Problem or use case

I want a more flexible view now that we can have inside a thread view sub agent tabs/diffs/file/terminal, the current view limits you to only either thread + one of the options of the right sidepane.

I wanted a view that could combine panes, by spliting veritcally or horizontally like vscode view managment.

I would be happy aswell with a smaller change on maximize mode to just add the chat thread and not have the full tab managment changes:

I have a working version of both of these locally so if interested I could create prs for these, lmk if not we can close the issues if its not of big interest.

Proposed solution

Each thread creation will automatically have a tab uptop showing the thread information. This tab will be mandatory meaning cannot be closed.

When creating a new tab you can either create one uptop by clicking plus icon, or clicking the split right view which will auto split

Now the fun part, with any of these tabs you create you have the ability to drag and drop to any placement in the ui to create your desired ui per thread:

Or the other option instead of drag and drop you can right click on the panes you can replicate the same actions through the menu view instead.

Last is any pane group you create you have the option to maximize, which I feel like it substitutes the old flow of toggling the right side pane and maximizing it for full diff view (This flow works aswell by whichever tab you are focused on you can press keyboard shortcut to maximize or reminimize cmd+shift+enter):

By mouse click:

One more change is I rethought how we should handle the old terminal panel which was opened from below now it's not scoped to the chat thread but global thread view instead since it didnt make senes with this new panel flow, similar to vscode:

There is space in my opinion in this new flow for a right panel sidebar but should behave more like a sidebar then a pane:
[tabs]
[right sidebar] pane managment [left sidebar]
[bottom panelbar]

Why this matters

With these changes we allow users to create the views they like and allow for more information from a glance, you can view diffs, chat working and sub-agents at the same time.

Smallest useful scope

For me it started fairly simple, I wanted when maximizing a diff the ability to swap tabs to the chat thread uptop instead of having to minimize the pane to view the thread again.

Current view:

Changed version with ability to swap to chat thread tab on maximize mode:
