Open, community-made English translations of the classical physicians, read against the body.
Adomeh reads the physicians who built the medicine of fifteen centuries beside the anatomy they describe. The translations are openly licensed and edited in the open: anyone can propose a correction, and every accepted one makes the edition better for everyone who reads it. The atlas that sets them beside a 3D human body is at adomeh.com.
| Physician | What is here | Translated from |
|---|---|---|
| Hippocrates (c. 460–370 BCE) | 17 works in Francis Adams's English (1849), checked against the printed volumes | Greek |
| Galen (129–c. 216) | 96 works: 95 in Adomeh's English, each read twice against the Greek, and On the Natural Faculties in Brock's English | Greek |
| Avicenna (980–1037) | The Canon of Medicine, all five books, in Adomeh's English | Arabic |
The translations began as machine translation from the original texts and were then read against them passage by passage. They are a reading aid, not a critical edition, and they will get better with your help.
Spotted a mistranslation, a dropped negation or a term used inconsistently? Corrections are welcome from anyone who reads Greek or Arabic, and from anyone who notices that a sentence does not make sense. Open an issue with the correction form, or edit the text yourself in Adomeh/texts, where every work sits beside its Greek or Arabic original. The contributor guide is short.
The translations are licensed CC BY-SA 4.0, like the Greek and Arabic texts they are made from: Kühn's Galen as digitised by the First Thousand Years of Greek project, and the Würzburg Arabic and Latin Corpus for the Canon. Adams's and Brock's English are in the public domain.
Adomeh is made by Renaissance ML.
