When a product publishes a release, the version-follow pull request now releases the CLI too:

Release 8.0.0-rc.31: follow the products' released versions: @prisma/orm-toolchain 8.0.0-rc.22 -> 8.0.0-rc.23

update-product-versions.yml moves the pins as before, then runs pnpm bump-version. When the pull request passes its checks and merges, the root version changes, so publish.yml publishes the release under latest. No person needs to cut it.

Why

prisma@8.0.0-rc.29 pinned @prisma/orm-toolchain 8.0.0-rc.21 for four days after ORM rc.22 shipped. A project on ORM rc.22 installed two toolchains, and the CLI ran the old one (reported on Discord).

The same thing happened with rc.21 in October. A CLI behind a product release breaks every project on that release, so the release should not wait for someone to remember it.

What changes

  1. The follow pull request bumps the version. It runs pnpm bump-version and stages every file it changes: the workspace manifests, the lockfile and the version stamp in skills/prisma-platform-core-concepts/SKILL.md. The title starts with Release <version>:.
  2. Open release pull requests are closed as superseded. A Bump to version pull request would race the same version number. Older follow pull requests are closed as before.
  3. Pins on main that no release shipped are released. Suppose a maintainer's release merges first and takes the version number. Then the follow pull request's squash changes no version and ships only a dev build, and the registry comparison finds nothing left to move. So on the release channel, update-product-versions.mjs now compares main's pins with the manifests at the last release's tag, v<version>. The next run, or the daily run at the latest, opens a release for those pins. The checkout fetches tags for this.
  4. bump-version passes --no-frozen-lockfile, because pnpm defaults to a frozen lockfile in CI.

A release for a change in this repository alone is still cut by a maintainer. docs/oss/release-automation.md, docs/oss/versioning.md and the README now say this. They also say the merge still needs the one approving review the main ruleset requires, which CodeRabbit gives today.

How it was checked

  • pnpm bump-version with CI=true moved rc.30 to rc.31 and changed exactly those files. git add -u stages exactly them.
  • New tests for pinChanges, and pnpm test:scripts passes (89 tests). actionlint and pnpm lint pass.
  • Against the real registry: on main today, the release channel reports no change. With the root version set back to rc.29, it reports the three pins rc.30 shipped.

Alternatives considered

  • Keep releases manual, and open the release pull request automatically for a person to approve. This removes the step of remembering, but Bump to version 8.0.0-rc.30 #380 shows an approval can wait for days.
  • Only alert when prisma@latest falls behind. The nightly getting-started check in prisma/getting-started-eval now does this, as a second line of defence. Alone, it reports the problem without fixing it.

Related: prisma/orm#30944 makes the ORM's publish workflow notify this repository at once. It read a secret that was never set, so the follow pull request waited for the daily run. Refs TML-3439.

…lso bumps the CLI version

prisma@8.0.0-rc.29 pinned @prisma/orm-toolchain 8.0.0-rc.21 for four days after ORM rc.22 shipped. The follow pull request (#381) merged, but it only shipped a dev build, and the release pull request (#380) waited for review. Now the follow pull request runs pnpm bump-version too, so merging it publishes the release. bump-version passes --no-frozen-lockfile, because CI defaults pnpm to a frozen lockfile.

If a maintainer's release takes the version number before a follow pull request merges, the follow pull request's squash changes no version and ships only a dev build. The registry comparison then finds nothing to move, so the pins stayed unreleased. The release channel now also compares main's pins with the last release's tag, so the next run releases them. Docs name the CodeRabbit approval the merge needs and drop the text that says a release needs a person.

publish.yml tags a release only after it publishes, so a run in that gap, or after a failed publish, warns and falls back to the registry comparison instead of failing.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Product releases can now trigger a CLI release automatically, with updated product versions and publication to the latest channel. Routine updates to the main branch continue to publish dev builds.
    • Automated release pull requests now close competing version-update pull requests and can be merged once required checks and review are complete.
  • Documentation

    • Updated release and versioning guides with the automated workflow, approval requirements, and troubleshooting steps.

Walkthrough

The update script compares current product pins with the manifests from the current version tag when available, and uses registry updates as a fallback. The workflow now bumps the CLI version and opens a versioned release pull request when changes are detected. It closes competing version-update pull requests before opening the new one. The lockfile-only install command disables frozen-lockfile mode. The README and release documentation describe the updated release and versioning flow.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 96285

The release changes are mergeable with a small documentation correction: unattended releases depend on automated approval, and maintainers may need to approve manually when it does not arrive.

Explanation

The title names the main change: a product release now also releases the CLI, so prisma@latest does not pin an older ORM toolchain. The raw summary and objectives confirm the version-follow workflow now runs bump-version and publishes under latest. The title is concise and specific, though it uses a ticket prefix and a fairly long form.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the workflow change: the version-follow PR runs pnpm bump-version and publishes under latest. It also covers the motivating incident, the superseded release PR closure, the tag-based pin comparison, the --no-frozen-lockfile flag, docs updates, and the test results. This is clearly related to the changeset.

4. The pull request runs the full quality and conformance checks. When they pass and CodeRabbit approves it (the `main` ruleset requires one approving review), it merges, and that push to `main` changes the root version, so [`publish.yml`](../../.github/workflows/publish.yml) publishes the release under `latest` with the committed product versions, plus the usual `dev` build.

A product release reaches a released CLI with no person in the loop, because a CLI left on an older product version breaks every project on the newer one: `prisma@8.0.0-rc.29` pinned `@prisma/orm-toolchain` 8.0.0-rc.21 for four days after the ORM's rc.22 shipped, while its release pull request waited for a review. A release for a change in this repository alone is still cut by a maintainer (see [versioning.md](versioning.md)). Everything on `main` ships with either kind of release, so `main` must always be releasable. Any commit that changes a product pin on `main`, by hand or not, is released by the next run.

Qualify the "no person in the loop" guarantee so it matches the approval step.

Step 4 merges the release pull request only after CodeRabbit approves it. The troubleshooting table says a maintainer approves the pull request by hand when that approval does not arrive. The sentence on line 22 says a product release reaches a released CLI with no person in the loop. Limit that sentence to the normal path and state the manual fallback.
