What does this change?

On Android, onError carries two kinds of failure:

  • Load failures come before onLoad, and nothing is shown.
  • Page failures (page-render-failed, out-of-memory while rendering) come after onLoad, with error.page set, and the document stays open.

The docs read as if every onError ended the load. The example replaced a working document with its error card when one page failed.

Types:

  • onError now receives PdfLoadError | PdfPageError. Both are new exported interfaces that extend PdfError:
    • PdfLoadError: page?: undefined, any code except page-render-failed.
    • PdfPageError: page: number, code: 'page-render-failed' | 'out-of-memory', no sourceIndex.
  • error.page !== undefined narrows the argument to PdfPageError, so the rule the docs state is now checked by the compiler.
  • The Nitro struct and spec are unchanged: native still sends PdfError, and PdfView casts it once at the boundary. Native sets page only on its render paths, and iOS never sets it. The issue ruled out a union in 1.x because it would change the Nitro struct; this one doesn't.
  • Handlers typed with PdfError still compile.

Docs:

  • onError gets TSDoc, and its row in docs/api.md gets a description and the new signature. The Types table lists PdfLoadError / PdfPageError.
  • docs/api.md "Errors" says what the viewer does with the page:
    • page-render-failed: the page stays blank until the document loads again, reported once per page.
    • out-of-memory: the viewer frees memory and tries the page again later, reported once per document.
    • The issue's suggested text said "a new source retries it" for both codes; that holds for page-render-failed only. The 30 s backoff and the tile fallback stay in ARCHITECTURE.md, which already described them.
  • PdfError.page and PdfError.sourceIndex docs now match render OOM, which carries page and no sourceIndex.
  • "Loading state" in guides/sources-and-loading.md says "until onLoad, or onError without error.page". It shows an onError that keeps the viewer for page errors. The migration guide had the same "until onLoad / onError" line, and now matches.
  • One line in docs/limitations.md (Android) and one row in docs/troubleshooting.md.

Example: ViewerScreen keeps the document when an error has a page and shows error: <code> on page <n> in the event row. Load errors still show the error card.

No native code changes.

Open #71 makes source={[]} fail with no sourceIndex. The new PdfError.sourceIndex wording doesn't name that case, so whichever PR lands second should add it to that sentence. #71's JS-side error is a literal 'invalid-source', so it fits PdfLoadError. OfflineScreen (onError={setError}) shows the code as a line above the document and never hides it, so it is unchanged.

Behavior changes

  • None at runtime. TypeScript only: onError's argument is PdfLoadError | PdfPageError instead of PdfError. Code that calls a PdfViewProps['onError'] handler with a plain PdfError now needs a cast.

Closes #68

How was it verified?

  • bun run lint, bun run typecheck and bun run test (113 tests, 1 new) pass. bun run specs leaves package/nitrogen unchanged.

  • The new test in PdfView.test.tsx covers four things:

    • routing: a load error and a page error sent through the native callback reach the handler;
    • narrowing: inside error.page !== undefined, code is 'page-render-failed' | 'out-of-memory';
    • the else branch: @ts-expect-error on code === 'page-render-failed';
    • compatibility: a handler typed (error: PdfError) => void is still accepted.

Compiled against the old PdfError parameter, the same handler fails with TS2322 and TS2578.

  • The documented behavior was read from the code:

    • PdfDocumentView.onRenderFailed: OOM trims and reports once, without touching RenderFailures; other failures go through RenderFailures.
    • RenderFailures: one retry and one report per page, cleared by clearDocument.
    • The two onError routes in HybridBetterPdfView.kt.
    • iOS calls onError only from reload().

Not verified:

  • The example's new branch on a device. No fixture fails a single page, so testing it would need a temporary fault in renderPixels.
  • The issue's suggested JVM test of PdfDocumentView.onRenderFailed was not added. PdfDocumentView is a View that can't be constructed on the JVM without Robolectric, which the project doesn't use. RenderFailuresTest already covers retry once, report once, and not planning the page again. Only the once-per-document OOM flag is untested.

Scope

  • Platforms: types and docs for both; the behavior described is Android only
  • Android versions: all

Checklist

  • bun run lint, bun run typecheck and bun run test pass
  • New behavior is covered by a test (JS, Kotlin JVM or an end-to-end flow): JS, for the error types and their routing
  • Nitro specs changed? Not changed (nitrogen output unchanged)
  • Public API changed? PdfLoadError / PdfPageError exported; onError's argument narrowed to their union; docs updated
  • Native change? None
  • Performance claim? None
  • Commits follow Conventional Commits
  • Behavior changed without a type change? No runtime change; the type change is listed above

On Android, page-render-failed and out-of-memory while rendering arrive
through onError after onLoad, with error.page set, and the document stays
open. The docs read as if every onError ended the load, and the example
replaced the document with its error card.

onError now receives PdfLoadError | PdfPageError, so error.page !==
undefined narrows the type. The Nitro struct is unchanged: PdfView casts
native's PdfError once at the boundary, and handlers typed with PdfError
still compile. The docs say which errors come after onLoad and what
happens to the page, and the example keeps the document for page errors.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added distinct PDF load and page-rendering error types.
    • Page-rendering errors now report the affected page, while documents remain open.
    • Exported the new error types for use in applications.
  • Documentation

    • Updated error handling, loading, migration, limitations, and troubleshooting guidance.
    • Clarified Android behavior for page-rendering and out-of-memory errors.
  • Examples

    • Viewer example now displays page-specific errors without entering the failed state.

The public onError contract now distinguishes load failures from Android page-render failures with PdfLoadError and `PdfPageError. The example keeps the viewer visible for errors with a page and shows load errors as failed. The documentation describes this distinction.

Changes: PDF error handling

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed TypeScript types, API documentation, loading guides, troubleshooting text, migration guidance, example handling, and type tests all support #68. No unrelated production behavior or native implementation change is shown. The migration documentation and compatibility test are supporting changes, not scope violations.

Full details: Security Check

Explanation

No medium, high, or critical vulnerability was introduced. The PR changes TypeScript types, documentation, and example handling. The new example output places only the bounded native error code and numeric page index in a React Native Text component, not an executable or URL sink. The native callback remains typed as PdfError and the PR only casts it at the JavaScript boundary; no authentication, authorization, parsing, networking, dependency, or secret-handling logic changed.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

PR #72 implements the main #68 requirements. PdfError.ts documents page and sourceIndex, exports PdfLoadError and PdfPageError, and PdfView.tsx documents and types the narrowing behavior. ViewerScreen.tsx keeps the document for page errors and preserves the load-error state. The native boundary remains a cast, so the Nitro struct is unchanged. However, #68 also requests automated coverage for PdfDocumentView.onRenderFailed, including one report after retry, one out-of-memory report per document, no further page planning, and document persistence. The PR states that this test was not added and that the out-of-memory flag remains untested.

Resolution

Add automated coverage for PdfDocumentView.onRenderFailed that verifies the four #68 behaviors. Use the project’s available test approach or add the required Robolectric support if that is necessary.

Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 2 functions across 5 files. (5 skipped: 5 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Add the requested Android callback regression test.

The changed test invokes a synthetic JavaScript onError callback. It does not exercise PdfDocumentView.onRenderFailed. Add a JVM/Robolectric test that opens a document, checks page-render-failed and rendering out-of-memory preserve the failure page and the open document, and checks that repeated rendering OOM failures report only once per document. Existing tests cover RenderFailures and session recording, not this view callback.
