Problem

  • A Bun Worker that ran a large Wasm module (QuickJS, about 1 MB) and is then terminated leaves one "Wasm Worklist Helper Thread" at 100% CPU for about 50 s, and the process cannot exit until then. The same happens when the Worker exits on its own.
  • Wasm::Worklist::stopAllPlansForContext (WasmWorklist.cpp:214) fails a plan that a compiler thread is already running (Plan::fail via tryRemoveContextAndCancelIfLast) and then waits for that thread. Nothing in OMGPlan::work, parseAndCompileOMG or B3 reads that state, so the OMG tier-up of one function (53.6 s of B3 and Air in a release build, 36.9 s of it in one UnifiedTmpLiveness fixpoint) runs to the end while VM::~VM waits on it.

Fix

  • Plan::fail sets an atomic flag. The plan passes a pointer to it through Wasm::CompilationContext to B3::Procedure::setCancellationFlag. Air::Code, the Air liveness adapters and the B3 SSACalculator adapter read it through the Procedure.
  • The pipeline polls the flag (one relaxed load each) between the steps of parseAndCompileOMG, the phases of B3::generateToAir and Air::prepareForGeneration and the steps of the greedy register allocator, and inside the loops that can run for seconds on a giant function: WTF::Liveness, SSACalculator::computePhis, the greedy allocator's queue, the stack allocator's interference build, fixObviousSpills, both dead code fixpoints, CSE, reduceStrength, lowerToAir and the B3 validator. Each check sits where the IR is valid or not yet mutated. After a cancelled step, parseAndCompileOMG returns an error and never runs generate. OMGPlan, OSREntryPlan and BBQPlan also check the flag before they start.
  • Correct because a failed plan is complete: its completion tasks already ran (none for a cancelled plan), so no one can install or observe the code. stopAllPlansForContext keeps its wait, which now ends at the next check.
  • Verified with the Bun side (pin of this preview build, oven-sh/bun PR linked from the issue): the reporter's QuickJS repro on a debug build shows no running compiler thread after the four terminate() calls and the process exits, also with wasmOMGOptimizationLevel=0 and =1. A regression test terminates a Worker right after JSC logs triggerOMGReplacement for a synthetic function whose OMG compile takes 17 s in release; the process exits within 8 s in a debug build, and on the old pin it does not exit within 10 s. clang -fsyntax-only on every touched file.

Background

  • A Wasm tier-up (OMGPlan) compiles one function on a worklist thread and installs it into the module's CalleeGroup. The plan does not hold the VM: the VM only appears as the owner of a completion task, which stopAllPlansForContext removes when the VM dies.
  • B3 runs its phases in sequence (generateToAir, then Air::prepareForGeneration). Each phase leaves the IR valid, so a check between phases is safe. The long phases on a giant function are liveness and the register and stack allocators, which are worklist fixpoints. A check per worklist pop makes the cancel latency a few milliseconds there. In a build with ASSERT_ENABLED the B3 validator runs on every generateToAir (54 s on this function in Bun's debug build), so it polls too.
  • BUN_JSC_maximumOMGCandidateCost=<N> with N below the function's size is a function-targeted mitigation: it keeps OMG for the other functions but avoids the compile instead of cancelling it. A terminated Worker mid-compile of any function under the cap still spins without this change.
  • Considered on the Bun side: return from ~VM without the wait, or drop the worker's keep-alive on the parent loop earlier. Both let the process exit and leave the thread spinning for the full compile. Skipping the wait is also unsafe: installOptimizedCallee and releaseBBQCallee walk live VMs.
  • DFG and FTL plans are not changed: a Procedure without a flag behaves as before. The JS twin of this wait (JITWorklist::cancelAllPlansForVM waits for a compiling plan, 13 to 15 s for one FTL compile of a large function, mostly in DFG phases) is Bun slower with a different behavior than Node - vitest run takes more time because worker teardown waits for queued JIT plans bun#46396. Its fix is a safepoint cancel in JITWorklist like removeDeadPlans, plus this Procedure flag for the B3 tail.

Downsides

  • A compile cancelled late still finishes its current step. The residual is bounded by the longest step without an inner check: in a release build under 1 s on the QuickJS function (fixSSA 0.4 s is the largest), in Bun's debug build fixSSA: convert at 20 s.
  • The checks add one relaxed atomic load per phase, per worklist pop in liveness and the allocators, per block in reduceStrength, lowerToAir, CSE and the validator, and per variable in computePhis. A/B on the debug builds of the base pin and this pin, full OMG compile of a synthetic function (1500 locals, 800-way br_table, two runs each): base 132.7 s and 121.2 s, this change 125.8 s and 127.1 s. The difference is inside the 11 s run-to-run spread. The QuickJS function itself takes over 28 minutes per compile in a debug build, too long for an A/B here.

Walkthrough

Wasm plans now expose cancellation state and pass it into B3 procedures. B3 and Air compilation stages check for cancellation at phase boundaries and during selected fixpoint, liveness, lowering, and allocation loops. Wasm compilation returns a cancellation error after B3 preparation detects cancellation.

Possibly related issues

  • Issue 46669 in oven-sh/bun reports a Wasm OMG compiler thread continuing at full CPU after Worker termination; this change adds cancellation checks to Wasm OMG compilation.
  • Issue 46396 in oven-sh/bun concerns Worker shutdown waiting for JIT compilation; this change covers Wasm OMG plans, while the issue summary notes that the DFG plan path may remain separate.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Low · up to 260a1

The change lets a cancelled Wasm tier-up compile stop early. One spot still does a small amount of extra work after cancellation, so a cancelled compile may exit slightly later than intended. This is a minor follow-up and not a correctness risk.

Explanation

The description is detailed and directly addresses the cancellation problem, implementation, correctness, testing, performance impact, and scope. It does not follow the repository template exactly because it lacks a WebKit Bugzilla URL, the standard review line, and the explicit changed-file/function list, but the required change rationale and validation details are present.

Return early when dead-code elimination reports cancellation.

eliminateDeadCodeImpl returns false when the compile is cancelled, which looks the same as "no change." run() then continues into reduceAllBlocksStrength() and simplifyCFG() before it checks cancellation again. Returning right after the call skips that remaining work. The added delay is bounded, but the early return is a simple way to keep cancelled compiles from doing unnecessary work.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked two of the mid-phase bail-outs for IR corruption and ruled them out: the B3ReduceStrength walk skips per-block reductions after a cancel but each block's reduction is independent and the walk still runs its end-of-block bookkeeping, so the remaining passes see a valid graph; and the half-built Air::Code left by B3LowerToAir's early return is never read, because generateToAir checks the flag immediately after lowerToAir and parseAndCompileOMG returns an error before B3::generate.

Extended reasoning...

The change adds a cooperative cancellation flag threaded from Wasm::Plan through CompilationContext into B3::Procedure, with polls between B3/Air phases and inside the liveness, register-allocation, stack-allocation and dead-code fixpoints. It touches no auth, injection or data-exposure surface, but it is a 21-file change to the JIT compiler pipeline with several confirmed findings posted inline (a shared-Module tier-up status leak, a debug-only liveness assertion in the greedy allocator's validation path, an ordering gap between m_cancelled and m_completed, and no poll during parsing), so a human review is needed regardless of this note.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🔴 Source/JavaScriptCore/wasm/WasmOMGPlan.cpp — If a Wasm::Module is shared by a second VM, that VM loses the OMG tier-up of a function whose compile was cancelled when the first VM died. The abandoned OMGPlan returns through WasmOMGPlan.cpp:145-149 and never resets the function's TierUpCount status from StartCompilation, and WasmOperations.cpp:691-693 then defers every later trigger forever. On the base branch the cancelled compile ran to the end and installed the callee into the shared CalleeGroup, marking it Compiled. Fix: when a plan is abandoned by cancellation (OMGPlan and OSREntryPlan, WasmOSREntryPlan.cpp), reset the OMG and OSR-entry compilation status to NotCompiled so a surviving VM can retrigger; the PR says nobody can observe the code, which does not hold for a shared module. [also at: Source/JavaScriptCore/wasm/WasmOMGPlan.cpp:128 - When a Wasm Module is shared by more than one VM, a dying worker now permanently loses the OMG tier-up of a function for the surviving VMs.; Source/JavaScriptCore/wasm/WasmBBQPlan.cpp:94 - Survivor VMs sharing a Wasm::Module lose the BBQ tier-up of a function whose BBQPlan another VM's teardown cancelled.; +1 more]

    Why this was flagged

A WebAssembly.Module is instantiated in two VMs; both instances share one Wasm::Module and its CalleeGroup. The Worker's instance triggers tier-up: WasmOperations.cpp:696 sets the function's status to StartCompilation and WasmOperations.cpp:709 creates an OMGPlan whose only completion task belongs to the Worker's VM. The Worker is terminated; stopAllPlansForContext runs tryRemoveContextAndCancelIfLast, which calls fail() at WasmPlan.cpp:112, and WasmPlan.cpp:127 now sets m_cancelled. On the compile thread parseAndCompileOMG bails at WasmOMGIRGenerator.cpp:7173-7174 and OMGPlan::work returns at WasmOMGPlan.cpp:148, skipping the install at WasmOMGPlan.cpp:190 and the setCompilationStatusForOMG(Compiled) at WasmOMGPlan.cpp:195. The status stays StartCompilation; every later trigger from the main thread's instance hits WasmOperations.cpp:691-693 and only defers. On the base branch nothing read the cancelled state, so the compile finished, installed into the shared CalleeGroup and set Compiled, and the surviving VM got the optimized code.

Verification: OMGPlan::work() then returns at WasmOMGPlan.cpp:127-128 or at WasmOMGPlan.cpp:145-149. Neither path touches the TierUpCount. Every later trigger from the surviving VM hits WasmOperations.cpp:691-693, so the function never gets an OMG replacement in that VM. On the base branch, the in-flight plan ran to the end and set Compiled, so the shared CalleeGroup did get the OMG code.

  • 🔴 Source/JavaScriptCore/b3/air/AirAllocateRegistersByGreedy.cpp — Debug builds crash the Wasm compiler thread when a tier-up is cancelled during the greedy allocator's validation liveness passes. validateCoalescing builds TmpLiveness at AirAllocateRegistersByGreedy.cpp:2135 after the last cancel check; compute() bails, m_computed stays false, and LocalCalc trips ASSERT(m_computed) at Liveness.h:174. airValidateGreedRegAlloc defaults to ASSERT_ENABLED, so every debug build runs it. Fix: return on m_code.hasBeenCancelled() right after each cancellable WTF::Liveness is built, before its sets are read, which covers the 3 sites listed. Same pattern at 3 sites (AirAllocateRegistersByGreedy.cpp:2135, AirAllocateRegistersByGreedy.cpp:1330, AirAllocateRegistersAndStackAndGenerateCode.cpp:510). [also at: Source/JavaScriptCore/b3/air/AirGenerate.cpp:124 - Debug and assertion builds crash the Wasm compiler thread when a tier-up is cancelled during an Air liveness pass that has no cancel check after it.; Source/JavaScriptCore/b3/air/AirAllocateRegistersAndStackAndGenerateCode.cpp:531 - Developers on a debug build with wasmOMGOptimizationLevel=0 get an assertion crash on a cancelled OMG compile instead of the quiet early exit.]

    Why this was flagged

A Worker is terminated while its OMG tier-up is in the greedy allocator between the check at AirAllocateRegistersByGreedy.cpp:954 and the end of coalesceTmps at :961; stopAllPlansForContext (WasmWorklist.cpp:211) calls Plan::fail, which sets m_cancelled (WasmPlan.cpp:127). coalesceTmps calls validateCoalescing (AirAllocateRegistersByGreedy.cpp:2021), gated only by Options::airValidateGreedRegAlloc, whose default is ASSERT_ENABLED (OptionsList.h:593). It constructs TmpLiveness at :2135; TmpLivenessAdapter inherits hasBeenCancelled from LivenessAdapter (AirLivenessAdapter.h:81), so compute() returns at Liveness.h:518 or :574 without reaching m_computed = true (Liveness.h:614). The LocalCalc at :2137 calls copyLiveAtTailInto, which asserts m_computed at Liveness.h:174 and crashes the thread. On the base branch compute() always finishes and the validators pass. validateAssignments (:1330, reached via :977 after the check at :972 and insertFixupCode) fails the same way.

Verification: validateCoalescing constructs TmpLiveness<bank> liveness(m_code); at AirAllocateRegistersByGreedy.cpp:2135. TmpLivenessAdapter inherits hasBeenCancelled() from LivenessAdapter (AirLivenessAdapter.h:81), so computeDense returns early at Liveness.h:518-519 before m_computed = true (:614). Right after, :2137 constructs LocalCalc localCalc(liveness, block), which does ASSERT(m_computed) (Liveness.h:174).

🟡 (optional) Debug builds can hit the ASSERT at WasmWorklist.cpp:118 when a tier-up is cancelled just as its work() begins. Plan::fail stores m_cancelled at WasmPlan.cpp:127 before complete() sets m_completed, with no ordering between them. The new early return in OMGPlan::work at WasmOMGPlan.cpp:127 takes no lock, so the worklist thread can then see hasWork() still true. Fix: let a work() that returns on the flag observe completion, e.g. store m_cancelled after complete() with release and load with acquire at the entry checks, or take m_lock there. Same pattern at 3 sites (WasmOMGPlan.cpp:127, WasmOSREntryPlan.cpp:99, WasmBBQPlan.cpp:93).

Why this was flagged

A VM is torn down while a Wasm worklist thread has just dequeued an OMGPlan, OSREntryPlan or BBQPlan and is entering its work(); VM::~VM calls Worklist::stopAllPlansForContext (WasmWorklist.cpp:211), which calls Plan::fail under the plan's m_lock. Plan::fail at WasmPlan.cpp:127 does m_cancelled.store(true, std::memory_order_relaxed) and only afterwards calls complete(), which writes the plain bool m_completed = true (WasmOMGPlan.h:61). The hasBeenCancelled() check at WasmOMGPlan.cpp:127 (also WasmOSREntryPlan.cpp:99, WasmBBQPlan.cpp:93) is a relaxed load with no lock, so it can observe m_cancelled == true while m_completed is still false. work() returns at once and Worklist::Thread::work at WasmWorklist.cpp:118 evaluates ASSERT(!plan->hasWork() || plan->multiThreaded()) lock-free; hasWork() is !m_completed and multiThreaded() is false for these plans, so the assertion fails and the debug process aborts. On the base branch every path out of work() wrote m_completed on the compiler thread itself under m_lock before returning, so the assertion could not fire; release builds are unaffected. The lock in tryRemoveContextAndCancelIfLast does not help because the work() entry check never acquires m_lock.

Verification: Plan::fail at /home/claude/webkit/Source/JavaScriptCore/wasm/WasmPlan.cpp:127-128 does m_cancelled.store(true, std::memory_order_relaxed); complete();, and complete() only afterwards writes the plain bool m_completed = true. The new early return at WasmOMGPlan.cpp:127-128 takes no lock, so the worklist thread then evaluates ASSERT(!plan->hasWork() || plan->multiThreaded()) at WasmWorklist.cpp:118 with hasWork() = !m_completed read without the plan lock, so the assertion fires.

Comment thread Source/JavaScriptCore/wasm/WasmOMGIRGenerator.cpp
…point check

Wasm::Worklist::stopAllPlansForContext marks a plan that a compiler
thread is already running as failed, then waits for that thread. The
compile never read that state, so an OMG tier-up of a large function
ran to the end (tens of seconds for QuickJS) after the VM that asked
for it was gone. VM::~VM waited in stopAllPlansForContext for that
long, one compiler thread per VM spun at 100% CPU, and a process whose
Worker had been terminated could not exit.

Plan::fail now sets an atomic flag, and the plan hands a pointer to it
to B3::Procedure through Wasm::CompilationContext. The pipeline polls
the flag between the steps of parseAndCompileOMG, the phases of
B3::generateToAir and Air::prepareForGeneration and the steps of the
greedy register allocator, and inside the loops of WTF::Liveness,
WTF::SSACalculator::computePhis, the greedy allocator, the stack
allocator's interference build, fixObviousSpills, the dead code
fixpoints, CSE, reduceStrength, lowerToAir and the B3 validator, where
a single step can run for tens of seconds on a giant function. Each
check is one relaxed load. Once the flag reads true the phases return, the Procedure
holds partial IR, and parseAndCompileOMG returns an error instead of
generating code from it. OMGPlan, OSREntryPlan and BBQPlan also check
the flag before they start, for a plan cancelled between dequeue and
work().

A Procedure without a flag (FTL) behaves as before.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked whether an incomplete live set from a cancelled WTF::Liveness::compute() can be consumed before the next flag check: every user of the hooked Air adapters (greedy buildLiveRanges/coalescing/spill-cost scans, the stack graph-coloring interference build, and the O0 GenerateAndAllocateRegisters path) re-checks the flag right after constructing the liveness, and lowerAfterRegAlloc / reportUsedRegisters use RegLiveness, which is a separate implementation without the hook and always computes fully — so no phase acts on a truncated live set.

Extended reasoning...

The change threads a cancellation flag from Wasm::Plan through B3::Procedure and Air::Code and polls it between phases and inside the liveness, register-allocation, stack-allocation and dead-code fixpoints; it touches no security-sensitive surface. One confirmed finding is posted inline, so the inline comment already signals that a human look is needed; this note only records the additional incomplete-liveness consumer check that was ruled out.

🔴 A Wasm tier-up cancelled during B3 dead-code sweep can read freed Values and corrupt memory on the compiler thread instead of just stopping. The early return changed at B3EliminateDeadCode.cpp:92-93 fires after some blocks were swept, and proc.deleteValue has already freed dead values whose dead users (an Upsilon's phi(), or a dead child) still sit in unswept later blocks. Both callers keep walking the IR before their next poll: B3ReduceStrength.cpp:653 then builds PhiChildren (:688), and B3Generate.cpp:105 runs duplicateTails and fixSSA (:116-117) which call performSubstitution. Fix: never leave the sweep half done; poll only before the sweep loop (or finish the sweep once started), so no cross-block reference dangles when a caller resumes.

Why this was flagged

Plan::fail sets m_cancelled (WasmPlan.cpp:127) while the compiler thread is inside eliminateDeadCodeImpl's sweep loop at B3EliminateDeadCode.cpp:89-108. A dead Phi in a loop header and its dead Upsilon in the latch, or any dead value whose dead child lives in an earlier block, are both unreached by the worklist. The sweep deletes the Phi/child via proc.deleteValue (:103), then the poll at :92 returns with the later block unswept, leaving the Upsilon's phi() or the value's child pointing at freed memory. ReduceStrength::run calls this at B3ReduceStrength.cpp:653 and then, with no poll in between, constructs PhiChildren at :688, whose constructor reads upsilon->phi()->index() (B3PhiChildren.cpp:43-44) from the freed Value. generateToAir calls eliminateDeadCode at B3Generate.cpp:105 and then duplicateTails and fixSSA (:116-117) before the poll at :118; fixSSA calls value->performSubstitution() on every value (B3FixSSA.cpp:198), which reads child->opcode() from the freed child. On the base branch the sweep always completes, so no freed Value is ever referenced.

Verification: proc.deleteValue(value) (B3EliminateDeadCode.cpp:103) frees the Value immediately. The new check at :92-93 exits after some blocks are swept, so dead values in unswept later blocks can point at Values just freed. B3ReduceStrength.cpp:653 then builds PhiChildren (:688), reading the freed Phi; B3Generate.cpp:105 then runs duplicateTails, reading freed children. The base never returned mid-sweep.
