fix: make every starter query its database on first run - #136
Fixes the starter issues from a hands-on Hono + Prisma Postgres + Compute write-up, plus three template breaks found while running every template for real.
What was wrong
/users broke with DRIVER.ALREADY_CONNECTED (all templates). seed.ts called db.connect() on a client that already connects on its first query, so once any other route had queried, /users failed and stayed broken until a restart. Reproduced locally: POST /users → 201, then GET /users → 500 every time. The Postgres and Mongo runtimes and Composer's client all connect lazily, so the starters drop connectDatabase() rather than guard it.
The 500 said "Run contract:emit and apply your schema" whatever the cause. Every starter now logs the failure; API starters (Hono, Elysia, Nuxt API) return a fixed "Check the server log" message without database details, and pages point at the server log first, keeping the schema hint as one possible cause.
SvelteKit returned 500 on both providers (exports is not defined). ssr.noExternal: true forced the CommonJS pg/mongodb drivers through Vite's ESM dev runner. Removed; Composer now traces runtime deps with dependencies: "external", as it documents for framework outputs.
Astro crash-looped on Compute (Cannot find package 'devalue', 502). Its Node adapter leaves packages in node_modules, but the deploy shipped only dist/. Now dependencies: "external" too.
Next.js + Mongo returned 500 (Mongo URL must be a valid URL). The underlying error is ConnectionString is not a constructor: Turbopack's ESM interop breaks mongodb-connection-string-url. @prisma/orm-mongo is now in serverExternalPackages (Mongo only).
Verification
Every template × Postgres/Mongo (20 projects) scaffolded from this branch, schema applied with db:init, run with npm run dev, and /users (or the page) fetched twice against real Postgres 18 / Mongo 7: 20/20 pass. On main, Svelte (both providers) and Next + Mongo fail.
Failure path, Hono and Next.js against an unreachable database: fixed message in the response, no host/port/user in it, full error in the server log.
Deployed with create-prisma --deploy to real Compute + Prisma Postgres: all 10 templates serve seeded users live (Astro after its fix; it returned 502 before).
The original repro on Compute: redeploy, POST /users → 201, then GET /users → 200, 200.
First-run auth: fresh HOME, no token → "Sign in to Prisma to deploy" → browser login → "Prisma 8 app deployed." Also deployed with PRISMA_SERVICE_TOKEN only.
bun run check, typecheck, test:unit (108 pass), test:e2e (12 pass).
Not in this PR
npm audit shows 14 findings in a fresh project. They all come from alchemy@2.0.0-beta.83 pinning @prisma/dev ^0.20.0 (a nested old copy). Fixing upstream in alchemy, not with an override here.
The seed called db.connect() on top of a client that already connects on
its first query. Once any other route had queried, that connect() threw
DRIVER.ALREADY_CONNECTED and /users stayed broken until a restart. The
Postgres and Mongo runtimes and Composer's client all connect lazily, so
the starters drop connectDatabase() instead of guarding it.
/users also hid every failure behind "Run contract:emit and apply your
schema", sending people the wrong way. API starters now return the real
error and pages point at the server log first.
Running every template against real databases found two more breaks:
- SvelteKit returned 500 on both providers ("exports is not defined"):
ssr.noExternal forced the CommonJS pg and mongodb drivers through Vite's
ESM dev runner. The build stays external and Composer traces runtime
dependencies with dependencies: "external", as it does for Astro.
- Next.js with Mongo returned 500: Turbopack's interop breaks
mongodb-connection-string-url, so @prisma/orm-mongo is now a server
external package.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Generated apps now log user-query errors and provide clearer guidance, suggesting schema setup steps only when needed.
Generated user-query endpoints provide clearer failure messages and handle different error types.
Compatibility
Updated generated build configurations for Next.js, Svelte, and Astro, including external dependency settings.
Database
Generated seed workflows no longer use the previous explicit connection helper.
Tests
Updated generated-template checks for the revised database and build configurations.
Walkthrough
Generated templates update query-failure handling and user-facing error messages. The shared Prisma seed template no longer calls connectDatabase, and the helper is removed. Svelte and Astro service configurations externalize dependencies, and the Svelte Vite configuration omits ssr.noExternal. The Next.js template adds a typed standalone configuration with conditional externalization for Mongo. Installation tests update their template assertions.
Priority: Normal
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 90f2f
The generated starters preserve query diagnostics without exposing database details, and the reviewed seed and framework configuration changes have no established merge-blocking defect.

Astro's Node adapter leaves packages in node_modules, but the deploy copied only dist/, so the app crash-looped on Compute with "Cannot find package 'devalue'" and served 502. Composer now traces the entry's dependencies with dependencies: "external", as for SvelteKit.

Pages pointed people at the server log but caught the error without logging it, and the API starters returned the raw database message, which can carry host, port and user names. Every starter now logs the failure, and the API starters return a fixed message.
