First step towards a changelog per component (as #291 did for rfd and hs485d): every program and library gets a version that its changelog can refer to, and every program shows its version together with the versions of the OpenCCU-Base libraries it uses.

New versions (version.sh, like rfd, hs485d and multimacd)

Component Version Shown by
hss_led / hss_ledctl 2.3.0 (was a hard-coded "2.3" in LedCli.h) --version, -V
ssdpd 1.0.0 new -v, --version (it had no options)
eq3configd, eq3configcmd, hs485dLoader, SetInterfaceClock 1.0.0 new -v, --version; usage text
crypttool 1.0.0 new --version (-v means "validate"); usage text
libhsscomm, libelvutils, libLanDeviceUtils, libUnifiedLanComm, libeq3config 1.0.0 <lib>_version()

The other components keep the versions they already have: MODULE_VERSION of eq3_char_loop (1.6) and bcm2835_raw_uart (1.12), the Tcl package versions of tclrega, tclrpc (1.4) and tcl_homematic (1.0). libXmlRpc (0.12) and libxmlparser (1.14, as @version in xmlParser.h) get their number into a version header (xmlrpc_version.h, xmlparser_version.h); XMLRPC_VERSION is built from it and still reads XMLRPC++ 0.12.

Version output

  • Every library returns its version from extern "C" const char* <lib>_version(), declared in <lib>_version.h (xmlrpc_version, xmlparser_version, hsscomm_version, elvutils_version, landeviceutils_version, unifiedlancomm_version, eq3config_version). A function instead of an exported array keeps a longer version from being cut off by a copy relocation.
  • --version (and -v where the option is free) is handled first in main(): it prints and exits with 0 before any option parsing, socket or RPC call. rfd, hs485d and multimacd get it as well and list it in their usage text.
  • The output lists the OpenCCU-Base libraries whose functions the program calls (checked with nm -D --undefined-only), with the version reported by the loaded library:
$ rfd -v
rfd 2.6.8 (Nov  2 2026)
  libXmlRpc 0.12
  libxmlparser 1.14
  libhsscomm 1.0.0
  libelvutils 1.0.0
  libLanDeviceUtils 1.0.0
  libUnifiedLanComm 1.0.0
Program Libraries shown
rfd, hs485d XmlRpc, xmlparser, hsscomm, elvutils, LanDeviceUtils, UnifiedLanComm
hss_led (with status monitor), SetInterfaceClock XmlRpc, elvutils
multimacd, eq3configd, crypttool, hs485dLoader elvutils
eq3configcmd eq3config
ssdpd, hss_led without status monitor none

Build

  • New CMake function openccu_version_header(<target> <name> <MACRO>) in CMakeLists.txt: generates generated-<name>-version.h from the directory's version.sh (with cmake/WriteVersionHeader.cmake), as rfd, hs485d and multimacd do with their own copy of these lines. Those three are left as they are.
  • hss_led, SetInterfaceClock and hs485dLoader no longer link libraries they do not call: libxmlparser (all three) and libhsscomm (SetInterfaceClock).
  • The shared libraries get no CMake VERSION/SOVERSION, so their SONAMEs stay lib<name>.so. ReGaHss loads libXmlRpc.so and libxmlparser.so by these names.

AGENTS.md and changelogs

  • The rule "Daemon versions" becomes "Component versions": where each component keeps its version, that a user-visible change raises it (a fix the patch level, a new function the minor version), what --version shows, and that a program links only the libraries it calls.
  • src/rfd/CHANGELOG.md and src/hs485d/CHANGELOG.md get an Unreleased entry for -v/--version; their versions are raised in a later collected bump. The changelogs of the other components follow in a separate pull request.

Validation

  • Clean native x86_64 build of all changed programs and libraries plus rfd, hs485d and multimacd (DEPLOY_TO_REPO=OFF): no errors, no warnings. hss_led also built with HSS_LED_STATUS_MONITOR=OFF.
  • --version/-v of all ten programs checked: output as above, exit code 0.
  • readelf -d: hss_led and SetInterfaceClock need only libXmlRpc and libelvutils, hs485dLoader only libelvutils.
  • hss_led tests (HSS_LED_BUILD_TESTS=ON, ctest): 2/2 pass.
  • objdump -p: SONAMEs unchanged; nm -D: each library exports its <lib>_version.
  • Line endings and encodings of the CRLF/Latin-1 files (rfd.cpp, hs485d.cpp, multimacd.cpp, crypttool.cpp, SetInterfaceClock.cpp) preserved.

The programs hss_led, ssdpd, eq3configd, eq3configcmd, crypttool,
SetInterfaceClock and hs485dLoader and the libraries libhsscomm,
libelvutils, libLanDeviceUtils, libUnifiedLanComm and libeq3config get a
version.sh like rfd, hs485d and multimacd: 2.3.0 for hss_led, which had
"2.3" hard-coded, and 1.0.0 for the others. The new CMake function
openccu_version_header() generates the header from it. The programs print
the version with their usage or version option (ssdpd gets -v/--version);
each library exports <LIB>_VERSION_STRING. The SONAMEs stay unchanged.

AGENTS.md now says where every component keeps its version and that a
user-visible change raises it.

Walkthrough

Programs and libraries under src/ now use generated version headers. Programs include version information in their output. Five libraries expose C-linkage functions that return their version strings. Repository guidance describes version sources and versioning rules.

eq3configd, crypttool, hs485dLoader, SetInterfaceClock and eq3configcmd
now handle --version first in main(): it prints the version and exits,
before eq3configd starts its service or SetInterfaceClock takes the
argument as the address of its RPC call.

The libraries export a function <lib>_version() instead of an array, so
an executable cannot keep the array size of an older version through a
copy relocation.

@coderabbitai Thanks for the review. Both points are adopted in b78e064:

  • Version query before daemon startup: eq3configd, crypttool, hs485dLoader, SetInterfaceClock and eq3configcmd now handle --version first in main(): it prints the version and exits with 0, before any option parsing, socket or RPC call. The usage text keeps its version line. All programs now answer --version (ssdpd and hss_led already did).
  • Stable version symbol size: the libraries export an accessor instead of an array, extern "C" const char* <lib>_version() (hsscomm_version, elvutils_version, landeviceutils_version, unifiedlancomm_version, eq3config_version), so no copy relocation can truncate a longer version later.

@jens-maus Thanks for addressing both points in b78e0647.

The changes you describe address both concerns:

  • Early --version handling avoids option parsing and service initialization, then exits with status 0.
  • C-linkage version accessors avoid the copy-relocation size risk of exported version arrays.

If you found this review helpful, would you consider giving us a shout-out on X?

@coderabbitai Thanks for the review.

  • Exact version invocation (ssdpd): adopted in 1c532ed. ssdpd now takes -v/--version only as the single argument, like the other programs.
  • Docstring coverage: left as is. The sources of this repository have no docstring convention, and the touched functions are short main() and usage() paths.

@jens-maus Thanks for the update.

  • The reported change in 1c532edd addresses the ssdpd concern: -v or --version is accepted only as the sole argument.
  • Understood on docstring coverage. I accept leaving it unchanged for these short main() and usage() paths. The saved coverage result is a warning, not a blocking check.
