Export Commander command definitions as a versioned docs-reference.json release artifact, including inherited flags, arguments, aliases, defaults, and help. The exporter builds metadata without parsing arguments or executing command handlers.

The release-follow-up workflow checks out the exact published revision, verifies npm publication, attaches the artifact, and uses a GitHub App dispatch to request a reviewed docs update. Manual backfill accepts an existing published tag; missing or draft releases fail. No product release is created by this PR.

Validation: bun run check passed type checking, 109 tests, the snapshot, and the build. Export tests verify deterministic metadata and that handlers are never invoked. Part of the native Mintlify migration; requires the existing docs App credentials.

Part of ENG-3515.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Release documentation now includes a generated CLI reference, making command arguments and options available alongside published releases.
    • The reference can also be generated manually and shared with the documentation site for review.
  • Tests
    • Added checks for command-reference metadata, including inherited options and consistent output.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The CLI now exports command-reference metadata as JSON. A release workflow generates the artifact for a released revision, uploads it to the GitHub release, and dispatches an update event to the documentation repository.

Changes

Command reference export

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build and verify the command reference
scripts/export-docs.ts, scripts/export-docs.test.ts, package.json, .gitignore
The exporter collects command paths, descriptions, aliases, arguments, and options, then writes a versioned JSON artifact. Tests check metadata contents and deterministic output. The package script runs the exporter, and .gitignore excludes the generated artifacts directory.

Release documentation workflow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Generate and publish release documentation
.github/workflows/docs-reference.yml
The workflow resolves a release tag and commit, runs the exporter against the released code, checks the npm package version, uploads the artifact to the release, and dispatches a reference-release event to the documentation repository.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to df72c

The new docs-reference release workflow installs and runs project dependencies while holding repository write access and docs-repository credentials. Separating the build from the privileged upload and dispatch steps is advisable before merging. Generated reference data can also list duplicate options for some nested commands.

Use Bun’s file-writing API for the artifact.

Replace writeFile with Bun.write and retain directory creation. As per coding guidelines, “Prefer Bun.file over node:fs's readFile/writeFile for file operations.”
