Wire hosted project checks to the native Smol node - #692
Hosted PRE and POST execution now use the existing native Smol node alongside trusted ZIP intake. API and Celery share the intended private sockets, material paths, numeric identities and pinned cache. Docker continues to package/run backend infrastructure and build images; hosted runsc checker execution is removed.
#677 is merged into main and incorporated here; it owns generic Smol model/trial transport. This PR now targets main. Provider selection from #690 is already on main. Startup and shutdown preserve native/proxy/worker dependencies, and only the trusted proxy receives provider credentials. PRE model selectors remain explicitly unsupported.
The live rehearsal exposed one missing bootstrap principal: workstream.artifact.checker_output, needed to retain setup/POST model request and response evidence. The canonical bootstrap now provisions it. PostgreSQL tests with both Local and MinIO storage reproduce the old refusal and prove the public fix, exact replay and evidence binding without changing authorization or accounting owners.
Validation:
Actual hosted API/Celery/Beat/Smol/AWS baseline at 6c483ca61 passed upload/preparation overlap, cancellation/expiry, default and ordered project PRE checks, work versus infrastructure failures, bounded retry, interruption/restart and duplicate delivery. Human policy reached review_pending; automatic policy retained one FinalAcceptance and one ContributionRecord without a fabricated Review.
Live OpenRouter continuation at 5ab96251f passed through the actual Smol guest, trusted proxy and durable worker. Public Operator recovery reused the original prepared effect, paid slot, immutable Submission and account. The real verdict was passed, producing accepted with exactly one FinalAcceptance and one ContributionRecord. Submission replay and two actual duplicate Celery deliveries added no effects.
Locked-rate accounting settled US$0.016527 against the authorized US$10 cap, with zero outstanding reservation. Token arithmetic, private ART request/response bindings and redacted public effect inspection were checked. This is the Workstream ledger charge, not provider-invoice reconciliation; the earlier uncertain setup charge remains separately unresolved.
Both SDK images passed canonical verification. Final shutdown and independent inventory confirmed stopped owned services and empty VM/lease/cgroup/relay/scratch state, preserving history, database and S3 evidence. The root independently rehashed 21 retained artifacts and reconstructed the exact original pre-retry claim hash.
All 35 attachment/model guard tests and both real custody regression variants passed. Native interruption qualification in [PILOT-06] Execute project POST checks with Smol model and trial capabilities #677 also passed all three active nested fault cases. Current head ba48f9251 incorporates main after [PILOT-06] Execute project POST checks with Smol model and trial capabilities #677 and fixes CodeRabbit's asset-diagnostic finding. All 71 hosted configuration/image tests and local gates pass, including a real-file regression that fails on the original handler; independent review passed. The final Backend run 40455857432 passed all 27 jobs, including test. Independently audited fresh artifacts confirm 11,418 unique completions, zero skips/deselections, all 17 database/storage cleanup records and an exact tested/reviewed source tree match. Agent Gates and release image proof also passed. The CodeRabbit finding is fixed, replied to and resolved. This diagnostic-only correction leaves qualified runtime behavior unchanged; no roadmap capability or remaining-gate change is needed.
These are disclosed engineering proofs with simulated RS256 identity and a synthetic single-rubric model submission. Production Flow identity, live setup rehearsal, substantive grading quality and the full Terminal Systems project remain separate. No claim of model-enabled PRE support is made.
Exact source, receipt hashes, failed-attempt history and qualification limits are recorded in .commitrail/changes/hosted-smol-project-execution.md. Human merge is required.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Hosted deployments now use a native Smol node and one private endpoint for trusted file intake and project execution, replacing the Docker/runsc checker-service setup.
A scoped hosted model POST qualification completed with recorded usage and replay protection. This does not qualify production identity or the full project journey.
Improvements
Hosted deployment paths and artifact-preparation deadlines are configurable, with updated native-runtime readiness checks.
Hosted release-image verification supports a backend-only scope.
Documentation
Hosted setup and operations guidance now reflects the native runtime, updated readiness checks, and recovery procedures.
Final base reconciliation: main advanced to f16dfe055 through #693 during the final CI audit. Its CLI presentation changes share only docs/roadmap_status.md with this PR. A clean merge-tree check preserved all 32 other PR files and all 17 other incoming files byte-identically; the roadmap combines both independent updates. The CI result above tested base 6b55fd450 plus head ba48f9251; the newer CLI-only base adds no change to this PR’s executable behavior. No source push or test rerun was needed for that unrelated base delta.

Walkthrough
The pull request replaces hosted Docker/runsc checker execution with a native Smol node for project execution and trusted intake. It adds hosted attachment and bounded model POST qualification tooling, updates deployment validation and release-image evidence, and records the qualification results and remaining limits.
Hosted documentation and example configuration describe a native Smol node for project execution and trusted intake through one private endpoint. The docs specify pinned assets, derived private paths, service identity, and operating requirements.
Smol preflight and readiness deploy/hosted/preflight.py, scripts/test_hosted_release_config.py
Preflight validates derived paths, host custody, pinned Smol assets, delegated cgroups, and typed runtime and intake health. Tests cover configuration, topology, and readiness checks.
Compose topology and operations deploy/hosted/compose*, deploy/hosted/compose.py, scripts/test_hosted_release_config.py
Compose removes the checker controller and derives service paths from the deployment root. The wrapper adds bounded migration and worker start/stop commands, with corresponding topology and operation tests.
The verifier adds native-hosted evidence for backend images without checker-image fields. The existing all-release-images scope retains checker verification.

The attachment validates running service configuration and custody, provisions fixture actors and capabilities, and supports hosted intake, runtime, review, and duplicate-delivery trials. The probe routes hosted runs through the attachment and checks native lease events when trace files are absent.
Model POST qualification experiments/pilot04_external_checker_runtime/public_hosted_model_post.py, scripts/test_public_hosted_model_post.py, backend/scripts/provision_local_service_actors.py, backend/tests/test_checker_output_custody.py
The model qualification driver binds a single public dispatch to a bounded paid effect, checks accounting and custody, and verifies replay invariants. Service-actor provisioning and storage tests cover checker-output evidence custody.
Native node custody and fault trials experiments/pilot04_external_checker_runtime/public_fault_files.py, public_node_faults.py, scripts/test_public_smol_proof.py
Fault tooling adds hosted identity and private control-file checks. Tests cover ownership, modes, links, inode custody, and runtime identity.
Qualification evidence and status .commitrail/changes/hosted-smol-project-execution.md, README.md, docs/roadmap_status.md
The records report hosted baseline and live model POST results, including settled usage and replay checks. They retain the stated qualification limits for production identity, substantive model quality, and the full project journey.
Issue 555 tracks the end-to-end hosted project journey. This PR adds hosted execution and qualification evidence but records that the production Flow identity journey remains incomplete.
Issue 493 covers project POST checks. This PR adds hosted POST model qualification, while project-specific rubrics and isolated execution qualification remain open.
Issue 583 tracks hosted checker runtime and release composition. This PR changes hosted execution from Docker/runsc to the native Smol node.
Issue 582 covers trusted ZIP intake and artifact custody. This PR updates hosted intake and checker-output custody, while the listed live AWS proof remains outstanding.
Issue 576 covers the agreed Terminal Systems journey and checker capabilities. This PR adds hosted PRE/POST execution but records that PRE model selectors remain unsupported.
