Review comments at @docs/guides/sources-and-loading.md:
- Around line 32-35: Update the PdfView empty-state documentation to accurately
describe ref behavior: navigation and search methods are ignored, getStats()
returns null, and only promise-returning methods reject before mount. Remove the
blanket claim that all ref methods reject.
Review comments at @package/src/source.ts:
- Around line 281-285: Update the invalid-source return branch in the source
validation flow to always set sourceIndex from index, including for a single
source, so it reports 0 consistently with the documented contract and native
loaders. Update the corresponding expectations in source.test.ts and
PdfView.test.tsx from undefined to 0.
- Around line 212-220: Update normalizeUriSource to use a URI-specific
description for invalid object inputs lacking a uri property, while retaining
describeSourceType for other invalid values. Use that description in the thrown
“source must be an object with uri” error so valid filePath objects are reported
as objects without uri rather than as missing uri, filePath, or base64.

Hey @duquerson, thanks a lot for picking up #66, it's really great to get a PR like this! It follows the issue closely, the tests are thorough, and you handled the CodeRabbit points quickly: sourceIndex: 0 for a single source and the ref behaviour in the docs are exactly right.
There's one thing left to fix and a few small ones. Once those are in, I'm happy to merge 🙌
PdfPageOverlay children still throw while the source is empty or invalid
The early return renders children without OverlayRegistryContext.Provider, so
<PdfView source={null}>
<PdfPageOverlay page={0} x={0} y={0} width={10} height={10} />
</PdfView>throws PdfPageOverlay must be rendered inside a PdfView during render. That is the same failure #66 is about, for apps that keep their overlays mounted while the document isn't known yet. An invalid source takes the same path.
One way to fix it: drop the early return and render only the native view conditionally, so children keep their provider and layer in every state:
return (
<View {...viewProps} style={[styles.box, style]} collapsable={false}>
{inspection.status === 'valid' && (
<NativeBetterPdfView
…
/>
)}
{children != null && (
// unchanged
)}
</View>
);I tried this on top of 17c35dc: tests, lint and typecheck pass. With it, an overlay mounted while source is null reaches native in overlays once a source arrives, and children are no longer remounted on null → source (today they are, because the tree under the box changes shape). A test for the overlay case would be great too.
Smaller things
normalizeSourceandnormalizeSourcesare only called by tests now, andnormalizeSourcesquietly turns an invalid source into[]. I'd move their existing tests toinspectSources/validateSourceItemand remove both.sourceIndex: isList ? index : 0is alwaysindex: a single source is item 0 of[source].- Formatting: seven files in
package/srcdon't match.prettierrc; the rest ofpackage/srconmaindoes.bunx prettier --write package/srcfixes it (bun run formatwould also reformat unrelated docs). docs/api-design.md, which you flagged: CONTRIBUTING asks for it on public API changes. Thesourcerow in its Props table still saysPdfSource, required. Changing it toPdfSource | PdfSource[] | null, optional, covers this PR, and also the list form that #60 missed there.
Thanks again!

Thanks for the thorough review @jkasprzyk17, and for the pointers! I've pushed two commits addressing everything: Main fix: overlays with an empty or invalid source

Thanks @duquerson, this looks great! I went through 12ae065: the overlay fix, the new tests, the moved I pushed one small docs commit on top (446b84b). #73 landed while you were working on this, and since then the ref's promise methods reject with a Once the workflow runs are green, we'll merge 🚀 |
What does this change?
Fixes handling of missing and malformed PDF sources.
PdfViewnow acceptssource={null}andsource={undefined}as an empty state. It renders the container without mounting the native PDF view, emits no events, and mounts or unmounts the native view correctly when the source changes.Malformed runtime values such as strings,
{},{ uri: 42 }, and[null]no longer throw during render. They reportinvalid-sourcethroughonError, includingsourceIndexfor invalid items in a source list.PdfDocument.openandPdfCache.downloadnow reject with typed errors for invalid sources. Empty source lists no longer report a nonexistentsourceIndex.The public
PdfViewProps.sourcetype is now optional and acceptsnull. Invalid JavaScript values remain runtime errors reported through the documented error path.Closes #66.
