🟡 Changes recommended
Reentrant READY callbacks can shut down an active provider, and copied hash defaults still expose mutable caller-owned values.

What changed in this PR
Addresses spec v0.9.0 compliance gaps in the Ruby SDK’s provider lifecycle, error handling, tracking, and immutable hook inputs.
Changes:
- Marks providers without
initREADY at registration and moves READY callbacks before replacement shutdown. - Handles
NotImplementedErrorconsistently and makestrackreturnnil. - Introduces shared deep-copy logic for hook inputs and flag metadata, with regression tests and updated signatures.

- A provider without init is READY from registration, and its READY handlers run before the old provider's shutdown, so a handler added during that shutdown runs once (2.8.5.1). - NotImplementedError from error and finally hooks, event handlers, provider init and shutdown is handled like other errors, as the client already does (1.6.1, 1.6.2, 4.3.8, 4.4.3, 4.4.4, 5.2.5). One RECOVERABLE_ERRORS list defines what the SDK recovers from. - track returns nothing (6.1.1.1). - After the before stage, hooks read a deep-frozen copy of the evaluation context, made on first read, so they can't change the caller's nested values (4.1.4.1). - Flag metadata values are frozen too (1.4.15.1). - FrozenCopy is shared by hook inputs and flag metadata. It copies only the spec's value types (strings, times, hashes, arrays); other objects such as user records are passed through, as before. From review of the audit fixes: - A Time in a hook input is copied but left unfrozen, so a hook calling utc or localtime no longer turns the evaluation into its default. - A Hash's default proc isn't copied, so reading a missing key of a frozen copy doesn't raise. - The old provider is shut down only if it's still unbound after the new provider's READY handlers, so a handler that rolls back to it doesn't leave a shut-down provider bound. - Context fields share one copy map, so a structure two fields share is copied once. - FrozenCopy works where Ractor isn't defined. - Threaded specs wait with timeouts instead of blocking. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Jose Colella <jose.colella@gusto.com>
Clearing the default proc also cleared a plain default, so a copied Hash.new(value) lost its default. Now only a default proc is dropped, and a plain default is copied and frozen like the values. Part of #300 (spec v0.9.0). A compliance audit of
main(9e166fe) went through every requirement in sections 1–6 and Appendix A. This PR fixes the MUSTs it found behaving wrongly. Untested requirements whose behavior is already correct get tests in a separate test-only PR.Fixes
initis READY from registration (2.8.5.1). Its READY handlers now run before the old provider shuts down. Before, the provider stayed NOT_READY untilset_providerreturned, so every evaluation returned the default withPROVIDER_NOT_READYwhile the old provider was still shutting down.NotImplementedErroris handled like any other error (4.3.8, 4.4.3, 4.4.4, 5.2.5, 1.6.1, 1.6.2). The client already treated it that way, since it's Ruby's abstract-method idiom. When raised by an error or finally hook, an event handler, or a provider'sinitorshutdown, it used to stop the remaining hooks, handlers or shutdowns. In one case it also ran an error hook twice.Interruptand other non-StandardErrorexceptions are still not rescued.trackreturns nothing (6.1.1.1). It used to return whatever the provider'strackreturned.details.flag_metadata["k"] << "x"changed the provider's string.Worth a look
OpenFeature::SDK::FrozenCopy.ofreplacesHooks.frozen_copy, and hook inputs and flag metadata now share it.ProviderMetadatais a Struct, soHookContextcopies its members itself.utcorlocaltimekeeps working and still can't touch the caller's object.Cost: one API hook, Ruby 4.0, against main.
Evaluations without hooks are unchanged.
Rollbacks: the old provider is shut down only if it's still unbound once the new provider's READY handlers have run. So a handler that rolls back to the old provider doesn't leave a shut-down provider bound.
Known limits, left alone:
ProviderMetadatais passed through. All contrib providers use those shapes.Remaining race: a READY handler registered between the status update and the dispatch snapshot can still run twice. Providers with
inithave the same race on main. Not changed, by earlier decisions
ArgumentError(1.4.10). It's Ruby's equivalent of a compile-time type error.provider_metadatastill returns nil aftershutdown(1.1.5), since no provider is configured then.set_provider_and_waitreturns READY from inside a handler (1.1.2.4). Each event's status is still recorded before its own handlers run.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
