Branded transactional emails with logo, plus welcome email - #140
One shared, email-client-safe layout (table-based, inline CSS, 600px, fluid on mobile, hidden preheader, dark-mode friendly, logo header with text-wordmark fallback, bulletproof button with the full link printed below, footer with the reason for the email) used by every transactional email, in HTML and plain text.
Changed: password reset, invitation (now names organization, inviter, role, expiry), confirm new email, email-changed notice, deletion notices, scheduled reports (content kept). Added: welcome email (async, best effort, once after signup or invitation acceptance, skipped when mail is off). Alert emails stay text-only because users edit their templates.
Also: web/public/email-logo.png served publicly at /email-logo.png (added to the root static allowlist so the SPA fallback no longer answers it with index.html), SMTP parts are now quoted-printable (long HTML lines), preview test (SUPERMETRY_EMAIL_PREVIEW_DIR=/tmp/x go test ./internal/platform/mail -run Preview), docs and changelog.
Verification
gofmt, go vet, race tests for mail/auth/invites/reports/lifecycle/http/web/api pass. Full go test ./... passes except tests that need the git-ignored test/golden/testdata/*.ndjson, which is absent in this worktree. Rendered and inspected at 375/600/700px and dark mode in Chromium; not tested in real mail clients (Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail).
One table-based, inline-styled layout (logo or text wordmark, button with
printed fallback link, footer) with HTML and plain-text output, templates
for password reset, invitation, welcome, email confirmation and email
change, an async welcome sender, a preview test, and quoted-printable SMTP
parts so long HTML lines stay within the SMTP line limit.
Password reset, invitation (names organization, inviter, role, expiry),
email confirmation and change notice, deletion notices and scheduled
reports now share the layout. Send a welcome email in the background after
signup or invitation acceptance.
The change adds branded HTML and plain-text email rendering, builders for transactional email types, and asynchronous welcome emails after signup or new-account invitation acceptance. It also updates SMTP multipart encoding, report emails, email-logo serving, documentation, and tests.
Builders now provide reset, invitation, welcome, and email-change messages. Signup and new-account invitation acceptance send welcome emails asynchronously. Account and lifecycle notifications use the builders. Tests, documentation, and the changelog cover the email changes.
Report emails now use the shared notice layout. The report service receives the configured base URL.
Email logo serving web/serve.go, web/email_logo_test.go, internal/api/ui_test.go
The web server now serves email logos as root-level brand icons. Tests check their response and source files.
Possibly related PRs
velixio/supermetry#133: Both PRs change renderMessage in internal/platform/mail/smtp.go; this PR adds quoted-printable encoding to multipart parts.
Priority: Normal
Merge Risk: Low · up to ce2fa
Some report emails can repeat breakdown text, narrow-screen emails may scroll in clients that strip styles, and parts of the email layout and documentation need correction. The changes remain mergeable with these bounded issues understood and followed up.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to ce2fa
The reviewed changes preserve account and invitation authorization controls while centralizing email rendering. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Background welcome delivery is intentionally best effort; aggregate delivery limits and some transport edge cases remain uncertain.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A rendering or transport defect can affect several email classes within one deployment because account security messages, invitations, reports and lifecycle notices share the layout and sender. Rendering does not itself combine recipients or tenant data across calls.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — User-derived content passes through html/template escaping. New invitation names are normalized and length-limited. SMTP rejects line breaks in recipient addresses and sanitizes subject headers. HTTP(S) validation constrains URL schemes, but trust in the destination authority still rests on deployment configuration.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Each welcome send has a 30-second timeout, and SMTP applies context deadlines to the connection. Signup invokes client rate limiting and its HTTP handler requires open-signup mode. These controls limit individual attempts but do not establish a deployment-wide welcome-delivery concurrency bound.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — If signup volume grows, consider bounded welcome-delivery admission so optional welcome traffic cannot accumulate without limit alongside security-critical mail. This is preventive capacity isolation, not an observed exhaustion finding.

When SMTP is configured, Supermetry sends these emails. Each one is a multipart message (HTML and plain text) built from one shared layout with the Supermetry logo, a button, the link printed in full under it, and a footer saying why you received it.

Qualify the button and link description.
At docs/guide/notifications.md:31, “Each one” includes the email-changed notice, but mail.EmailChanged sets no action. That notice has no button or action link. Say that actionable emails include those elements, and correct the matching claim in CHANGELOG.md:17.

Make the card width fluid without the media query.
At internal/platform/mail/layout.go:86, both width="600" and the inline width:600px keep the card 600px wide when a mail client removes the style block. On a 375px screen, the message then needs horizontal scrolling. Use an inline fluid width with a 600px maximum; retain any client-specific fallback that needs a fixed width.

Extract the text tail without searching breakdown values.
If a page or source value contains Open dashboard:, strings.Index finds that value before the action link. The plain-text report then includes breakdown content where it should append only the link and footer. Build the tail from the action and footer fields, or expose a text-tail helper from mail.Notice. internal/platform/reports/render.go:73-74 and internal/platform/mail/notice.go:36-47 establish the ordering. Scope the button claim to actionable emails.
EmailChanged has no action URL or action label, so it renders without a button or full action link. Change this sentence to state that actionable emails include those elements, while all listed transactional emails share the branded layout and footer. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Increase muted-text contrast in the email layout.
In internal/platform/mail/layout.go:132 and internal/platform/mail/layout.go:142, #6b7280 text on the tinted panel and outer background falls below 4.5:1. The 12–14px labels and delivery reason can be difficult to read. Use a darker muted colour on those backgrounds. (w3.org)
Based on learnings, “when setting a background color for a page or container, verify sufficient contrast with foreground UI elements”.
