PR 12 of 13 for clerk migrate (plan: slice-prs.md on #479). Stacked on #529: review that first, then this one, which shows only its own diff. It adds custom sources and clerk migrate sources. Still behind CLERK_EXPERIMENTAL=migrate.

Try it

CLERK_EXPERIMENTAL=migrate clerk migrate sources
CLERK_EXPERIMENTAL=migrate clerk migrate sources betterauth
CLERK_EXPERIMENTAL=migrate clerk migrate import users.json --source ./my-source.ts --dry-run

What it does

  • --source also takes the path to a source you wrote. It's loaded and checked before anything is read or sent.
  • A run records the source file's hash, so an edited source counts as a different source when a re-run decides whether to continue.
  • Every import but a dry run takes a lock before its checks: clerk-migrate-import-<hash>.lock in the temp directory, keyed by the file, source and instance. A second import of the same file into the same instance is refused even before either writes a run, whatever --runs-dir each uses. This applies to every source, not only custom ones; the README's "The import lock" section covers it.
  • A re-run with an edited custom source is refused, naming the earlier run, unless it passes --new-run.
  • migrate sources lists the built-in sources and what each carries across, or shows one in full. Completion offers the source names.

Reviewing

Ported from #479 at 7a820406. The follow-ups since, including the import lock, were made on this slice and cherry-picked onto #479, so sources/load-custom.ts, sources/list.ts, sources/registry.ts and run.ts match #479's head, apart from what #531 adds. index.ts keeps direct calls to each handler rather than #479's migrate object.

Tests

  • bun run test covers the unit and integration tests.
  • The live slice suite (pnpm test:migrate:slice5) imports a made-up export through its own custom source, and checks a broken source is refused.

📝 Walkthrough

The migration CLI adds migrate sources to list built-in sources and inspect built-in or custom sources. Imports can load JavaScript or TypeScript source files with mappings, defaults, and transform hooks. Import records retain custom-source hashes and export-envelope source details for run matching and continuation. Non-dry-run imports acquire locks keyed by input-file hash and instance identity.

Here a source you wrote replaces the export's, but the run is still recorded under the custom key. The resume match (sameJob), assertNoActiveImport and the import lock all key on source. So import <export> --source ./mine.ts never sees an earlier import <export> of the same file into the same instance. That earlier import is the case this commit is for: import with the built-in, notice metadata.username is missing, write a source, re-run. The re-run starts a new run beside the first without a word, and every user the first one created comes back as a conflict. That's exactly what the edited-source refusal at lines 513-526 now stops. Two concurrent imports of one export, one through each source, also take different locks, though the README says a second import of the same file into the same instance is refused.

Could the lock, the live-run scan and the earlier refusal match on file and instance only, and leave source and hash to latest? Then any unfinished run of this file into this instance, under another source or another version of one, needs --new-run or an undo first.

Done in 32800d4, as you suggested. The import lock, assertNoActiveImport and the earlier-run refusal now match on the file and the instance only, and latest, the run to continue, still needs the same source and sourceHash. So import <export> --source ./mine.ts after a built-in import <export> refuses with exit 2, naming that run "with the auth0 source", unless --new-run or an undo. Two imports of one export through different sources take the same lock, since the lock key is now the file's sha256 and the instance. The "Clerk didn't confirm the instance" check follows the same rule. Tests: the refusal after a built-in import (and --new-run getting past it), and a built-in's held lock refusing the custom import. Both fail without the fix.

users, in the platform's own shape, so it can bring across what the built-in
mapping leaves out, such as a WorkOS `metadata.username`. The import keeps its
link to the export run, and `run.json` records the source the envelope named
as `envelopeSource`.

For a Firebase export this drops the hash parameters. In runImport, everything Firebase-specific keys on source === "firebase" (run.ts:859, run.ts:872, and resolveFirebaseHashConfig), and with a source you wrote, source is the custom key. So the envelope's firebase block never reaches context.firebaseHashConfig, --firebase-* flags are silently ignored, and the run records no firebaseHash. A source that copies Firebase's postTransform to keep passwords has no way to get the parameters, and lines 277-278 just told the reader the export carries them. Keying those checks on options.envelopeSource ?? source would pass them through. Otherwise, this paragraph should say that a Firebase export's passwords need the built-in source.

Fixed in 32800d4 with your first option: every Firebase check keys on options.envelopeSource ?? source. So a source you wrote over a Firebase export gets the envelope's parameters, or the flags or variables, in context.firebaseHashConfig, gets the prompt and the shape check, and the run records firebaseHash. The paragraph now says so. Test: a custom source whose postTransform builds the digest from context.firebaseHashConfig imports with HASH$SALT$SIGNER$Bw==$8$14, and the run records a firebaseHash. It fails without the fix.

@royanger Verified by code inspection. In run.ts, Line 532, findResume() now checks other runs when the exact-hash run is fully undone, not only when no exact-hash run exists.

The regression test places an older interrupted run behind an undone exact-hash run. It checks that the import refuses with exit 2, identifies the older run, and creates no users.

This addresses the outside-diff comment. I did not execute the tests.

Learning: In clerk/cli, custom migration source resume identity in packages/cli-core/src/commands/migrate/sources/registry.ts intentionally hashes only the source entry file, not its imported dependencies. Full import-graph resolution and bundling cannot be relied on in the compiled binary; following only relative imports would provide incomplete coverage. packages/cli-core/src/commands/migrate/README.md documents that users must pass --new-run after editing an imported helper rather than continue a run created with the old helper. Do not require dependency hashing under this documented contract.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Match earlierRunHolding on file and instance only, not on source.

findResume, assertNoActiveImport and the import lock now match on file and instance only. earlierRunHolding still skips records where record.source !== source. Consider an import under --new-run with a custom source, after a built-in import of the same export. The checks reject the users that the built-in run created as ALREADY_IMPORTED. The refusal then names no earlier run and offers no undo command. The user sees the generic "Fix them" text. The guidance does not say that their own earlier run holds those users.

Drop the source filter in earlierRunHolding. The sameFile flag already separates this file from an earlier version of it.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff comment on run.ts:1232 (match earlierRunHolding on file and instance only): fixed in 06a8b0a. The source filter and the now-unused source parameter are gone, so the refusal names an earlier run of any source that holds the users, as findResume and the import lock already do. Test: a run with one custom source, then --new-run with another, gets a refusal naming the first run with its undo. It fails without the fix.

  • earlierRunHolding() no longer takes a source parameter or filters by source.

`clerk migrate import --source` now also takes the path to a source you
wrote, loaded at runtime and validated before use. An import run records
a custom source's content hash, so an edited source is a different one
when a re-run decides whether to continue. `clerk migrate sources` lists
the built-in sources with what each brings across, or shows one in full.

file, source key and instance, whatever its source hash or --new-run.

The listing said a file takes `--source <key>`, but a custom source is
loaded by its path, and its key reads as an unknown built-in. It now
says `--source <key|path>`, as the flag's own help does.

…fore its checks

The check for a live import of the same file read the runs folder
before the checks and prompts, but a run is locked only once it is
written: two processes could both pass the check and start runs side
by side. An import now takes an exclusive lock keyed by the runs
folder, file hash, source key and instance before its checks and holds
it to the end. It lives in the temp directory, since nothing may be
written to the runs folder before consent; a dry run takes none.

An import hashed a custom source's file and recorded that, but the
module loader caches by specifier, so loading an edited file at the
same path again in one process returned the old module, and the
registry kept the first entry registered under the key. A run could
record the new hash beside the old mappings.

The file is hashed first and imported by plain path with that hash as
its query, which Bun loads afresh (a `file://` URL keeps its first
module whatever the query), and a later load of a key replaces the
earlier one.

A local helper a custom source imports is not hashed with it, so an
edit to one does not mark the source as changed. The README now says
to pass --new-run after editing a helper.

…strings

`migrate sources` wraps each caveat as text, so `caveats: [42]` crashed it
with a raw TypeError and `caveats: "text"` printed one bullet per character.
validateSource now checks it next to the hooks.

…and lock an import whatever its runs folder

An edited custom source misses the earlier run's sourceHash, so a re-run
started a new run without saying so, and the users the earlier run created
came back as conflicts. findResume now refuses with exit 2 naming that run,
unless it was undone; --new-run starts a new one anyway. Tests cover the
resume decision: an unchanged source continues, an edited one is refused,
and --new-run starts a new run.

The import lock was keyed by the runs folder too, so two imports of the same
file into the same instance with different --runs-dir values did not block
each other. It is keyed by the file, source and instance alone.

The README documents the lock file, and says `migrate sources` runs a source
file when given its path.

…fused

On a filesystem without hard links, acquireLockFile writes the lock itself
with `wx`, so "every write is a .tmp" failed there although the code was
right. The check now holds only when the link went through, and a new test
forces the link to fail and checks the fallback writes the lock exclusively.

`clerk migrate import <export> --source ./custom.ts` was refused whenever the
envelope named a built-in source, so bringing across a field the built-in
mapping leaves out (a WorkOS metadata.username, an Auth.js name that is a
username) meant stripping the envelope into a new file and losing the link
to the export run.

A source given by path now replaces the envelope's and reads its users in the
platform's own shape. The import keeps fromExport, records the source the
envelope named as envelopeSource, and its printed commands keep --source.
One built-in name against another is still refused, and that message now
points at a source you write.

…n's run is unfinished, not just the newest

The check took the newest run of the file, source and instance; when that
one was undone, an older run that still held its users was never looked at,
and the import started a new run beside it. Any run not undone in full now
refuses, and the suggested undo keeps the runs folder and target flags.

…d pass Firebase's parameters to a source you wrote

From Wyatt's review of #530:

- A run is recorded under its source's key, and the import lock, the
live-run scan and the earlier-run refusal all matched on it. So importing
an export with the built-in, then re-running it through a source you
wrote, started a second run beside the first, and two imports of one
export through different sources took different locks. The three now
match on the file and the instance only; only the run to continue needs
the same source and version. The refusal names the other source.
- A Firebase export through a source you wrote lost its hash parameters:
every Firebase check keyed on `source === "firebase"`, and the source was
the custom key. They now key on the envelope's source too, so the
parameters reach `context.firebaseHashConfig` and the run records its
  firebaseHash.

…h, and create the lock's temp file exclusively

- findResume started a new run when the exact-version run was undone,
without checking the other runs of the file. An older version's
interrupted run behind it then had its users come back as conflicts. It
now checks them, as it does when there's no exact match.
- The lock's temporary file gets a random name and `wx`: no planted link
at a predictable name in a shared /tmp, and a crashed run's leftover
under the same PID never reads as a held lock.
- runs <id> says SOURCE_FILE is to be replaced with the source's path.
- The README says the export command shows only where one exists, and
that a copy of a source beside different helpers also needs --new-run.

…its users

earlierRunHolding still skipped runs of another source, though findResume
and the import lock match on file and instance only. A custom-source
--new-run beside a built-in run of the same file got the generic "Fix them"
text instead of the run holding its users. It now matches any source.
