The path names the cache directory, not a bundle. ExecuTorch option strings
have a 255-byte limit.

`coreai_compute_unit` selects the Core AI specialization options. Each value is
one configuration the SDK provides:

| Value | Core AI `SpecializationOptions` | Allowed compute units |
|---|---|---|
| `default` (or absent) | `.default` | CPU, GPU, Neural Engine |
| `cpu_only` | `.cpuOnly` | CPU |
| `prefer_cpu` | `init(preferredComputeUnitKind: .cpu)` | CPU, GPU, Neural Engine |
| `prefer_gpu` | `init(preferredComputeUnitKind: .gpu)` | CPU, GPU, Neural Engine |
| `prefer_neural_engine` | `init(preferredComputeUnitKind: .neuralEngine)` | CPU, GPU, Neural Engine |

`cpu_only` is the only restriction: a preference maximizes use of that unit but
falls back to any allowed unit for operations it cannot run. The SDK has no
other combinations, such as CPU and Neural Engine only. Unknown values fail
initialization with `InvalidArgument`. The selection is part of the cache key,
so each value is specialized and cached separately; clearing a PTE removes every
variant.

```cpp
BackendOptions<2> options;
ET_CHECK_OK_OR_RETURN_ERROR(options.set_option("coreai_compute_unit", "cpu_only"));
With the module extension and portable operators enabled, `coreai_multithread_test`
runs a real multi-delegate FP16 model through independently owned Modules. Workers
start loading together and immediately execute after their own load, allowing
loading, inference, and teardown to overlap. Every inference checks output shape,
dtype, finite values, and numerical agreement. Cold and warm rounds share one
isolated test cache; cleanup happens only after all workers have joined. CTest
bounds the whole process with a timeout.
The default is a small smoke run. CI uses the following stress size:
```bash
COREAI_STRESS_THREADS=50 COREAI_STRESS_ITERATIONS=100 \
ctest --test-dir <build-dir>/backends/apple/coreai \
-R '^coreai_multithread_test$' --output-on-failure --no-tests=error
```
For a compile-only production smoke build, use a fresh build directory without
`EXECUTORCH_BUILD_TESTS`, set `CMAKE_OSX_ARCHITECTURES=arm64`, and build
`coreai_runtime_smoke`. For iOS also set `CMAKE_SYSTEM_NAME=iOS` and
`CMAKE_OSX_SYSROOT=iphoneos`. Do not run the iOS binary on the host or install
a simulator as part of this build.
## Shared Backend Suite
The shared model/operator suite has five CoreAI flows: `coreai_fp32`,
`coreai_fp16`, `coreai_w8a8`, `coreai_w8`, and `coreai_w4`. The last two use
weight-only quantization. Weightless operator cases still exercise delegation
but do not demonstrate weight quantization. Reports distinguish delegated and
undelegated cases; a portable fallback is not evidence of CoreAI execution.
Build the Python runtime with CoreAI enabled before running these flows on macOS
27. A normal Python installation without the delegate cannot execute their PTEs:
```bash
CMAKE_GENERATOR=Ninja \
CMAKE_ARGS="-DEXECUTORCH_BUILD_COREAI=ON -DEXECUTORCH_BUILD_COREML=OFF -DEXECUTORCH_BUILD_MLX=OFF -DCMAKE_OSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET=27.0" \
python install_executorch.py --editable
python -m pip install -r backends/apple/coreai/requirements.txt \
pytest-xdist pytest-json-report pytest-timeout
COREAI_TEST_RUNTIME=1 python -m pytest backends/apple/coreai/test/test_tester.py -x
python -m pytest -c /dev/null backends/test/suite/operators/ \
-m flow_coreai_fp32 -x --json-report --json-report-file=coreai-results.json
```
Use `models` in place of `operators` for the model suite, and select another flow
with its `flow_` marker. The CoreAI serialized stage passes an isolated cache root
through per-program backend options, not global options. Set
`GOLDEN_ARTIFACTS_DIR` to preserve the shared suite's PTE and reference artifacts.
CI runs each suite/flow pair with bounded parallelism and propagates test failures
without a failure allowance.
