feat(build): ✨ declare named build options with scikit-build-core 1.1 - #421
scikit-build-core 1.1 lets a package declare its own config-settings and match overrides on them. Until now an override could only match environment variables, so the MPI switch had to be an environment variable, and the config-settings route had to repeat the mpi4py pin on the command line.
This PR bumps to scikit-build-core>=1.1.0 and declares five named build options. Each one can be set as -C monoprop.<name>=... or through an environment variable named after its CMake option:
Config-setting
Environment variable
Effect
monoprop.mpi
monoprop_ENABLE_MPI
MPI; adds mpi4py to the build requirements; builds into its own Release-mpi tree
monoprop.sanitizer
monoprop_SANITIZER
asan-ubsan / tsan; also selects the AsanUbsan / Tsan build type and tree
monoprop.cxx-unit-tests
monoprop_ENABLE_CXX_UNIT_TESTS
build the C++ suite
monoprop.arch-flags
monoprop_ENABLE_ARCH_FLAGS
architecture-specific flags
monoprop.mpi-test-procs
monoprop_MPI_TEST_PROCS
rank counts for the C++ MPI tests
Existing environment-variable workflows keep working. Unset options pass no define, so CMake's own defaults still apply. A misspelled option is rejected with a suggestion.
These environment variables, plus SKBUILD_BUILD_DIR, SKBUILD_CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE and SKBUILD_CMAKE_DEFINE, are added to tool.uv.cache-keys. uv now rebuilds when you switch variants, without --reinstall-package monoprop --no-cache.
The MPI build gets its own tree because scikit-build-core reconfigures from scratch in every isolated build. With separate trees, ninja reuses each variant's object files. It is a directory suffix rather than a new build type, so CMake's Release flags are kept.
Changes
pyproject.toml:
require scikit-build-core>=1.1.0
declare the options above and forward them to CMake with cmake.define = {config-setting = ...}
add overrides for mpi4py, the MPI build tree and the sanitizer build types
add the variant environment variables to tool.uv.cache-keys
justfile:
build_dir follows monoprop_SANITIZER and monoprop_ENABLE_MPI
test-cpp-mpi always reads the MPI tree
test-mpi points its C++ legs at the MPI tree and passes rank counts through the environment
test-mpi and bench-build-mpi no longer pass --reinstall-package/--no-cache
CI:
the sanitizer jobs set only monoprop_SANITIZER
the other jobs use monoprop_ENABLE_CXX_UNIT_TESTS=OFF instead of SKBUILD_CMAKE_DEFINE
the SonarQube and clang-tidy jobs, which build with MPI, read build/editable/Release-mpi
Nix: the pinned scikit-build-core moves from 1.0.3 to 1.1.0 (1.0.3 can't read the new tables).
CMakePresets.json / .vscode: add the Release-mpi tree.
Docs:
building.mdx: new "Build options" section, including a warning that the environment variable beats -C; the MPI and sanitizer sections are simplified
testing.mdx, README.md and cpp/tests/README.md follow
Not included:#418's tools/container/Dockerfile isn't on main yet. Once both PRs land, it can switch to -C monoprop.mpi=ON -C monoprop.arch-flags=OFF -C monoprop.cxx-unit-tests=OFF. Until then, its current monoprop_ENABLE_MPI / cmake.define.* spelling keeps working.
Testing
On this branch:
just build --group workspace-test, just test-py and just test-cpp: 657 Python and 323 C++ tests pass.
just test-mpi: the MPI tree is used, and 672 Python, 350 serial C++ and the MPI C++ entries pass.
prek run --all-files is clean.
Earlier, on the same changes stacked on feat/hpc-container:
monoprop_SANITIZER=asan-ubsan built into build/editable/AsanUbsan, and just test-cpp-asan passed all 323 tests.
nix build .#monoprop succeeded against scikit-build-core 1.1.0.
Switching between serial and MPI rebuilt each time without extra flags, and has_mpi matched the variant.
After the first build of each tree, a switch took about 110 s instead of about 390 s.

The project now exposes build variants through environment variables and config-settings. Build and test commands use separate MPI and sanitizer build trees. CI workflows and documentation use the updated settings and paths.
Changes: Build Variant Configuration and MPI Workflows
The project adds scikit-build config-settings and cache keys for build variants. MPI and sanitizer mappings are updated, and the minimum scikit-build-core requirement changes to 1.1.0.
Variant build and test trees justfile, CMakePresets.json, .github/workflows/*, .vscode/c_cpp_properties.json
Build and test recipes select variant-specific trees. MPI configure, build, and test presets are added. CI and editor compile-command paths reference the MPI tree where specified.
Build and test instructions README.md, cpp/tests/README.md, docs/content/docs/*
The instructions describe build options, MPI provisioning and build trees, sanitizer selection, and cache behavior. MPI test commands use the separate MPI tree.
MPI test commands can use a stale or missing non-MPI build for supported boolean spellings; normalize these values before relying on that workflow.

scikit-build-core 1.1 lets a package declare its own config-settings and
match overrides on them. Use that to give the source build a documented
interface instead of raw CMake defines:
- monoprop.mpi, monoprop.sanitizer, monoprop.cxx-unit-tests,
monoprop.arch-flags and monoprop.mpi-test-procs, each settable as
`-C monoprop.<name>=...` or through the environment variable named after
the CMake option (which takes precedence). Unset options drop their
define, so CMake's defaults stay authoritative.
- monoprop.mpi provisions mpi4py for both routes; overrides could
previously only match environment variables, so the config-settings
route had to repeat the mpi4py pin.
- The sanitizer option also selects the AsanUbsan/Tsan build type, and MPI
builds use their own Release-mpi tree, so switching variants rebuilds
incrementally instead of reconfiguring a shared tree.
- The variant environment variables join tool.uv.cache-keys, so uv
rebuilds on a switch without --reinstall-package/--no-cache.
The justfile, CI, Nix pin, presets and docs follow.

The persistent build tree keeps the last CMake cache value when a
config-setting is unset and drops its define, so unsetting
cxx-unit-tests, arch-flags or mpi-test-procs did not restore the CMake
default. Give these settings explicit defaults mirroring CMake, so a
define is always passed. arch-flags can default to true because
cmake_dependent_option still forces it off for Debug and sanitizer
builds. The mpi and sanitizer settings select their own build tree and
need no default.
Also add SKBUILD_CMAKE_ARGS to the uv cache keys, so changing it
triggers a rebuild now that the syncs no longer pass --no-cache.

monoprop.mpi accepts Y, T, and positive numbers, but justfile recognizes only on|true|yes|1. With monoprop_ENABLE_MPI=Y, scikit-build-core builds build/editable/Release-mpi, while test-cpp selects build/editable/Release. The test can therefore fail because that tree is absent or run stale non-MPI tests.

Update the truthy-value check used to set mpi_extra in the justfile so it
matches scikit-build-core, including Y, T, and positive numbers; keep the
existing behavior for recognized false values.
