fix: release init waiters on replacement and same-thread re-entry - #348
Conversation
- Replacing a provider whose init is still running marks that attempt failed and wakes anyone waiting on it, the same as shutdown does. - set_provider_and_wait called from inside the provider's own init (e.g. a handler of an event it emits) raises instead of waiting on itself forever. What changed in this PR
Fixes two initialization hangs in the Ruby SDK’s provider lifecycle tracking introduced by #345.
Changes:
- Releases waiters with an initialization error when an unfinished provider is replaced or the API resets.
- Rejects same-thread initialization re-entry instead of waiting indefinitely.
- Adds regression tests and updates type signatures for the new helpers.

If another thread replaces or shuts down the provider while set_provider_and_wait is running its init, the call now raises ProviderInitializationError, matching what waiters on the same attempt get. The abandoned attempt also no longer dispatches READY. Signed-off-by: Jose Colella <jose.colella@gusto.com> Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Summary
initis still running used to leave anyone inset_provider_and_waiton it blocked, even aftershutdown. They now getProviderInitializationError.set_provider_and_waitcalled from inside the provider's owninit(for example, from a handler of an event it emits there) used to wait on itself forever. It now raisesProviderInitializationErrorinstead of deadlocking, and never reports the unfinished init as successful.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
