This adds backpressure support to decrypt mode, preventing large decrypt operations from allocating too much memory.

What

  • prefetchSegmentBatches() returns a ReadableStream<SegmentBatch>. Its pull() starts a batch's fetch-and-decrypt and enqueues the pending promise without awaiting it, so the stream keeps pulling until CountQueuingStrategy's high-water mark is reached. That is what allows several batches in flight at once; a source that awaits in pull() would only ever have one.
  • High-water mark is maxConcurrentSegmentBatches - 1, because the output stream's reader holds the batch it is currently draining.
  • The output stream's pull() drains one batch a segment at a time.

Why

Most of the machinery in #1091 only exists because the scheduler sits behind the ReadableStream that already provides backpressure. Removed here:

  • Mailbox / mailbox() and the promise.catch() added so unawaited rejections don't crash Node
  • createBoundedSegmentScheduler, SegmentBatchScheduler, SegmentBatchSchedulerState
  • rejectChunks, updateChunkQueue, the onError index slicing, and swapping consumed mailboxes for fresh ones

Errors now reach the reader through the stream itself, the queue keeps batches in order, and a drained batch can be garbage-collected as soon as the reader moves on.

Behaviour differences vs #1091

Tests

Performance

No measurable difference from #1091 in wall clock, peak RSS, or CPU, in either the paired A/B bench or a 3 GiB multi-batch decrypt. Details: #1092 (comment)

Risk

Touches the decrypt path's ordering and error propagation. Integrity checks themselves are unchanged (decryptChunk and segmentIntegrity are untouched).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Decrypt reads now prefetch encrypted segments in batches, with batch size and concurrency automatically adjusted to segment size when not specified.
    • Explicit batch size and concurrency settings are applied independently.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid segment sizes and batch settings are rejected before key rewrap.
    • Fetch and decrypt failures stop further reads and cancel queued batches while preserving already-delivered plaintext.

📝 Walkthrough

Decrypt batch settings now derive from encrypted segment size and a fixed byte budget when unset. Decryption uses an ordered stream prefetcher instead of per-chunk mailboxes and the legacy scheduler. Manifest segment sizes and explicit batch settings are validated, with new tests for prefetch limits, failures, and fallback behavior.

Changes: Decrypt prefetch flow

Layer / File(s) Summary

Unset batch settings derive from segment size and the configured byte budget. Explicit values are validated and override only their corresponding defaults. Documentation describes the defaults and memory relationship.
Fetch and decrypt ordered batches
lib/tdf3/src/tdf.ts, lib/tests/mocha/unit/tdf.spec.ts
A ReadableStream prefetcher replaces the legacy scheduler and per-chunk mailboxes. Fetch and decrypt operations return plaintext arrays, and batch failures reject their promises.
Integrate batches into decrypt stream
lib/tdf3/src/tdf.ts, lib/tests/mocha/encrypt-decrypt.spec.ts
The decrypt stream emits plaintext segments in order, reports progress, and cancels further reads after a batch failure. Tests cover ranged-read failures, manifest validation, and missing segment-size fallback.

xtest bench: #1091 (baseline) vs this PR (candidate)

Run locally on an otherwise-idle macOS laptop against a local platform, using the js CLI built from each PR head (#1091 @ 57281d2c, #1092 @ 63b14085).

Paired A/B (pytest --bench --sdks js --bench-baseline js@refs--pull--1091--head --bench-candidate js@refs--pull--1092--head)

No regressions. All cells resolved within the 15% threshold (runner noise floor ±3.2%). The run was rated trustworthy and the A/A control did not trip.

Caveat: the largest A/B payload is 32 MiB, which is 16 segments at the 2 MiB default. With the derived window that is a single batch for both PRs, so these cells measure fixed overhead (startup, rewrap, the stream plumbing), not multi-batch pacing.

Multi-batch decrypt at 3 GiB (--bench-scale 3GiB + 6 alternating manual rounds, /usr/bin/time -l)

1,536 segments, about 73 batches of 21 with 3 in flight. Both builds decrypt the same ciphertext to /dev/null.

build wall (median of 6) peak RSS median (range)
#1091 2.11 s 618 MiB (601–652)
#1092 2.11 s 626 MiB (599–636)

Throughput is about 1.3 GiB/s for both. RSS is the same within noise; an earlier single --bench-scale sample showed 661 vs 603 MiB, which the repeated rounds show to be run-to-run variance.

Conclusion: no measurable performance or memory difference between the hand-rolled scheduler and Streams API backpressure.

Side finding: js CLI cannot decrypt TDFs over 4 GiB

--bench-scale 8GiB failed for both builds with InvalidFileError: unable to find end of central directory record. The TDF's ZIP64 trailer is well-formed. The cause is Node v24.21.0's fs.openAsBlob(), which reports size = 264053 for an 8,590,198,645-byte file (exactly the size mod 2^32). The CLI wraps inputs with openAsBlob → fromBrowserFile, so slice(-1024) reads the wrong bytes. This is unrelated to either PR; it would need an fd-based chunker in the CLI or a Node fix.

…SPX-4654)

Prototype alternative to #1091 for comparison. Same defaults and knobs
(derivePrefetchWindow, 128 MiB budget, explicit segmentBatchSize /
maxConcurrentSegmentBatches win), but the prefetch window is enforced by a
ReadableStream's high-water mark instead of a hand-rolled scheduler.

prefetchSegmentBatches() returns a ReadableStream whose pull() starts a
batch's fetch-and-decrypt and enqueues the pending promise without awaiting
it, so the stream keeps pulling until CountQueuingStrategy's high-water mark
(maxConcurrentSegmentBatches - 1; the reader holds the batch it is draining)
is reached. The output stream's pull() drains one batch a segment at a time.

This deletes the Mailbox type, createBoundedSegmentScheduler and its state
types, updateChunkQueue, rejectChunks, and the consumed-mailbox swapping:
errors propagate through the stream, the queue holds order, and a drained
batch is garbage as soon as the reader moves on. Cancelling the output stream
now cancels the batch stream, so no further ranged reads are issued.

Behaviour change: a segment that fails its integrity check fails its whole
batch, so earlier segments in that batch are no longer released to the reader.
