Adomeh: Hippocrates, Galen, Avicenna and Maimonides, the classical physicians read against the body

Adomeh texts

The open English edition of the classical physicians, made better by the people who read it.

This repository holds Adomeh's English translations of Galen and of Avicenna's Canon of Medicine, and Francis Adams's English of Hippocrates, each beside the Greek or Arabic it was read against. Anyone can propose a correction; every accepted one goes into the edition that readers use on adomeh.com, where the texts are set beside a 3D human body.

What is here

Folder Physician English Original
hippocrates/ Hippocrates (c. 460–370 BCE) 17 works in Francis Adams's translation (1849), checked against the printed volumes Greek
galen/ Galen (129–c. 216) 96 works: 95 in Adomeh's English, each read twice against the Greek; On the Natural Faculties in A. J. Brock's English (1916) Greek
avicenna-canon/ Avicenna (980–1037) The Canon of Medicine, all five books, in Adomeh's English, one file per lesson Arabic

Maimonides is next: his Medical Aphorisms is being read from the Gotha manuscript and will join when it is complete.

Each work has its own folder, with the English (eng-…md) and the original (grc-…md for Greek, ara-…md for Arabic) side by side. The English marks the original's sections and pages with small invisible markers such as <!-- page 34 -->, so any sentence can be found in the Greek or Arabic.

How the translations were made

Galen and the Canon were translated from the original by machine, a passage at a time, and then read again against the original passage by passage: negations restored, supplied words removed, terms made consistent with the glossaries, and misprints in the printed text kept and marked "(so printed)" rather than silently corrected. They are a careful reading aid, not yet a critical edition. That is what this repository is for.

Help make them better

  • Found a problem? Suggest a correction. One passage per issue; you do not need to read Greek or Arabic to report a sentence that does not make sense.
  • Want to fix it yourself? Edit the English file and open a pull request. Read the contributor guide first; it is short.

Every pull request is checked automatically to make sure the English still lines up with the original, and every change is reviewed before it is merged.

Licence

The translations are licensed CC BY-SA 4.0, like the texts they are made from: Galen's Greek from Kühn's edition as digitised by the First Thousand Years of Greek project, Hippocrates' Greek from the Perseus Digital Library and First1KGreek, and the Canon's Arabic from the Würzburg Arabic and Latin Corpus (ed. D. N. Hasse). Francis Adams's and A. J. Brock's English are in the public domain. If you reuse the translations, credit "Adomeh" and share your version under the same licence.
