What

Integrates laya-mlx — an on-device, low-latency typed decision model runtime running on Apple Silicon (Metal / Neural Engine) — into local-knowledge-cli to provide optional semantic intelligence for duplicate detection, keyword auto-extraction, and search reranking.

This integration is completely opt-in (enabled = false by default), zero-overhead when disabled, and provides transparent fallback to existing trigram FTS5 and BM25 matching when Laya is not running or on non-Apple Silicon platforms.

Key Features

  • Semantic Duplicate Detection: Identifies paraphrased entries describing the same technical knowledge during lk add and flags them under possibly_related (match_reason: "semantic-duplicate") as advisory warnings.
  • Smart Keyword Auto-Extraction: When adding an entry without explicit keywords, extracts Japanese kanji compound words (e.g. 排他制御, 有効期限) alongside ASCII and Katakana, then uses Laya's decision scoring to filter out uninformative terms and retain high-signal domain keywords.
  • Search Result Reranking: Re-scores top FTS5 candidates semantically while strictly preserving current-project (mine) attribution priority.
  • On-Demand Singleton Daemon: Spawns an on-demand Python daemon via Unix Domain Socket (~/.cache/lk/laya.sock) shared across CLI and MCP sessions, with a 10-minute idle auto-shutdown to free memory.

Changes

  • scripts/laya_server.py:
    • Implemented Unix domain socket server with JSON Lines protocol.
    • Added tasks for ping, duplicate, filter_keywords, and rerank using aac6fef/laya-multilingual-mlx.
    • Added idle shutdown timer (default 600s) to automatically terminate and release memory.
  • src/laya.rs:
    • Added LayaClient for UDS communication, on-demand daemon spawning via uv run, socket health checks, and fallback handling.
    • Embedded laya_server.py to auto-extract to ~/.cache/lk/laya_server.py if not found in workspace.
  • src/config.rs:
    • Added LayaConfig struct with enabled = false (opt-in), socket path, idle timeout, and model settings.
    • Supported [laya] section and flat config keys in .knowledge/config.toml and ~/.config/lk/config.toml.
    • Added environment variable overrides: LK_LAYA=1 / LK_NO_LAYA=1.
  • src/keywords.rs:
    • Added kanji compound extraction (KANJI_RE) and general Japanese stopword filtering.
    • Added extract_keywords_auto integrating Laya keyword filtering.
  • src/similarity.rs:
    • Added Reason::SemanticDuplicate.
    • Added refine_similar_with_laya to flag semantic duplicates as Tier::Warn (possibly_related).
  • src/cmd/add.rs:
    • Integrated Laya keyword auto-extraction and duplicate refinement.
  • src/cmd/search.rs & src/mcp.rs:
    • Added semantic reranking for top search candidates.
    • Preserved current-project priority before semantic scores and BM25 scores.
    • Added semantic_score to search output JSON.
  • tests/integration_test.rs:
    • Ensured integration test harness passes LK_NO_LAYA=1 by default to prevent parallel test workers from spawning redundant MLX servers.
  • README.md:
    • Documented features, configuration options, environment variables, and daemon lifecycle.

Tests

  • cargo test: 228 unit / 135 integration (363 passed, 1 pre-existing ignored).
  • cargo clippy --all-targets: clean.
  • cargo fmt --check: clean.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added optional Apple Silicon AI assistance for semantic duplicate detection, keyword extraction, categorization, and search reranking.
    • Search results prioritize current-project entries and may display semantic relevance scores.
    • Automatic keyword extraction supports Japanese kanji compounds and stopword filtering.
    • Duplicate warnings can be refined using semantic similarity without blocking saved entries.
  • Configuration

    • Added global enablement with project-level opt-out, configurable models, thresholds, socket paths, and environment overrides.
    • AI features gracefully fall back when unavailable.
  • Documentation

    • Documented configuration, daemon lifecycle, inactivity shutdown, and fallback behavior.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds opt-in Laya MLX support. A Rust client communicates with a Unix-socket Python daemon for categorization, keyword filtering, duplicate detection, and search reranking. Configuration, entry processing, search output, documentation, and integration-test defaults now support Laya.

In `@scripts/laya_server.py`:
- Around line 238-241: Update handle_client around self.dispatch(req) to execute
dispatch through a dedicated single-worker executor rather than synchronously on
the event-loop thread or via unrestricted asyncio.to_thread. Ensure load_model
initializes self.agent on that same worker so laya-mlx model thread affinity is
preserved, while retaining the existing response-writing and client handling
behavior.

In `@src/cmd/add.rs`:
- Around line 185-192: Move the similarity::refine_similar_with_laya call out of
the write transaction in the add flow: perform the blocking check and insert
before COMMIT, then run semantic refinement after COMMIT and before constructing
possibly_related. Preserve the existing force, candidate, and Laya configuration
behavior.

In `@src/cmd/search.rs`:
- Line 83: Move the LayaClient::connect call into the branch guarded by
!items.is_empty(), so connection and daemon startup occur only when candidates
are available; keep the existing behavior unchanged for empty candidate lists.

In `@src/keywords.rs`:
- Around line 56-59: Update the fallback around the ranked keyword selection to
use the first five Laya-ranked terms rather than heuristic candidates. Preserve
those terms from ranked before it is consumed by the filtering iterator, then
assign the preserved fallback when selected is empty; remove the
candidates-based fallback condition.

In `@src/laya.rs`:
- Around line 350-354: Update locate_or_extract_server_script so it does not
automatically execute scripts/laya_server.py from the current directory; use the
embedded script by default. If retaining development overrides, only accept an
explicitly provided LK_LAYA_SERVER_SCRIPT path before falling back to the
existing cache extraction flow.
- Around line 149-156: Update spawn_daemon to read and parse the pid file before
removing socket_path or pid_path, and check whether the recorded process is
alive. If the pid is alive, return without spawning or deleting either file so a
busy daemon remains reachable; only perform the existing cleanup when the
process is confirmed dead or no valid pid is present.
- Around line 211-235: Update LayaClient::send_request to mark the connection
unusable before returning from any write, flush, read, or response-parse
failure, and reject subsequent requests when that state is set. Add and
initialize the client’s broken-state field in LayaClient::try_connect, while
preserving normal request handling and server-error responses.
- Around line 96-139: Update LayaClient::connect and the shared try_connect
handshake to accept a LayaConfig reference, validate the successful ping
response against both the requested model and idle_timeout, and reject
mismatched daemons. Use the same configuration-aware check when polling after
spawn_daemon, while preserving the existing connection and retry behavior.

- Execute inference and model loading on a single worker thread for MLX thread safety
- Move refine_similar_with_laya outside SQLite write transaction
- Delay LayaClient connection until search results are non-empty
- Use top ranked Laya results when keyword extraction scores are below threshold
- Validate model in ping response and cleanly shut down daemon on mismatch
- Check process liveness before cleaning up socket and pid files in spawn_daemon
- Handle stream buffer corruption and mark client broken on socket errors
- Prioritize embedded script over untrusted local paths unless explicitly configured

Do not allow project configuration to select the Laya endpoint. LayaClient::try_connect connects to the configured Unix socket and checks only the ping response and model. It does not authenticate the peer. A project-controlled laya.enabled and laya.socket_path can therefore route query, title, and content payloads to an attacker-controlled socket. Read these settings only from global user configuration, or require explicit confirmation before applying project overrides.

Resolve configured Laya socket paths before use. Both parsing branches store laya.socket_path with PathBuf::from(value). resolve_socket_path returns configured paths unchanged, and LayaClient::connect passes them to socket connection and daemon startup. Apply the documented resolve_path policy to both branches so values such as ~/.cache/lk/custom.sock resolve against the home directory.
