a text leaf or an unclosed frame.

P1 Badge Remove exponential backtracking from braced attributes

Malformed tags with repeated braced values cause exponential backtracking because each value can match both braced_value and unquoted inside the repeated attribute group. On Node 24, HTML_TAG_RE.test('<a ' + 'x={y} '.repeat(24) + '!>') took approximately four seconds for just 149 bytes; autoCloseMarkdown() leaves this input unchanged. Since htmlInline() executes this regex synchronously on ordinary Markdown, a small untrusted document can block the parsing thread. Make the alternatives unambiguous or scan braced values deterministically.

P1 Badge Avoid scanning every HTML ancestor for each paragraph opener

For deeply nested input such as '<div>'.repeat(N) + '<p></p>'.repeat(N), every <p> scans all N open div frames because none is a paragraph or scope boundary. This introduces quadratic work into a previously linear token walk. Isolated tokenListToTree checks here took approximately 3.9 seconds at N=16,000 versus 0.11 seconds before the change, allowing relatively small untrusted documents to stall the parsing thread. Track the nearest in-scope paragraph or boundary rather than rescanning the stack, consistent with the repository's linear-time requirement.

P2 Badge Normalize tag names in the closer index

For text <Hello>\n\nbody\n\n</hello>, parseHtmlInline() preserves the authored Hello, but this lookup and the index insertion use case-sensitive keys. The lookup therefore reports no closer, so the new paragraph-end logic closes Hello early and leaves body outside it, even though the actual closing-tag handler matches names case-insensitively and paired this input before the change. Normalize both index keys and lookup names without changing the emitted tag's authored case.

P1 Badge Invalidate streamed prefixes containing provisional HTML closures

With { streaming: true }, parsing text <x-card>\n\nbody and then appending \n\n</x-card> no longer produces the same tree as a full parse. This closure makes the first paragraph reusable, so extractReusableNodes() caches the empty x-card and reparses only the tail; the arriving closing tag is discarded and body remains outside the element. Previously, the unresolved HTML frame prevented that prefix from being reused. Keep provisional openers out of the reusable prefix and add a regression using actual streaming-mode calls.

Close the after-text frame when an older frame closes in the same paragraph.

When the paragraph starts with one open HTML frame, &lt;/div&gt; pops that frame and leaves the returned node in the paragraph children. A later &lt;b&gt; then opens at stack index 0, while depthBefore is still 1. The state.htmlStack[depthBefore] lookup misses it, so the new frame remains open and captures the next paragraph. Track frames opened during the current paragraph instead of relying only on the pre-paragraph stack depth. Preserve the existing sibling emission for the frame that closed first.

Update the paragraph handling around processChildren to track HTML frames opened
during the current paragraph, including when an earlier frame closes and reduces
the stack below depthBefore. Apply the after-text closing logic to the newly
opened frame so it does not capture the next paragraph, while preserving sibling
emission for the frame that closed first.

P2 Badge Require an attribute boundary after a braced value

For valid unquoted HTML values such as <a href={base}/page>go</a>, the braced alternative matches only {base}; matchAll() then turns page into a separate boolean attribute. HTML_TAG_RE still accepts the complete {base}/page as an ordinary unquoted value, and the previous attribute reader retained it, so this change silently truncates links and other attribute values. Require the braced match to end at an attribute boundary or fall back to consuming the full unquoted value.
