PR 11 of 13 for clerk migrate (plan: slice-prs.md on #479). Stacked on #528: review that first, then this one, which shows only its own diff. It adds Auth.js export and import. Still behind CLERK_EXPERIMENTAL=migrate.

Try it

CLERK_EXPERIMENTAL=migrate clerk migrate export authjs --db-url "$AUTHJS_DB_URL"
CLERK_EXPERIMENTAL=migrate clerk migrate import <export-run-id> --dry-run

What it does

  • export authjs reads id, name, email and emailVerified from a table called User, user or users. It falls back to email_verified for the legacy NextAuth table or a Prisma @map.
  • A schema that renames another column gets a message with the query to run instead, aliasing the column back.

Reviewing

Ported from #479 at 7a820406. sources/authjs.ts and export/authjs.ts match #479. One change from #479: the missing-column hint in lib/db.ts no longer tells you to write your own query for @map("email_verified"), which the exporter now reads. Its example is a renamed name column instead.

Tests

  • bun run test covers the unit and integration tests.
  • The live slice suite (pnpm test:migrate:slice4e) exports from the real Auth.js test app, including a snake_case email_verified schema with half the users unverified.

📝 Walkthrough

The migration CLI now exports users from Auth.js databases and registers Auth.js as a migration source. Export discovers supported user tables and verification columns, then maps rows to exported users. Import maps user fields, routes users based on email-verification timestamps, and splits names. Shared database export handling converts valid dates to ISO strings and omits invalid dates. Tests and documentation cover both migration paths, connection options, and data that Auth.js does not carry.

Approving. A few non-blocking notes:

  • Missing-column hint query fails on the Prisma schema it uses as its example (packages/cli-core/src/commands/migrate/lib/db.ts:380): The hint's example is a Prisma schema with @map("full_name") on name, but its query selects email_verified. A default Prisma Auth.js schema names that column emailVerified, and the table is "User", which Postgres requires to be quoted. A user who copies this query gets another column "email_verified" does not exist error. They need "emailVerified" AS email_verified so the authjs source can still map the column.

  • MySQL 'no user table' error gets connection advice (packages/cli-core/src/commands/migrate/export/authjs.ts:111): On MySQL with no Auth.js table, the export throws No Auth.js user table found. Tried User, user, users. Table 'db.users' doesn't exist. isMissingTable here matches doesn't exist, but the table check in describeDbError (db.ts:388) only matches does not exist. The error falls through to the generic hint, "Check the connection string, that the server is running, and that it is reachable from here." That sends the user to the connection, which worked. Postgres and SQLite get the correct 'expected table was not found' hint.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve created_at in the built-in Auth.js export.

authjsSource documents created_at and maps it to createdAt. However, fetchAuthJsUsers selects only four columns, and buildAuthJsExport emits no created_at. A table with a meaningful created_at therefore exports successfully but loses that timestamp before --source authjs imports it.

Update fetchAuthJsUsers and buildAuthJsQuery to read created_at when the optional column exists, while retaining the current fallback for schemas without it. Emit the value from buildAuthJsExport, and add a round-trip assertion. updated_at is only an optional transformer mapping; the source description does not promise it for the built-in export.

Treat numeric 0 as an unverified Auth.js timestamp.

email_verified: 0 survives the Auth.js transform and reaches routeByVerification. The shared isVerified helper treats every number as verified, so the importer keeps the address in email. splitIdentifiers then uses that address as the primary verified email.

Apply the check in packages/cli-core/src/commands/migrate/sources/shared.ts, where timestamp verification is shared.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve created_at in Auth.js exports.

export authjs records authjs as the source. Importing that export run applies the registered Auth.js transformer. The transformer maps created_at to createdAt, but the exporter does not select or emit created_at. Auth.js has no default for the missing field, so the import request omits created_at. Source creation times are lost for tables that provide them.

Extend the exporter to read and emit created_at when available. Keep the existing table and verification-column fallback so schemas without this optional column remain supported.

Treat numeric email_verified: 0 as unverified for Auth.js imports.

Direct JSON imports accept numeric field values. The Auth.js exporter defines 0 as no verification, but this mapping passes it to timestamp verification, where every number is treated as verified. The migration therefore keeps the email as a verified primary address instead of moving it to unverifiedEmailAddresses.

Preserve created_at in Auth.js exports.

The Auth.js source contract accepts created_at and maps it to createdAt. The exporter does not select or emit this field. Auth.js users with a creation timestamp therefore lose it during migration. Include created_at when the source table provides it, without making it mandatory for adapters that do not have the column.

Include Auth.js creation and update timestamps in the export.

The Auth.js source maps created_at and updated_at from each exported record to createdAt and updatedAt. The exporter query does not select these columns, so an export followed by the reachable Auth.js import silently loses both timestamps. Select and serialize both columns in this exporter.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff comments on sources/authjs.ts and export/authjs.ts that had no reply:

  • Treat numeric email_verified: 0 as unverified on import (2026-10-15 20:09 and 22:55): fixed in ed3c528, in the Auth.js source's postTransform. A 0 or "0" is unverified, matching the export's rule that the epoch is no verification. I left the shared isVerified alone, since Supabase also uses it.
  • Require parseable verification timestamps (2026-10-14 23:27): fixed in the same place. A string that isn't a date is unverified. Your suggested new Date(value) check wasn't used as is: a string of digits is a stored integer timestamp (a SQLite or CSV export), and Date.parse rejects it, so digits alone stay verified unless they're 0. The tests cover 0, "0", "not-a-date", an integer, a digit string and a Postgres timestamp.
  • Keep created_at in the export (2026-10-15 17:10 and 22:03, 2026-10-16 18:16 and 19:38): fixed in ed3c528, but narrower than the suggested SELECT created_at, updated_at. Auth.js's own Prisma, Drizzle and Supabase-adapter schemas have no creation-time column, so selecting it unconditionally would break every default export. Only the legacy NextAuth users table has one. The export now tries created_at on that table, falls back without it on a missing-column error, and writes it when present. updated_at isn't exported, because Clerk's create-user call takes no update time, and the dead updated_at mapping in the source is removed. Test: a legacy table with and without created_at.

@royanger Thanks for the clarification. I inspected both files and the regression tests. The changes address all three findings:

  • Zero verification values: Auth.js postTransform clears numeric 0 and string "0" before verification routing.
  • Verification timestamps: Invalid date strings become unverified. Nonzero digit-only strings remain valid integer timestamps.
  • Creation timestamps: The legacy email_verified query attempts created_at, then retries without it if the column is missing. The exporter retains created_at when present. The source no longer maps updated_at.

The tests cover the reported verification values and legacy tables with and without created_at. I inspected the tests but did not run them.

The Auth.js-specific validation avoids changing the shared verification behavior. My earlier suggestion to select both timestamps unconditionally was too broad.

Learning: In clerk/cli, packages/cli-core/src/commands/migrate/sources/authjs.ts validates email_verified in its Auth.js-specific postTransform before routeByVerification. Numeric zero and digit-only strings representing zero are unverified. Nonzero digit-only strings represent stored integer timestamps and remain verified even if Date.parse rejects them. Other strings must be parseable dates. Keep this validation source-specific rather than changing shared isVerified, which Supabase also uses.

Learning: In clerk/cli Auth.js migrations, default Prisma, Drizzle, and Supabase-adapter schemas do not provide a creation-time column. packages/cli-core/src/commands/migrate/export/authjs.ts attempts created_at with the legacy email_verified query shape and retries without created_at on a missing-column error. Do not recommend selecting created_at unconditionally. The exporter omits updated_at, and packages/cli-core/src/commands/migrate/sources/authjs.ts does not map it, because Clerk's create-user call does not accept an update time.

Treat a zero-epoch Date as unverified before serialization.

The MySQL Auth.js path can return emailVerified as a JavaScript Date. Date(0) is truthy, so the exporter writes "1970-01-01T00:00:00.000Z". The importer treats that valid date string as verified, contrary to this migration's Auth.js zero-epoch contract.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff comment on export/authjs.ts:159-164 (treat a zero-epoch Date as unverified before serialization): fixed in 66a67cc, as suggested. A Date whose time is 0 exports with no email_verified, like a numeric 0. Test: new Date(0) exports as unverified, and a real date still exports. It fails without the fix.

@royanger Thanks. I verified that buildAuthJsExport excludes a Date whose getTime() is 0 before serialization. The regression test checks that new Date(0) omits email_verified and that a nonzero date still exports as an ISO timestamp.

I inspected the test but did not run it. This addresses the finding.

`clerk migrate export authjs` reads an Auth.js database over --db-url (or
AUTHJS_DB_URL, or a prompt): Postgres, MySQL, libsql/Turso or SQLite. Auth.js
has no single schema, so it tries the `User`, `user` and `users` tables in
turn and reports which one it read, and reads the verified column as
`emailVerified`, or `email_verified` on a legacy NextAuth table. A schema
missing a column the export reads gets advice naming the columns and a
SELECT to export with instead.
`clerk migrate import` reads Auth.js exports: `email_verified` is a nullable
timestamp, `name` is split into first and last name, and users arrive
without passwords, since Auth.js core is passwordless.

…rted

The warning said Auth.js users sign in with OAuth or email links. An app
using the Credentials provider keeps its own passwords, which the export
does not read, so the operator needs to migrate those separately or have
those users reset their password. The warning, the source note and the
README now say so.

… columns

Postgres keeps a quoted "User" apart from "user", so an app's own User
table stopped the search before Auth.js's table was tried. A candidate
without the columns is now passed over; the first column error is still
the one thrown when nothing reads.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The Auth.js hint replaced the only test of the generic advice that the
Supabase and Better Auth exports get.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…wn example

The hint names a Prisma schema but selected email_verified, while
Prisma's Auth.js schema has "emailVerified" in a quoted "User" table,
so the query it suggested failed the same way. It now aliases that
column, quotes the table, and says MySQL quotes with backticks.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The Auth.js section says its core stores no passwords, but the list of
platforms that export none named only three. Auth.js is the fourth, and
its export says so on every run like the others.

…er it chose to

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…th schema

The lookup tried only unqualified names, so an app on @auth/supabase-adapter
got "No Auth.js user table found", or, with its own public.users, silently
read that instead. On Postgres, next_auth.users is now tried first, with the
schema and table quoted apart.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…export

A MySQL zero date can come back from Bun as an Invalid Date, whose
toISOString() throws and ends the export. One shared guard, used by the
Supabase, Better Auth and Auth.js exports, leaves such a value out: for
Auth.js's emailVerified, that reads as unverified.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
"Four platforms export no passwords" and "These three read the database" each
went stale when the next platform landed.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Any single word with an @ was dropped as Auth0's email placeholder, so an
Auth.js user named "jane@acme" lost their name. Now only a name that is one
of the user's own email addresses is dropped, for every source.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… rows

A date that holds no real date is left out of the export, but the Supabase
and Better Auth coverage counted it from the row, so the report called the
user confirmed while the file said unverified.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ified, and keep a legacy table's created_at

- The import treated `email_verified: 0` (or "0") and a value that isn't a
date as verified, though the export reads 0 as no verification. Both are
now unverified. Digits alone stay a stored integer timestamp.
- The export reads `created_at` from a legacy NextAuth table that has one,
and falls back when it doesn't. Auth.js's own schemas have none.
- The dead `updated_at` mapping is gone: Clerk's create takes no update time.
- The README says both.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Postgres and MySQL hand back email_verified as a Date. A Date(0) is truthy,
so it exported as 1970-01-01 and imported as verified, against the rule
that the epoch is no verification. It now exports as unverified, like a
numeric 0.
