Summary

  • Google Pay display items are now valid: every cart item is sent as type: "LINE_ITEM" with status: "FINAL" | "PENDING". Before this, pending items were sent as type: "PENDING", which the request object reference does not allow.
  • If any item is pending, the total is an estimate: Android sends totalPriceStatus: "ESTIMATED" and iOS marks the synthesised total PKPaymentSummaryItem as .pending. Carts with only final items behave as before.
  • merchantName no longer falls back to "Example Merchant". Android trims the value and falls back to the app label (applicationInfo.loadLabel). If both are blank it omits the field, which Google allows.
  • Adds JVM unit tests for GooglePayRequestBuilder (junit + org.json as testImplementation) and keeps android/src/test out of the npm tarball.
  • Docs and README describe the pending-total behaviour and the merchantName fallback.

Closes #12

Test plan

  • cd package && bun run typecheck: passes
  • cd package && npx eslint "**/*.{js,ts,tsx}" (without --fix): 0 errors, 185 warnings, all in files this PR doesn't touch
  • cd package && bun run test:ci: 28/28 passed
  • bun run docs:build: passes
  • cd example/android && JAVA_HOME=<Android Studio jbr> ANDROID_HOME=~/Library/Android/sdk ./gradlew :gmisoftware_react-native-pay:testDebugUnitTest: 11/11 passed. Covers final-only, mixed and pending-only carts, the merchant name cases (trimmed value, missing, blank, no fallback), and the existing PRODUCTION validation. CI doesn't run this job yet (see Add native unit tests and native build jobs to CI #22).
  • xcrun swiftc -parse package/ios/HybridPaymentHandler.swift: parses. Not compiled or run.
  • cd example && bunx expo run:ios (not run)
  • cd example && bunx expo run:android (not run)
  • TEST Google Pay payment with a pending item on a device (acceptance criterion; not run)

Risk

  • Android, apps without merchantName: the Google Pay sheet now shows the app label instead of "Example Merchant". Nothing breaks, but users see a different name.
  • iOS, carts with a pending item: the grand total is now .pending. I couldn't confirm from Apple's docs how the sheet renders a pending total, so this needs a device check.
  • Android, carts with a pending item: totalPriceStatus changes from FINAL to ESTIMATED. Google allows this because the request doesn't set checkoutOption: COMPLETE_IMMEDIATE_PURCHASE, which requires FINAL.
  • No public TS API changes, and the Nitro specs are unchanged.

Pending cart items were sent as DisplayItem.type "PENDING", which is not a
valid type, and the total was always FINAL. Every item is now a LINE_ITEM with
status FINAL or PENDING, and any pending item makes totalPriceStatus ESTIMATED.
On iOS the synthesised total becomes .pending in the same case.

merchantName no longer falls back to "Example Merchant". Android uses the app
label instead, and omits the field if that is blank too.

Adds JVM unit tests for GooglePayRequestBuilder and keeps them out of the npm
tarball.

Closes #12

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Features
    • Payment sheets display the merchant name provided in the request, using the app name as a fallback when available.
    • Carts containing pending items show the total as an estimate. Items display their pending or final status consistently across Google Pay and Apple Pay.
  • Documentation
    • Updated setup and cart guidance to explain merchant name display, estimated totals, and how to handle a final amount that differs from the displayed total.

Google Pay now uses valid line-item types and statuses, estimates totals when items are pending, and resolves merchant names from the request or app label. Apple Pay marks totals pending when any item is pending. Documentation and Android tests cover these changes.

Google Pay display items now use LINE_ITEM with a separate FINAL or PENDING status. The total is ESTIMATED when any item is pending. The merchant name uses a trimmed request value, then the app label, and is omitted if neither is available. Tests cover these values and production validation. The package excludes Android tests from published files.

The Apple Pay total item is pending when any payment item is pending. The documentation describes platform-specific estimated-total statuses, merchant-name display and fallback behavior, and handling a final amount that differs from the displayed total.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #12 is open and directly linked. The implementation sends every Android display item as LINE_ITEM with FINAL or PENDING status. It sends ESTIMATED when any item is pending and FINAL otherwise. iOS marks the synthesized total as .pending when required. Android trims merchantName, uses the app label as fallback, and omits it when both values are blank. JVM tests cover final-only, mixed, pending-only, merchant-name, and production-validation cases. The richer item-kind mapping is optional follow-up work, not a requirement. The unrun device payment check is manual testing and does not create a coding gap.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed Android and iOS code implements Issue #12. The tests, test dependencies, package exclusion, and documentation support that implementation. No changed file shows unrelated product behavior. The optional richer item-kind mapping remains correctly excluded.

Full details: Security Check

Explanation

No medium, high, or critical vulnerability is introduced by this PR. The changed Android code uses JSONObject.put for merchant names, labels, amounts, and gateway fields, so request values are JSON-encoded rather than concatenated into executable content. The new app-label fallback is local application metadata. The payment-item changes only select fixed Google Pay constants and do not alter authentication or authorization. The added JUnit and org.json dependencies are testImplementation-only and are not runtime package dependencies. The existing payment-request logging remains unchanged in behavior and does not log payment tokens.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 30.77% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 26 functions across 5 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Google Pay requires the charged amount to match totalPrice; an ESTIMATED
total does not lift that. Point to a new payment with the final amount, or a
gateway that supports adjusting it.
