fix: stop leaking secrets through logs and session storage - #206
This PR now also contains #209 (OAuth callback state and nonce checks). #209 was approved by @shafaladhikari and @Koosha-Owji and merged into this branch, so its changes reach main with this PR. Please merge with a merge commit, not a squash.
Summary
This started as "stop leaking secrets", and grew while testing against the starter kit. It now covers three things:
1. No more secrets in logs or session storage
The SDK no longer logs the token request or response, the OAuth state, the user profile, session contents or stored values.
client_secret is no longer written into the user's session (which can be a browser cookie). It's kept in memory instead. Old sessions that still contain it get cleaned up when they're loaded or saved.
A failed token exchange or Account API call now only reports the HTTP status and error code, not the response body.
The SDK no longer forces its own loggers to INFO. That's up to the app.
state is always required and must match the login started in the same session.
The ID token nonce is always checked. A missing nonce or missing ID token is rejected.
state and nonce can only be used once.
FastAPI now returns 400 (not 500) for a rejected callback, and rejects a callback without a code.
3. Bug fixes found while testing
Users were signed out after an app restart, or when a request landed on another worker. The session's device ID is now stored in the session itself.
A successful token refresh hung forever (lock taken twice). Fixed, and refreshed tokens are now saved back to the session.
Account API lookups (force_api=True) went to a placeholder host and came back empty. They now use the token's issuer, or KINDE_HOST as a fallback, and only over HTTPS.
Account API permissions and feature flags were never matched or parsed correctly. Fixed.
Management API feature flags failed for boolean and integer values. Fixed, and the generator re-applies the fix until the API spec is corrected.
The logout URL now includes the redirect parameter Kinde expects, with a new KINDE_POST_LOGOUT_REDIRECT_URI setting.
The full list is in the CHANGELOG.
Behaviour changes
Logins must be started through the SDK in the same session, and opened on the same host as KINDE_REDIRECT_URI.
Logins with custom scopes that leave out openid are rejected.
Users signed in before this release will need to sign in once more.
Account API calls are refused if the only host available is plain HTTP.
- Stop persisting client_secret in each user's session. OAuth now keeps it
in an in-process UserSession.client_secrets map keyed by client_id, so
sessions restored from storage still get the secret for refresh/revoke.
- Remove log lines that emitted the token-exchange payload (incl.
client_secret, code, verifier) and response body, the OAuth state at
WARNING, the whole FastAPI session at WARNING, user details at INFO, and
session values in the framework storage debug logs.
- Drop logging.getLogger("kinde_sdk").setLevel(INFO) calls; a library
should not set its own log level.
- Log normal framework registration at DEBUG instead of WARNING.
- Add a 30s REQUEST_TIMEOUT to all requests calls that had no timeout.

OAuth callback validation, session persistence, API host and response handling, storage behavior, request timeouts, and logging change. Framework callback and logout handling also change. The Management SDK generator corrects generated feature-flag value types.
OAuth requires stored state and nonce, consumes them before code exchange, and validates ID-token claims before storing tokens. Flask and FastAPI routes handle callback errors and logout ordering. Tests and documentation cover callback validation, route responses, and logout redirects.
Keep client secrets out of stored sessions kinde_sdk/auth/user_session.py, kinde_sdk/auth/oauth.py, kinde_sdk/auth/token_manager.py, testv2/testv2_auth/test_session_secrets.py, testv2/testv2_auth/test_user_session.py, testv2/testv2_auth/test_log_redaction.py
UserSession uses in-memory client secrets instead of persisted values. Stored user information omits client secrets, and token refresh triggers session persistence.
Resolve API hosts and normalize API responses kinde_sdk/auth/base_auth.py, kinde_sdk/auth/feature_flags.py, kinde_sdk/auth/permissions.py, kinde_sdk/auth/roles.py, testv2/testv2_auth/test_account_api_host.py, testv2/testv2_auth/test_feature_flags.py, testv2/testv2_auth/test_permissions.py
Authenticated API clients select configured HTTPS hosts. Permission and feature-flag responses are normalized, and Account API errors use sanitized descriptions.
StorageManager uses a reentrant lock and reads or persists device IDs. Session management checks active framework and standalone OAuth state.
Set request timeouts and reduce sensitive logging kinde_sdk/core/helpers.py, kinde_sdk/auth/oauth.py, kinde_sdk/auth/token_manager.py, kinde_sdk/core/storage/framework_aware_storage.py, kinde_flask/storage/flask_storage_factory.py, kinde_sdk/core/framework/framework_factory.py, kinde_sdk/auth/portals.py, kinde_fastapi/examples/management_token_example.py, testv2/testv2_core/test_helpers.py, testv2/testv2_auth/test_smart_oauth_integration.py
HTTP requests use a shared 30-second timeout. Storage and management-token example logs omit sensitive values. Framework success events use debug-level logging, and authentication constructors no longer set the SDK logger level.
Correct management feature-flag value types generate_management_sdk.py, testv2/testv2_management/test_feature_flag_value_types.py, CHANGELOG.md
The generator applies errata so generated feature-flag models accept strict boolean, integer, or string values. Tests cover model serialization and repeated errata application.

Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🟡 Moderate · up to c8a01
The changes strengthen login checks and reduce secret exposure. The new process-wide credential registry nevertheless couples OAuth configurations through client ID alone, without binding credentials to their issuer or destination. This creates a conditional credential-isolation risk when configurations share an ID. No unauthenticated exploit was established, and custom-storage isolation and deployment recovery remain incompletely verified.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: The new process-wide registry selects credentials by client ID alone, while token-manager creation independently accepts the session's token URL. If OAuth configurations reuse an ID across issuers or credential contexts, later registration can substitute another configuration's secret; a secretless configuration can also inherit an existing secret. Refresh and revocation then send that selected secret to the independently retained endpoint. Unlike base behavior, these credential and destination choices no longer originate from the same configuration's session metadata. This is a conditional cross-configuration isolation concern, not a demonstrated unauthenticated attack.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The registry concern is bounded to configurations and newly constructed token managers sharing a client ID in one process. Existing initialized token managers retain their captured credential. A wrong credential can affect refresh and revocation or reach a differently owned endpoint, but remote reachability requires additional configuration or storage authority not established here.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The supplied cross-browser callback candidate remains deferred, not verified. Its cited lines are rejection tests with mocked network responses. Default Flask and FastAPI storage accesses the current request's framework session, countering an assumption that literal user: keys alone establish cross-browser sharing. StorageManager leaves those keys unnamespaced, however, and isolation for arbitrary shared or custom storage remains unproven.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Browser-supplied callback state must match stored login authority before code redemption, and returned ID-token nonce must match before session persistence. ID-token decoding disables signature verification and does not establish issuer, audience or expiry validation; authenticity consequently relies on the configured token endpoint and transport. Base already accepted token responses without this callback validation, so this limitation is not an introduced weakening.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Validated callback artifacts are consumed before exchange, preventing sequential reuse through the same updated storage state even when later validation fails. Consumption is separate read/delete operations, not an atomic transaction. Tokens are still persisted before user-info retrieval completes, so a later lookup failure can leave token state behind; that commit ordering also existed at base and is not reported as a new concern.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Resolve secrets through a registered issuer-and-client configuration that also owns approved token and revocation destinations. Define explicit replacement and removal semantics, and validate worker bootstrap, credential rotation and rollback without relying on credentials preserved by same-process tests.
proposed — Specify per-browser and per-login-attempt isolation for supported shared storage, with atomic consumption where the backend permits it. Validate independent browsers and concurrent callbacks against the same application before claiming deployment-wide single-use login authority.

handle_redirect only checked `state` when the callback carried one, so a
callback with the state parameter stripped skipped validation entirely
and went straight to token exchange (login CSRF / code injection). The
nonce stored at login was also never compared with the ID token.
- Always require state: reject the callback unless a state was stored for
a login started by the SDK in this session and the request presents the
same value. Callbacks with no login in progress (nothing stored) are
rejected before token exchange, with or without a state parameter.
- After token exchange, when a nonce was stored and the response has an
ID token, reject a missing or mismatched `nonce` claim.
- Consume stored state and nonce as soon as state validates, so they are
single-use even if exchange or nonce validation fails. A rejected
callback leaves the pending state in place, so a forged request cannot
clear it to make a later callback pass.
- Stop logging raw state values at warning level.
Adds testv2/testv2_auth/test_oauth_callback_security.py covering the
standalone, Flask and FastAPI callback paths.
The TestSmartOAuthPerformance tests measure wall time over a few
milliseconds. If an automatic full (gen-2) garbage collection is
triggered inside the timed region it adds ~50-110 ms for the current
test-suite heap, failing test_method_delegation_performance (< 10 ms)
regardless of SmartOAuth's delegation cost. Whether that happens depends
only on the allocation history of earlier tests, so adding unrelated
tests can flip it (seen on Python 3.10 CI).
Pause automatic GC only around each timed region and restore it in a
finally block (re-enabling only if it was enabled). Limits are unchanged.
…m sessions
- Only register a client secret when one is configured, so a secretless
OAuth instance for the same client_id can't clear it.
- Drop client_secret from user_info when saving a session and when loading
sessions written by older SDK versions.
- test_session_secrets: start the login through the SDK and pass the stored
state on the callback; add tests for both fixes.
- test_user_session: expect client_secret to be absent from stored and
restored user_info.

…-nonce
Stacks #209 on #206. The only conflict was the state check in
OAuth.handle_redirect; kept #209's version, which already drops the
state values from the logs as #206 does.

…stAPI callback
Review follow-up for #209.
- Reject the callback when no nonce was stored for the login (before the
code is redeemed) and when the token response has no ID token. Both
previously skipped the nonce check, so a swapped code from an
authorization request without `openid` could still establish a session.
- FastAPI /callback: reject a missing `code` with 400 before
handle_redirect, which would otherwise consume the pending state, nonce
and code verifier; return 400 for KindeLoginException instead of 500,
matching Flask. Removes the "State not found" branch, which nothing
raises.
- Tests: the no-ID-token test now expects a rejection; add tests for a
missing stored nonce and a missing code (Flask and FastAPI); FastAPI
route tests assert 400 exactly; test_session_secrets returns an ID token
with the login's nonce.

Callback and Account API failures no longer include response bodies. Refreshed
tokens are written back to the session, and the storage device ID is read from
the session so a restart or another worker stays signed in. Management API
feature-flag values accept bool and int, which the API returns but the spec
declares as strings.

The token issuer was already required to be https, but the KINDE_HOST
fallback was not checked. The client sends the user's access token, so
refuse to create it for a plain HTTP host.
- Session reads and writes in FrameworkAwareStorage, including that
values are not logged.
- Permission keys given as strings, dicts and objects.
- Account API feature flags given as dicts, and flags without a key.
- Device ID with no storage configured, and when the session write fails.
Reviewed the full source diff and ran it locally: pytest testv2 gives 523 passed, 3 skipped. Bandit shows no new findings, and the two “request without timeout” warnings that main has in oauth.py are gone.
The callback hardening looks right. A missing or mismatched state is rejected before anything is deleted, and state and nonce are single-use. The ID token nonce is checked after the exchange, and a response with no ID token is rejected. client_secret stays in memory and is stripped from sessions on save and load, which also cleans old stored sessions. Token errors no longer echo response bodies, and all requests have timeouts. Flask and FastAPI return 400 on rejected callbacks, and Flask binds user_id only after a successful login.
A few non-blocking items:
storage_manager.py still has except Exception: pass around the _device_id write (CodeRabbit’s open comment). A failed write means the device ID doesn’t persist across workers, and nothing says so. Please log it at least.
_get_account_api_host takes the host from the iss claim of an unverified token and sends the bearer token there. HTTPS is required, so the risk is small, but checking iss against the configured KINDE_HOST or domain would close it.
The FastAPI catch-all returns 400 for unexpected server errors. 500 would be more accurate.
A failed device ID write now logs a warning instead of being silently ignored.
The Account API host now always comes from your config. The token's iss is only used if it exactly matches a configured host; otherwise we log a warning and use the configured host.
Flask and FastAPI callbacks now return 500 for unexpected errors, and still return 400 for bad login requests.
…sessions on load
- The ID token's signature still isn't verified, but its issuer must now
match the configured Kinde host, its audience must include the client
ID, and it must not be expired, as OpenID Connect requires.
- When an old session still contains client_secret, write the cleaned
session back as soon as it's loaded, instead of waiting for the next
save.
Real Kinde ID tokens carry the client ID in aud, and the SDK now rejects
an ID token whose audience doesn't include the client ID
(kinde-oss/kinde-python-sdk#206). Without it, every signed-in test failed
at the callback.
@coderabbitai Fixed the outside-diff comment on kinde_sdk/core/helpers.py in 100274d: the six legacy Account API helpers now log only the HTTP status and the standard OAuth error code, not error_description. The tests now expect the shorter message.
Also took both nitpicks: the configured Account API host now uses the normalised origin (with a test for whitespace and a trailing slash), and the CHANGELOG entry describes the current host behaviour. The /logout order is fixed in the same commit, for both FastAPI and Flask.

@dtoxvanilla1991 Both points are addressed in the latest commits: the ID token's issuer, audience and expiry are now checked (JWKS signature verification follows in #214), and loading an old session now strips client_secret and saves the cleaned session back. Could you take another look and resolve these if you're happy?

🟡 Changes recommended
Token persistence is not retried after storage failures, risking session loss, and standalone user sessions discard supplied client secrets needed for confidential-client refresh and revocation.
This PR hardens the Python SDK’s authentication and session handling, incorporates #209’s callback validation, and fixes related token refresh and API integration issues.
Changes:
Removes sensitive logging and persisted client secrets, adds request timeouts, and returns generic callback errors.
Requires callback state and ID-token validation, improves session restoration and refresh persistence, and corrects logout behavior.
Fixes Account API host selection, permission matching, and feature-flag parsing, with regression tests and documentation.

Good point. This is handled in #210, which touches the same code: when a save fails, the refreshed tokens are kept and the save is retried on the next call, before any new refresh, without asking Kinde again. #206 and #210 change the same lines, so when this branch is updated after #210 merges, #210's version is the one we keep.

Thanks, fixed. If user_info has a client_secret and no OAuth client has set one up for that client ID, it's now kept in memory for the token manager. It's still never written to session storage, and it doesn't replace a secret an OAuth client has already set. Added tests for both.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
The token manager gets the client secret from the in-memory map that an
OAuth client fills in. Code that calls UserSession.set_user_data()
directly, with client_secret in user_info and no OAuth client, lost the
secret, so refresh and revoke were sent without it. Keep that secret in
memory (it's still never written to session storage), without replacing
a secret an OAuth client has already configured.
Assert the revoked token value in the logout revocation tests.
These logout tests check only that the revocation request goes to /oauth2/revoke. A change that posts the ID token or another token still passes. Assert that the posted token field equals the access token.

Add a test where the issuer matches the second configured host.
The existing host-selection tests do not cover this case. The OAuth-client-host test uses an issuer that matches the first candidate, which is also the fallback. A regression that stops matching the issuer would still return the client host and pass. The suggested test sets a different client host, sets KINDE_HOST to the issuer host, and asserts that KINDE_HOST is selected. It fails if the loop falls back to the first host. The fixture and the _auth_with_claims(..., client_id=...) call match the current helper, and the ACME casing is normalised by _https_origin.

A secret passed in user_info was written into the shared client_secrets
map, so later sessions for the same client without a secret picked it up.
Give it to that session's token manager instead. Updating an existing
session now also gives its manager a new secret (or the configured one for
its client) when it has none, while keeping a secret it already has.

Clear the session even when _oauth.logout raises.
The route now calls self._oauth.logout(user_id) before request.session.clear(). If logout raises, the exception skips the clear. The request returns a 500 and the user stays signed in. OAuth.logout can raise, for example when UserSession._load_from_storage or clear_device_data fails. The previous order always cleared the session.
Keep the new order, but clear the session in a finally block.
# Log out before clearing the session: after a restart, or on another worker,

Summary
This started as "stop leaking secrets", and grew while testing against the starter kit. It now covers three things:
1. No more secrets in logs or session storage
state, the user profile, session contents or stored values.client_secretis no longer written into the user's session (which can be a browser cookie). It's kept in memory instead. Old sessions that still contain it get cleaned up when they're loaded or saved.requestscalls now have a 30 second timeout.2. Safer login callback (from #209)
stateis always required and must match the login started in the same session.nonceis always checked. A missing nonce or missing ID token is rejected.stateandnoncecan only be used once.code.3. Bug fixes found while testing
force_api=True) went to a placeholder host and came back empty. They now use the token's issuer, orKINDE_HOSTas a fallback, and only over HTTPS.redirectparameter Kinde expects, with a newKINDE_POST_LOGOUT_REDIRECT_URIsetting.The full list is in the CHANGELOG.
