Lnav was written with some very specific goals in mind:

  • Easily deployable – It should be a single executable with as few dependencies as possible. A user should be able to copy a single file to the system being troubleshooted.
  • Text Interface – A text console might be the only interface available for viewing log files.
  • Live and Archived Logs – It should work equally well on a live system as well as archived support logs.
  • Easy Navigation – The user should be able to navigate through files with as few key presses as possible.
