…full run (copier-base feat/ci-path-classes) Pulled from the base branch at 450438cb (v0.2.0-9-g450438cb) ahead of its merge, so the template-side gating can be built against it; the answers file moves to the release tag once base tags. The forked project CI skeleton was reconstructed by hand: copier rejected the fork's jobs as one 644-line hunk because the new changes job is inserted exactly where the fork's first job begins. The result carries base's three hunks (workflow_dispatch trigger, changes job, status posted to the event's commit) on top of the unchanged fork; nothing else in the file moved. Every job that depends on part of the tree reads the changes job's classes output and skips its steps when that part is untouched, with the job graph left as it is: an untouched class resolves to an empty green job in seconds, so builds still wait on both unit-test jobs and fail fast when either breaks. Jobs that are reusable workflows (the docker-image build variants, the installer) have no caller-side steps and gate at job level instead. - unit-test-frontend, test-compiled-frontend-dev: frontend - unit-test-backend: backend - build-frontend, build-backend, e2e-test, e2e-test-k3d, package-images, package-firmware, build-installer: code - e2e-test-backend, e2e-test-windows-service: code and backend, since they run against a build that only code changes produce The seeded filter file excludes the unit-level test trees from code (nothing built reads them) and adds the frontend, backend and installer classes under the answers that render those parts. Run compiled frontend tests for compiled-test changes.
In a Docker rendering, a compiled-test-only change sets frontend but not code. The job-level conditions skip build-frontend and, when has_backend is enabled, build-backend. test-compiled-frontend-dev then skips because it needs those jobs.
Remove the exclusion:
Allow compiled tests to set code
- - '!frontend/tests/compiled/**'If the exclusion remains, allow every required build job to run when either code or frontend is true:
Allow the required builds for frontend changes
Apply this change to both build-frontend and the Docker build-backend block:
- if: needs.check-skip-duplicate.outputs.should-run == 'true' && fromJSON(needs.changes.outputs.classes).code
+ if: needs.check-skip-duplicate.outputs.should-run == 'true' && (fromJSON(needs.changes.outputs.classes).code || fromJSON(needs.changes.outputs.classes).frontend)🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Builds on LabAutomationAndScreening/copier-base-template#240, which is still open. This branch pulls that PR's branch so the work could proceed in parallel; once base merges and tags, a final
task copier-updatemoves the answers file to the release tag. Until thenconfirm-on-tagged-copier-templateis expected to fail here.Why is this change necessary?
Project CI runs every job on every push, including jobs the change cannot affect: backend unit tests for a frontend-only change, the Windows installer for a docs change, the whole build-and-E2E chain for a unit-test-only change. In one downstream project a pull-request run costs about 46 runner-minutes, two thirds of them on Windows, for 23 minutes of wall time.
How does this change address the issue?
Two commits on top of the base pull (
7e5a9a8be):changesjob (dorny/paths-filter against.github/path-filters.yaml, one JSONclassesoutput), aworkflow_dispatchtrigger that forces a full run, andrequired-checkposted to the event's own commit. The forkedci.yaml.jinjawas rebuilt by hand after copier rejected the fork's jobs as one hunk; the base-side regions were diffed against copier's own output to confirm they match.7161a6c83) makes every job read the class it depends on and skip its steps when that class is untouched, with the job graph left exactly as it is. An untouched class resolves to an empty green job in seconds, so builds still wait on both unit-test jobs and fail fast when either breaks. Reusable-workflow jobs (the docker-image build variants, the installer) have no caller-side steps and gate at job level instead. A skipped job renames itself, e.g.Unit Test Backend (skipped, no backend changes).frontendbackendcodecodeandbackend, since they run against a build that onlycodechanges produceThe seeded filter file excludes the unit-level test trees from
code(nothing built reads them) and addsfrontend,backendandinstallerunder the answers that render those parts. The default branch and manual runs force every class on; a code path no class claims forces every class on too.What side effects does this change have?
Projects receive the gating on their next update. A project that customised the gated jobs will see those hunks conflict and has to hand-merge, as this template did for the base pull. Nothing changes on the default branch, which always runs everything.
How do we know this works?
Projects rendered from this branch with all five
tests/copier_datafiles pass the YAML and GitHub workflow schema checks, carry the expected classes per answers (code/frontendfor the no-backend file, plusbackend, plusinstallerwhen the Windows service is on), and keep every job. The resolve logic was exercised with simulated dorny outputs for docs-only, unit-test-only, class-specific and unclassified changes. In a private downstream project the rendered result was compared semantically (sorted keys) against a hand-reviewed prototype of the same gating and found identical; that project's own branch is where the skipping gets observed on real runs, since this repository's CI only renders projects.Other
