Summary

Tracking Issue: Epic: Row-oriented scalar functions #9128

Extracts batch setup from #9979 into a private borrowed-input boundary. Input lengths, dtypes, constants, and strict validity are inspected together before attaching the dispatch-selected execution plan.

Targets develop and can merge independently. #10675 and #10676 use the borrowed batch entry point introduced here.

Changes

Keeps constant classification, input ownership, and execution metadata inside the framework. General execution still collects owned inputs and uses the existing dispatch and retry paths. Function IDs are deferred during inspection until an error needs them, with the supporting CachedId inlining change kept here.

The Vortex test suite was not run locally. Focused native measurements of the combined migration were run separately during the compiler investigation.

How to read Verdict and Engines

Verdict: Overall PR-level signal after subtracting baseline drift estimated from Parquet control rows. It can be Likely improvement, Likely regression, or No clear signal.
Engines: Per-engine attribution. DataFusion is compared against DataFusion/Parquet controls; DuckDB is compared against DuckDB/Parquet controls. This answers whether each engine improved or regressed independently.
Confidence: Based on directional consistency, share of rows above the noise floor, and control-run noise.
Hot vs cold: Every measurement is run several times. The first run is reported as the cold run, and the median of the runs after it is reported as the hot run. The verdict and significance use hot runs; each target's geomean reports hot and cold beside each other where the individual runs were recorded and hot alone where they were not, the cold column shows first-run cost per row, and hot/cold is how much of each run the warm path saves. Rows whose results predate per-run reporting show only one value, taken from the value the runner reported.

How to read Verdict and Engines

Verdict: Overall PR-level signal after subtracting baseline drift estimated from Parquet control rows. It can be Likely improvement, Likely regression, or No clear signal.
Engines: Per-engine attribution. DataFusion is compared against DataFusion/Parquet controls; DuckDB is compared against DuckDB/Parquet controls. This answers whether each engine improved or regressed independently.
Confidence: Based on directional consistency, share of rows above the noise floor, and control-run noise.
Hot vs cold: Every measurement is run several times. The first run is reported as the cold run, and the median of the runs after it is reported as the hot run. Verdict: Overall PR-level signal after subtracting baseline drift estimated from Parquet control rows. It can be Likely improvement, Likely regression, or No clear signal.
Engines: Per-engine attribution. DataFusion is compared against DataFusion/Parquet controls; DuckDB is compared against DuckDB/Parquet controls. This answers whether each engine improved or regressed independently.
Confidence: Based on directional consistency, share of rows above the noise floor, and control-run noise.
Hot vs cold: Every measurement is run several times. The first run is reported as the cold run, and the median of the runs after it is reported as the hot run. The verdict and significance use hot runs; each target's geomean reports hot and cold beside each other where the individual runs were recorded and hot alone where they were not, the cold column shows first-run cost per row, and hot/cold is how much of each run the warm path saves. Rows whose results predate per-run reporting show only one value, taken from the value the runner reported.

Closing this performance extraction after the controlled measurements did not establish an independent performance case for the batch-inspection refactor. Its main role in this work was to enable the fused comparison migration, which is now closed in #10676.

The smaller internal candidates in #10741 and #10742 target develop independently and do not require the borrowed batch entry point or inspection types.
