What

There was no direct way to tell whether Laya was actually in effect. The only signal was whether search results happened to carry a semantic_score, and a missing score could mean Laya was disabled, the daemon failed to start, or it was unsupported on the platform.

This PR adds a Laya status to lk stats and the MCP get_stats tool: whether Laya is supported and enabled, and whether its daemon is running.

The check only pings an already-running daemon and never spawns one, so running stats stays fast and does not load the model. daemon: "stopped" is normal while idle — the daemon starts on the next command that needs it.

Changes

  • src/laya.rs:
    • Added status(), which returns supported / enabled / daemon (running or stopped) / model / socket_path, plus daemon_model reported by the daemon's ping when it is running.
    • Added status_line() for the text output of lk stats (e.g. enabled, daemon running (<model>), enabled, daemon stopped (starts on demand), unsupported (macOS Apple Silicon only)).
    • Added unit tests: test_status_does_not_spawn_when_socket_missing and test_status_line.
  • src/mcp.rs: Added a laya field to the get_stats result and mentioned it in the tool description.
  • src/cmd/stats.rs: Added a Laya: line to the text output and a laya field to --json.
  • README.md: Documented how to check the Laya status and the semantic_score field in search results.

Notes

  • With LK_NO_LAYA=1, the output can read disabled, daemon running when a daemon started by another session is still alive. lk does not use it in that case, so the output reflects the actual state.

Tests

  • cargo test: 239 unit / 135 integration passed (1 pre-existing ignored).
  • cargo clippy --all-targets: clean.
  • Checked manually on Apple Silicon: lk stats, lk stats --json, and get_stats via lk mcp all report daemon: "running" with the daemon up.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added Laya status information to statistics output in JSON and human-readable formats.
    • Status includes platform support, enablement, daemon state, configured model, socket path, and running model.
    • Added semantic reranking and duplicate detection status to MCP statistics.
    • Status checks do not start a daemon when none is running.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified Laya status checks, startup behavior, and when semantic_score appears in search results.

Report whether Laya is enabled and whether its daemon is running, so it is
easy to tell if semantic reranking is in effect. The check only pings an
already-running daemon and never spawns one.

Mergeable with a small documentation correction so consumers do not assume every reranked result contains semantic_score.
