Owner

Adds DELETE /api/private/admin/users/{user} (instance admin; session or admin key). Body {"email", "erase_owned_orgs" (default true)}. Email must match (case-insensitive) else 400; 404 unknown; 409 for system users, instance admins, the caller, the last enabled admin, last_owner (when not erasing), and when erasing would remove the only live org. All checks run before any change in one transaction. Sole-owned orgs are erased through the shared erase-now helper and the background job. The account tombstoning is extracted into a function shared with self-service deletion. Response 200 {status:deleted, orgs_erasing:N}. Audited as instance.user.deleted (ids and counts only). Docs and changelog updated.

Walkthrough

The change adds an instance-admin endpoint to delete a user after email confirmation. It handles solely owned organisations, removes account data, ends sessions, records audit metadata, and allows the email address to be used again.

Changes: Admin user deletion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Endpoint contract and documentation
internal/api/openapi.yaml, docs/guide/instance-admin-api.md, CHANGELOG.md
The API specification and guide describe the deletion request, response, refusal cases, and organisation-erasure behaviour. The changelog records the endpoint.
Account and organisation deletion primitives
internal/platform/auth/account.go, internal/platform/http/handlers_admin_erase.go
Account tombstoning is extracted into a reusable function. Organisation erasure is factored into a transaction helper that supports calls without a slug.
Deletion service, routing, and validation
internal/api/router.go, internal/platform/http/private.go, internal/platform/http/handlers_admin_user_delete.go, internal/platform/http/admin_user_delete_test.go
The private route invokes a handler that validates the request and calls the admin deletion service. The service applies deletion rules and records the result. PostgreSQL-backed tests cover successful deletion and refusal cases.

Possibly related PRs

  • velixio/supermetry#136: Adds the organisation-erasure transaction helper used by this endpoint for solely owned organisations.
  • velixio/supermetry#123: Adds storage-usage cleanup to site erasure, which is used when this endpoint queues sites for erasure.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to db9d3

Resolve the ownership race before merging: a concurrent change could cause deletion of a co-owned organization. Correct the erasure timing guidance so administrators are not given an unreliable deadline.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to db9d3

The operation is restricted to instance administrators, but concurrent account deletions can leave a live organization without an owner. Transactional cleanup and audit recording reduce partial-failure risk, but do not prevent that ownership race.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new deletion flow does not serialize removal of co-owners. Two concurrent administrator requests deleting different owners of the same organization can each observe the other owner, exclude the organization from sole-owner handling, and remove both memberships while leaving the organization live. This bypasses both erasure and last_owner refusal, including when erase_owned_orgs is false, and can strand owner-only security administration. Existing self-service deletion locks every owned live organization before recounting owners; the new flow does not preserve that coordination.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Instance-level administrative authority reaches an eligible target account and every organization selected as solely owned by that account. Associated site data can enter replay, analytics-retention, and storage-usage erasure. The operation is not limited to the caller's organization; system users, administrator targets, and the caller are refused.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The retained architecture concern requires privileged deletion requests, or a deletion overlapping an authorized ownership change. Concurrent removal of separate co-owners can leave surviving members and data in a live organization with no owner. This is an ownership-control failure, not evidence of unauthenticated access or privilege escalation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The handler accepts either an authorized non-impersonated administrator session or the configured administrator bearer key acting as its service user. Session mutations pass through CSRF protection. The transaction rechecks active administrator status and confirms the target email before destructive work; the resolved actor is propagated into deletion audits.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Registry refresh publishes a replacement snapshot only after a successful reload, so a failed post-commit invalidation leaves the previous snapshot available. Periodic refresh provides recovery attempts, but persistent reload failure can extend stale visibility. This refresh pattern already exists in organization erasure and is not independently classified as a newly introduced security finding.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Coordinate deletion with the existing organization-locking protocol for all owned live organizations, including initially co-owned ones. Re-evaluate ownership after acquiring those locks before choosing refusal, preservation, or erasure, and validate concurrent deletion and owner-leave interleavings.

- `409` with a detail for: a system user, an instance admin (demote first), your own account, and the last enabled instance admin.
- Organizations where the user is the only owner are erased at once (see "Erase an organization now") when `erase_owned_orgs` is `true`. If one of them is the only live organization of the instance, the whole call is refused with `409` and nothing changes. With `false`, a sole owner of a live organization gets `409 {"error":"last_owner","orgs":[{"id":1,"slug":"acme"}]}` and nothing changes. Organizations with other owners just lose the member.
- The user's sessions end, memberships are removed, and the account is blanked. Invitations the user sent stay with their organization. Its email is replaced by a placeholder, so the same address can sign up again. API keys and share links stay with their organization.
- Answers `200 {"status":"deleted","orgs_erasing":N}`; the N organizations are erased by the background job within about a minute.

Remove the one-minute erasure promise.

For a large organisation or a storage failure, erasure can take longer than a minute. Line 29 already describes both cases. Say that the job runs about once a minute, but completion can take longer. This avoids giving administrators an incorrect data-erasure deadline.

Lock candidate organisations before checking sole ownership.

The sole-owner query at internal/platform/http/handlers_admin_user_delete.go:94-99 does not lock the matching organisation rows. A concurrent role change can add another owner after this query and before eraseOrgNowTx locks the organisation at line 132. The stale candidate list can then erase an organisation that has two owners.

Lock the candidate organisation rows before running the sole-owner query. Existing role-change and invitation-acceptance paths already lock the organisation row first.
