fix(dedupe): candidates were the type's top-100 by importance, not the same-title rows - #506
modusensus wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
…e same-title rows
`saveWithDedupe` looked up merge targets with
`store.list({ type, limit: 100 })`, whose default order is
`importance DESC, updated_at DESC, id`. That window is "the 100 most
important rows of this type", which has nothing to do with "find the row
with the same title". Once a type held more than 100 rows with importance
above the incoming row's, both the incoming row and its same-title row
fell outside the window, the `find(...)` never matched, and the write
silently took the create branch: no error, no warning, merge semantics
degrading as the library grows. Reported on a 2200-row library where one
type held 1047 rows (180 of them importance=5): writing the same title
twice at importance=3 returned `created`.
Add `store.activeByTypeAndTitle(type, title)` — a directed query on
`type = ? AND TRIM(title) = ?` with the same active-row filter as
`list()`'s defaults (`archived = 0 AND forgotten = 0`). TRIM is required:
`title` is stored verbatim (see `save()`), while the comparison in
`saveWithDedupe` is `m.title.trim()`, so an exact match would miss stored
titles carrying surrounding whitespace and reproduce the same silent
degradation.
The dream and narrative summary branches key on `source` (and `tags[0]`)
rather than title — their dedupe key deliberately excludes the title
because it changes with `memory.language`. Pointing those at same-title
candidates would pin them to a permanent miss, so they keep a
type-scoped candidate set; it is now unbounded instead of capped at 100,
which is what those branches needed all along (they must scan the whole
type to find the same-source row).
Tests in test/dedupe-candidate-window.test.js reproduce the window
overflow, and fail 3/5 on the pre-fix code.

(sqlite.org)

Fixes #505.
What was wrong
saveWithDedupelooked up merge targets withstore.list({ type, limit: 100 }).list's default order isimportance DESC, updated_at DESC, id, so that window is "the 100 most important rows of this type" — which has nothing to do with "find the row with the same title".Once a type held more than 100 rows whose importance exceeded the incoming row's, both the incoming row and its same-title row fell outside the window.
candidates.find(...)never matched, and the write silently took the create branch: no error, no warning, merge semantics degrading as the library grows. The reporter measured this on a ~2200-row library where one type held 1047 rows (180 of them importance=5): writing the same title twice at importance=3 returnedcreated. It affects every caller of this path —
memory_save, standalonePOST /memories, the panel's create, and third-party adapters.The fix
Added
store.activeByTypeAndTitle(type, title), a directed query:Two details that matter:
TRIM(title)is required.titleis stored verbatim (seesave(), which writesmemory.titleas-is), while the comparison insaveWithDedupeism.title.trim() === String(memory.title).trim(). An exacttitle = ?match would miss stored titles carrying surrounding whitespace and reproduce the same silent degradation.LIMIT. Same(type, title)active rows are inherently few; adding a window would reintroduce saveWithDedupe 的候选窗口固定 100 条,库一变大就不再合并(静默降级) #505.archived/forgottenfilters matchlist()'s defaults, so a merge never lands in an archived or forgotten row.One branch keeps a type-scoped set
The dream and narrative
summarybranches key onsource(andtags[0]), not title — their dedupe key deliberately excludes the title because it changes withmemory.language. Pointing those at same-title candidates would pin them to a permanent miss. They therefore keep a type-scoped candidate set, now unbounded instead of capped at 100 — which is what those branches needed all along, since they must scan the whole type to find the same-source row. Summary volume is bounded by its producers (autoDream/generateNarratives), so unbounded is cheap there.Tests
test/dedupe-candidate-window.test.js, five cases:Verified against pre-fix code: 3 of 5 fail (the two that pass are the negative controls, as intended). With the fix: 5/5 pass. Full suite: 2308 tests, 2307 pass, 1 skipped, 0 fail.
On
_mergeIntoKept as-is. It is what lets the reporter's bridge work around this on its own write path, and it now has a passing regression test guarding the merge branch it feeds. Worth documenting explicitly, as they suggest — happy to add that in a follow-up if you want it in the same PR.
