fix(auth): make token refresh and session restore work - #210
Token refresh has not worked end to end in the Flask and FastAPI integrations. Found while testing #206 against the Python starter kit: once the access token expired, or the app restarted, users were silently signed out. Four bugs, all already on main:
Sessions are lost on every restart, and across workers._initialize_framework put device_id inside the config dict passed to StorageManager.initialize(), which ignores it, so a random per-process device id was generated. Session data is stored under device:<device_id>:<user_id>, so after a restart (or on a different worker) the SDK looked under a new key and treated the user as signed out. It is now passed as the device_id argument, as _initialize_null_framework already does, giving a stable device:flask: / device:fastapi: namespace.
A successful refresh blocks forever.TokenManager.get_access_token() holds self.lock while refresh_access_token() calls set_tokens(), which takes the same non-reentrant lock again. The lock is now an RLock.
Refreshed tokens are never saved, and never picked up by other workers. They only updated the in-memory TokenManager, so a restarted process restored the old, already-used refresh token. UserSession now saves the session after each refresh (via a new TokenManager.on_tokens_refreshed hook, called from refresh_access_token() so direct callers of that public method persist the rotated refresh token too). Kinde rotates refresh tokens on each use, and each worker caches the session in memory, so before refreshing an expired access token the TokenManager now reads the saved tokens (via load_persisted_tokens): if another worker has already refreshed, it uses those tokens; otherwise it refreshes with the newest saved refresh token. If saving after a refresh fails, the refreshed tokens are kept, get_access_token() raises the new KindeTokenPersistenceException (a KindeTokenException carrying the still-valid access_token), and the save is retried on the next call without refreshing again. is_authenticated() treats that exception as authenticated, so a storage failure doesn't sign out a user whose tokens are valid.
Refresh failures are silent.is_authenticated() swallowed every exception. A failed refresh now logs the HTTP status and OAuth error code (Token refresh failed: HTTP 400 (invalid_grant)), and is_authenticated() logs why it returned False. No token values are logged.
Also fixes the same double-lock in StorageManager.reset(), which calls initialize() while holding the class lock and blocked forever (the new tests use it). get_device_id() had the same latent pattern.
Tests
New testv2/testv2_auth/test_token_refresh.py (10 tests): refresh doesn't block, refreshed tokens are persisted and restored after a simulated restart, a direct refresh_access_token() call persists the rotated tokens, each refresh saves exactly once, a worker uses tokens another worker already refreshed, a worker refreshes with the newest saved refresh token, a failed save keeps the tokens, raises, and is retried without refreshing again, the user stays authenticated when the save fails, a rejected refresh is logged without token values, and a framework session is found after a simulated process restart. The storage fake copies values on write and read, like a serialising session store, so the persistence test fails if the save hook is disabled; the two worker tests fail if reading the saved tokens is disabled.
Kinde only issues a refresh token when the offline scope is requested, which neither the SDK default nor the starter kit does, so the test app must request it.
Set the app's access token expiry to 60 seconds in Kinde, and request openid profile email offline at login.
Sign in, note the access token on /details.
Restart the app. Before this change: signed out immediately. After: still signed in.
Wait over 60 seconds and reload /details. Before: signed out (or the request hangs if Kinde accepts the refresh). After: still signed in, with a new access token.
Behaviour changes for integrators
The session storage key changes from device:<random-uuid>:<user_id> to device:<framework>:<user_id>. Sessions created before upgrading aren't found, but those were already lost on every restart, including the deploy's own.
get_access_token() and refresh_access_token() can raise KindeTokenPersistenceException when refreshed tokens can't be saved; callers that catch it can use its access_token.
New log lines under kinde_sdk.auth.token_manager (WARNING, on refresh or save failure) and kinde_sdk.auth.user_session (INFO/WARNING, when is_authenticated() returns False for an existing session).
Not in this PR
Refreshes aren't coordinated across processes. Two workers refreshing the same session at the same moment both use the same refresh token; this relies on Kinde's short overlap period after rotation, during which both the previous and new refresh token are valid. Preventing it entirely needs a shared lock (e.g. Redis), which the SDK doesn't have.
The SDK's default scope doesn't include offline, and the framework /login routes don't accept a scope, so the refresh path is only reached by apps that request offline themselves.
StorageManager.initialize() still writes _device_id into storage at startup, outside a request, which logs No request found in context for framework storage.
- Pass the framework's device_id to StorageManager.initialize() as an
argument. It was placed inside config, where it's ignored, so a random
per-process id was used and sessions weren't found after a restart or
on another worker.
- Use a reentrant lock in TokenManager. get_access_token() holds the lock
while a refresh calls set_tokens(), so every successful refresh blocked
forever.
- Save the session to storage after a refresh, so a restarted process
doesn't restore the old, already-used refresh token.
- Log why a refresh failed (HTTP status and OAuth error code, no token
values) and why is_authenticated() returned False.
- Use a reentrant lock in StorageManager: reset() calls initialize() while
holding it and blocked forever.

Token refresh now loads and saves persisted tokens, retries failed saves, and logs refresh failures. UserSession binds token managers to session storage and handles persistence errors during authentication checks. OAuth initialization passes the framework name as the device ID, and storage uses reentrant locks.

OAuth token refresh and session persistence
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Token refresh and persisted-token handling kinde_sdk/core/exceptions.py, kinde_sdk/auth/token_manager.py, testv2/testv2_auth/test_token_refresh.py
TokenManager checks for newer persisted tokens, saves refreshed tokens, and retries failed saves. Refresh failures are logged without token values. Tests cover refresh, persistence, concurrent token use, and failure handling.
Session storage binding and authentication handling kinde_sdk/auth/user_session.py, testv2/testv2_auth/test_token_refresh.py
UserSession binds token managers to session storage. Authentication checks return true for token-persistence exceptions and log and return false for other exceptions.
Framework initialization and storage locking kinde_sdk/auth/oauth.py, kinde_sdk/core/storage/storage_manager.py, testv2/testv2_auth/test_token_refresh.py
OAuth initialization passes the framework name as the device ID. StorageManager uses a reentrant lock. A restart test checks device ID retrieval and token-manager discovery.
Default Flask and FastAPI storage still loses sessions on restart and cannot share refreshed tokens between workers. Address that gap and ensure valid tokens remain usable during save failures before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to fb6e5
The changes improve refresh and restart recovery, but shared-worker session cleanup is not coordinated with refresh persistence. Depending on the storage configuration, another worker can recreate a logged-out session record, and logging out one user can delete other persisted sessions in the shared namespace.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: A worker retaining an in-memory session can recreate its persisted record after another worker logs out. The new refresh callback writes without checking a logout generation or tombstone, and restoration accepts the recreated record. This newly extends surviving worker state into durable recovery; continued authenticated access depends on token validity and framework identity handling.
Medium · reliability · inferred: For a backend shared across workers that supports prefix cleanup, one user's logout deletes every persisted record under the stable framework namespace. Prefix-wide cleanup predates this PR, but replacing process-specific namespaces with a common framework name expands its failure-containment scope across workers. Backend-level request or session isolation may limit that exposure.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — In a shared backend, the maximum demonstrated cleanup scope is every record matching the current device:framework-name: prefix, not just the logging-out user. No privileged operation beyond that user's logout is required. Whether this spans multiple browsers or applications depends on isolation supplied by the external adapter.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A previously authenticated request on a surviving worker can complete refresh and save after logout clears shared storage, recreating a restorable credential record. Same-instance deletion blocks a later save from that instance, and effective provider revocation may prevent usable credentials. Thus durable resurrection is supported conditionally, but an end-to-end post-logout access bypass is not verified.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Persisted credentials become authoritative during expired-token retrieval through a user-ID-derived key and an expiry comparison. The loader does not compare client or issuer context with persisted user_info. User-ID-only TokenManager singleton ownership predates this PR; without evidence of shared application contexts or attacker-controlled storage, that existing limitation is not treated as a newly introduced cross-tenant vulnerability.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Rejected refresh requests do not invoke the save callback. Successful refresh updates memory before persistence, and save exceptions are logged and ignored. This improves the previous absence of refresh persistence but remains best-effort across interruption or backend failure. Per-manager locking does not coordinate independent workers' writes or logout decisions.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define shared session-generation and conditional-write semantics so logout invalidates outstanding refresh writers and stale writes cannot recreate a deleted session. Separate user-session deletion from whole-device cleanup, and make the application, issuer, and browser isolation expected from each storage adapter explicit.

… a copying store
Review follow-up for #210.
- Before refreshing an expired access token, read the session's saved
tokens. If another worker has already refreshed and saved newer tokens,
use them; otherwise refresh with the newest saved refresh token. Kinde
rotates refresh tokens on each use, so a worker refreshing with its own
cached copy would be rejected.
- Tests use a storage fake that copies values on write and read, like a
serialising session store, so the persistence test fails when the save
hook is disabled. Add tests for using another worker's refreshed tokens
and for refreshing with the latest saved refresh token.

Persist tokens when refresh_access_token() is called directly.
This callback runs only through get_access_token(). A caller that invokes the public refresh_access_token() method receives rotated tokens, but the saved session retains the old refresh token. A restart can therefore restore an unusable session. Move the persistence callback into the successful refresh path and avoid invoking it twice through get_access_token().

Review follow-up for #210.
- If saving the session after a refresh fails, keep the refreshed tokens,
raise KindeTokenPersistenceException (a KindeTokenException carrying the
still-valid access_token), and retry the save on the next call to
get_access_token() without refreshing again.
- is_authenticated() treats KindeTokenPersistenceException as
authenticated, so a storage failure doesn't sign out a user whose
tokens are valid.
- get_access_token() still returns the value from refresh_access_token().

Review follow-up for #210.
Move the save after a successful refresh from get_access_token() into
refresh_access_token(), so callers of the public refresh method also
persist the rotated refresh token. Each refresh saves exactly once; a
failed save is still retried on the next get_access_token() call.
@coderabbitai Fixed the outside-diff finding on token_manager.py:146 in fb1f1e6: saving the refreshed tokens now happens in refresh_access_token(), right after set_tokens(), so direct callers of that public method persist the rotated refresh token too. It's removed from get_access_token(), so each refresh saves exactly once, and a failed save is still retried on the next get_access_token() call. Added tests for a direct refresh_access_token() call and for one save per refresh.

@KomanRudden Thanks for the fix. Code inspection confirms that refresh_access_token() now saves the rotated tokens after set_tokens(). get_access_token() no longer duplicates that save and retains the failed-save retry path.
The regression tests cover direct refresh calls and one save per refresh. I did not run the tests. This addresses the outside-diff finding.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Do not treat a no-op session write as a successful save.
If a bound token manager refreshes outside a framework request, the storage backend cannot obtain a session. Its set() method returns without writing or raising. The callback therefore appears successful, and _save_refreshed_tokens() clears _save_pending; a later request cannot retry persistence of the rotated token. Make the storage callback report whether it wrote the session, or reject refresh persistence when no writable session exists. This applies to both the framework-aware storage path and FastAPI storage. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Check the stored refresh token inside the refresh mock.
The test reads storage only after requests.post raises requests.ConnectionError. A change that saves the pending tokens after a failed refresh would also store new_refresh_token before line 189 runs. Rebind the refresh callback when an existing session is updated.
When set_user_data() updates an existing session, the shared TokenManager keeps the refresh callback bound by another UserSession. A later refresh then saves that session's older user_info to storage, and a restored session reads those stale values. Rebind the callback in this branch so the latest update is saved.

Default Flask and FastAPI storage is process-local, so cross-worker and restart session restore does not take effect.
StorageFactory.create_storage({"type": self.framework}) returns MemoryStorage unless a factory is registered for that framework type. No code under kinde_sdk/ registers one. MemoryStorage is a per-process dict, so the storage passed to StorageManager.initialize keeps user session and token data only in the current worker. A restart discards that data.
This affects the new logic in these ways:
_adopt_newer_persisted_tokens() in kinde_sdk/auth/token_manager.py reads only this process's writes. It cannot receive tokens another worker refreshed, even though its comment says it can.
The device_id argument at kinde_sdk/auth/oauth.py:126-128 does not preserve sessions across restart or workers with this backend. The comment at lines 123-125 does not hold for the default configuration.
A refresh in one worker rotates the refresh token. Other workers keep the old one, so their refresh request fails and is_authenticated() returns False. This failure predates the PR, but the PR's stated fix does not apply to default configurations.
The new tests patch StorageFactory.create_storage (testv2/testv2_auth/test_token_refresh.py:283), so they do not exercise this default path.
Applications that register a shared framework storage factory through StorageFactory.register_framework_factory are not affected. For the default configuration, the PR must either provide a shared persistent backend or narrow its comments and claims to the registered-factory case.

Handle the persistence exception where a valid token is needed.
While a token save is pending, get_access_token() raises KindeTokenPersistenceException even when the access token is still valid (token_manager.py:162-163). The exception carries the valid token in exc.access_token. Only UserSession.is_authenticated() handles it. Other callers do not:
OAuth.get_tokens() (oauth.py:672-674) converts the exception to ValueError, so the caller does not receive the valid token.
helpers.is_authenticated() (core/helpers.py:170) catches Exception and returns False for a session that is still authenticated.
Helpers such as get_user_organizations() (core/helpers.py:208-213) and get_user_details_sync() (core/helpers.py:729) handle only other exception types, so this exception propagates.
While the save keeps failing, each call retries the save and raises again. A storage outage can therefore break calls that hold valid tokens.
Apply the same handling at each call site that needs the token. In get_tokens(), use the saved token:
🐛 Suggested fix for get_tokens()
if "access_token" in token_manager.tokens:
- access_token = token_manager.get_access_token()+ try:+ access_token = token_manager.get_access_token()+ except KindeTokenPersistenceException as e:+ access_token = e.access_token
Add from kinde_sdk.core.exceptions import KindeTokenPersistenceException to kinde_sdk/auth/oauth.py if the module does not already import it.
For is_authenticated(), return True when this exception is raised, as UserSession.is_authenticated() does.

What
Token refresh has not worked end to end in the Flask and FastAPI integrations. Found while testing #206 against the Python starter kit: once the access token expired, or the app restarted, users were silently signed out. Four bugs, all already on
main:_initialize_frameworkputdevice_idinside theconfigdict passed toStorageManager.initialize(), which ignores it, so a random per-process device id was generated. Session data is stored underdevice:<device_id>:<user_id>, so after a restart (or on a different worker) the SDK looked under a new key and treated the user as signed out. It is now passed as thedevice_idargument, as_initialize_null_frameworkalready does, giving a stabledevice:flask:/device:fastapi:namespace.TokenManager.get_access_token()holdsself.lockwhilerefresh_access_token()callsset_tokens(), which takes the same non-reentrant lock again. The lock is now anRLock.TokenManager, so a restarted process restored the old, already-used refresh token.UserSessionnow saves the session after each refresh (via a newTokenManager.on_tokens_refreshedhook, called fromrefresh_access_token()so direct callers of that public method persist the rotated refresh token too). Kinde rotates refresh tokens on each use, and each worker caches the session in memory, so before refreshing an expired access token theTokenManagernow reads the saved tokens (viaload_persisted_tokens): if another worker has already refreshed, it uses those tokens; otherwise it refreshes with the newest saved refresh token. If saving after a refresh fails, the refreshed tokens are kept,get_access_token()raises the newKindeTokenPersistenceException(aKindeTokenExceptioncarrying the still-validaccess_token), and the save is retried on the next call without refreshing again.is_authenticated()treats that exception as authenticated, so a storage failure doesn't sign out a user whose tokens are valid.is_authenticated()swallowed every exception. A failed refresh now logs the HTTP status and OAuth error code (Token refresh failed: HTTP 400 (invalid_grant)), andis_authenticated()logs why it returnedFalse. No token values are logged. Also fixes the same double-lock in
StorageManager.reset(), which callsinitialize()while holding the class lock and blocked forever (the new tests use it).get_device_id()had the same latent pattern.Tests
New
testv2/testv2_auth/test_token_refresh.py(10 tests): refresh doesn't block, refreshed tokens are persisted and restored after a simulated restart, a directrefresh_access_token()call persists the rotated tokens, each refresh saves exactly once, a worker uses tokens another worker already refreshed, a worker refreshes with the newest saved refresh token, a failed save keeps the tokens, raises, and is retried without refreshing again, the user stays authenticated when the save fails, a rejected refresh is logged without token values, and a framework session is found after a simulated process restart. The storage fake copies values on write and read, like a serialising session store, so the persistence test fails if the save hook is disabled; the two worker tests fail if reading the saved tokens is disabled.pytest testv2: 454 passed, 3 skipped (main: 444 passed, 3 skipped). No existing tests changed.handle_redirect.Manual test (Python starter kit)
Kinde only issues a refresh token when the
offlinescope is requested, which neither the SDK default nor the starter kit does, so the test app must request it.openid profile email offlineat login./details./details.
The SDK's default scope doesn't include
