feat(starters): move the qwik add prisma starter to Prisma ORM 8 with PostgreSQL - #9358
qwik add prisma still installs Prisma ORM 5.3.1 with SQLite and creates a new PrismaClient() in every loader and action. This PR moves the starter to Prisma ORM 8 with PostgreSQL, matching the integration guide in #9357, so a developer can add Prisma through the supported qwik add flow without rewriting the generated setup.
What the starter now adds
prisma/contract.prisma with the same User model as before, prisma.config.ts, and .env.example.
prisma/db.ts: one database client for the whole server, shared by every route, built from the files that prisma contract emit generates (prisma/contract.json and prisma/contract.d.ts).
The three demo routes (/users, /users/[userId], /create) rewritten on the ORM 8 query API: db.orm.public.User.all(), .where({ id }).first(), .create(data). The create action returns fail(409, ...) on a duplicate email instead of a 500, the form shows that message or the zod$ field error for the email, and the success message only shows when the action did not fail.
Scripts prisma:emit, prisma:db:init and prisma:db:update. The post-install step is prisma contract emit, which replaces prisma migrate dev --name initial. Creating the table needs a database, so it moved to the Next Steps text.
Dependencies: @prisma/orm-postgres, dotenv and temporal-polyfill (a peer of @prisma/orm-postgres that Yarn would not install on its own) as dependencies, prisma as a dev dependency, all on caret ranges of the current latest tags (prisma at ^8.0.0-rc.30, the first release whose bundled toolchain matches @prisma/orm-postgres rc.22). The Next Steps text says Prisma ORM 8 needs Node.js 22.18+, 24.11+ or 26+, since the base starter still allows Node 18 and 20.
Why the Prisma files live in prisma/ and not src/prisma/
Prisma generates contract.d.ts next to the contract. The starter's npm run build lints src/**/*.ts*, and that generated file fails @typescript-eslint/no-empty-object-type. qwik add cannot merge eslint.config.js, so keeping generated files outside src is the only way the build passes without a manual edit. This matches the Drizzle starter, which keeps its schema in drizzle/.
Database
Any PostgreSQL 15+ connection string in DATABASE_URL works. The Next Steps text and .env.example also mention npx create-db@latest --env .env, which creates a temporary Prisma Postgres database without an account, for people who do not have a database yet.
No change to the v1 branch. The starter imports @qwik.dev/core and @qwik.dev/router, so it only targets Qwik 2.
How I tested it
Built the CLI from this branch (pnpm build.cli) and ran it against a fresh npm create qwik@rc -- empty app (Qwik 2.0.0-rc.4, Node 24.11.1, npm 11.6.2):
qwik add prisma --skipConfirmation=true writes the files, merges package.json, and npm install succeeds with no manual changes.
npm run build passes: tsc, eslint "src/**/*.ts*", client build. npm run build.preview and vite preview serve the routes from the production SSR bundle.
Against a Prisma Postgres database from create-db: npm run prisma:db:init creates the table. Create returns 200 and the user appears in /users and /users/1. A duplicate email returns 409 with "Email already in use". An invalid email returns 400. /users/999 returns 404 with "User not found". Also clicked through the form in Chrome with JavaScript on: success message, then the duplicate message on resubmit.
Adding a bio field, then npm run prisma:emit and npm run prisma:db:update, adds the column and the field shows up in contract.d.ts.
In the repo: pnpm vitest run packages/qwik/src/cli (152 tests) and pnpm eslint starters/features/prisma pass.
While testing I found that qwik add does not wait for an integration's postInstall script: runAddInteractive awaits the { install, abort } object that runInPkg returns instead of the install promise, so the process exits while the script is still running and a failure is never reported. The Prisma starter's postInstall (prisma contract emit) generates the files that prisma/db.ts imports, so without #9371 a fresh qwik add prisma leaves prisma/contract.json missing until the user runs npm run prisma:emit by hand. The same bug affects the Playwright and PandaCSS starters' postInstall today. #9371 is a two-line fix with its own changeset; this PR has no code for it.
Rerun on the released versions (2026-11-03)
The first version of this PR was a draft because prisma@latest (8.0.0-rc.29) could not emit a contract next to @prisma/orm-postgres@latest (8.0.0-rc.22) (prisma/prisma-cli#382, now closed). prisma@8.0.0-rc.30 fixes that. With the CLI built from this branch plus #9371, qwik add prisma --skipConfirmation=true on a new npm create qwik@rc -- empty app installs the published latest versions, emits prisma/contract.json and prisma/contract.d.ts before the CLI exits, and npm run build passes. Against a create-db database: npm run prisma:db:init creates the table, and npm run dev gives 200 on create, 409 on a duplicate email, 400 on an invalid email, 200 on /users and /users/1, 404 on /users/999. Nothing in this PR pins versions.

…greSQL
The qwik add prisma starter installed Prisma ORM 5.3.1 with SQLite and
created a new PrismaClient in every loader and action. It now adds
Prisma ORM 8 with a PostgreSQL contract, one shared database client in
prisma/db.ts, and the three demo routes on the ORM 8 query API. The
post-install step is prisma contract emit, and prisma:db:init and
prisma:db:update scripts apply the contract to the database.
Generated files stay in prisma/ so the starter's lint step does not
pick up the generated contract.d.ts.

Walkthrough
The Prisma starter now uses Prisma ORM 8 with PostgreSQL and a shared database client. Setup instructions and scripts cover database configuration and contract generation. The create and user routes use the shared client; the create route handles duplicate-email errors and displays action feedback.
The starter adds a Prisma 8 User contract and PostgreSQL configuration. It removes the SQLite schema and updates dependencies, database scripts, PostgreSQL setup instructions, and the starter changeset.
The routes use the shared client to create and retrieve users. The create action returns a 409 failure for duplicate emails and rethrows other errors. The form displays failure or success feedback.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 7e73b
Adding the Prisma starter to a selected project subdirectory can leave contract generation unable to find its configuration. Resolve that workflow before merging unless the limitation is explicitly accepted.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 5f953
The database migration warrants design review, but the changed routes preserve their existing inputs and user-data scope. No introduced security bypass was established. PostgreSQL permissions, transport settings, and the new runtime’s failure behavior still depend on deployment configuration and external dependencies.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The directly demonstrated exposure is the generated application's User create, list, and detail functionality against its configured PostgreSQL database. The credential's broader asset scope is unknown. The supplied relationships do not establish propagation into other services.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The demo routes already accepted user creation and displayed user names and emails before this PR. Their route-level authorization structure and returned data scope are not broadened by the inspected changes; the existing demo exposure is not treated as a newly introduced vulnerability.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Client-supplied name and email retain the existing zod validation declaration. Database credentials come from the server environment, not action input. Email uniqueness remains declared in the persistence contract, making the applied database constraint the concurrency control rather than an application-side duplicate pre-check.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Creation remains one database operation without a request replay protocol. An interrupted response after a committed insert can leave a retry facing a duplicate conflict rather than replayed success. That ambiguity predates this PR; database uniqueness contains duplicate rows when the declared constraint has been applied, but does not provide request-level idempotency.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — For production use, separate schema-management authority from the application's restricted database role and explicitly configure protected remote connections. These are deployment hardening proposals, not observed defects in the starter.
