What and why

The platform offers hybrid post-quantum/traditional KAS keys, hpqt:secp256r1-mlkem768 and hpqt:secp384r1-mlkem1024 (the composite KEMs of draft-ietf-lamps-pq-composite-kem-14, in lib/ocrypto), but the web SDK cannot write key access objects for them (#1048). This adds hybrid-wrapped key access objects for these two algorithms:

  • the composite SPKI is read and written (OIDs 1.3.6.1.5.5.7.6.59 and .63: ML-KEM key, then uncompressed EC point), so that KAS keys and the well-known base key of these types are recognised;
  • hybridEncapsulate, an optional CryptoService capability like the ML-KEM ones: ECDH P-256 or P-384 with an ephemeral key through WebCrypto, ML-KEM-768 or 1024 through @noble/post-quantum, then the SHA3-256 combiner of draft-14 §3.4 (@noble/hashes, now a direct dependency), whose 32 bytes are the AES-256 key, as lib/ocrypto uses it;
  • HybridWrapped, which shares the direct key wrap and the DER envelope with MlKemWrapped, and requires the key id, since the KAS finds hybrid keys by id only.

Reading needs no change: the KAS unwraps hybrid-wrapped objects and wraps the key again for the client's RSA or EC session key. X-Wing (hpqt:xwing) is not covered.

How to test

  • cd lib && npm test. The new tests/mocha/unit/crypto/hybrid.spec.ts checks the combiner against the draft's known answers, reads the hybrid test key pairs of the Go SDK (sdk/tdf_test.go) and writes their public keys back unchanged, decapsulates this SDK's output with their private keys as lib/ocrypto does, and recovers the DEK from a hybrid-wrapped object.
  • Interoperability was also checked against platform service/v0.27.0 (lib/ocrypto v0.14.0, Go SDK v0.31.0), with services.kas.preview.hybrid_tdf_enabled and a hpqt:secp384r1-mlkem1024 KAS key:
    • lib/ocrypto's FromPrivatePEM(...).Decrypt unwraps the keys this code wraps, for both algorithms;
    • an envelope written by this SDK is read back through the KAS rewrap;
    • an envelope written by the Go SDK is read by this SDK through the KAS rewrap.

Risk

Cryptography: a new key wrapping path, taken only when the chosen KAS key is hpqt:*. The other algorithms are unchanged, except that MlKemWrapped now builds its envelope through the shared helper, which its existing tests cover.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for hybrid post-quantum key wrapping with P-256 and ML-KEM-768 or P-384 and ML-KEM-1024.
    • Hybrid public keys can now be imported, exported, and used to create wrapped key access entries.
    • Added @noble/hashes as a runtime dependency.

📝 Walkthrough

The SDK adds support for P-256/ML-KEM-768 and P-384/ML-KEM-1024 public keys. It parses and exports their composite SPKI encoding, performs hybrid encapsulation, and creates hybrid-wrapped key-access objects.

Changes: Hybrid KEM support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Algorithm declarations and public-key encoding
lib/tdf3/src/crypto/declarations.ts, lib/tdf3/src/crypto/core/hybrid-asn1.ts, lib/tdf3/src/crypto/core/keys.ts, lib/tdf3/src/crypto/core/key-format.ts, lib/src/access.ts, lib/tests/mocha/unit/crypto/hybrid.spec.ts
Adds the two hybrid algorithm identifiers and their DER SPKI encoding, decoding, import, and export paths. Maps both identifiers to JWA names. Tests cover algorithm recognition, key parsing, and SPKI round-tripping.
Hybrid encapsulation and crypto service
lib/package.json, lib/tdf3/src/crypto/core/hybrid.ts, lib/tdf3/src/crypto/index.ts, lib/tests/mocha/unit/crypto/hybrid-fixtures.ts, lib/tests/mocha/unit/crypto/hybrid.spec.ts
Adds @noble/hashes and implements ML-KEM encapsulation, ephemeral ECDH, and the SHA3-256 combiner. Exposes hybridEncapsulate through the crypto service. Tests check combiner vectors and encapsulation compatibility.
Hybrid-wrapped key-access flow
lib/tdf3/src/client/index.ts, lib/tdf3/src/models/key-access.ts, lib/tdf3/src/tdf.ts, lib/tests/mocha/unit/crypto/hybrid.spec.ts
Routes hybrid algorithms to hybrid-wrapped key access. Adds HybridWrapped and a shared KEM key-access writer. Tests check key-access creation and DEK recovery.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to b5797

Hybrid wrapping follows the stated draft and recovers the DEK in the tested path. A Client-level routing test would improve regression confidence; no concrete production failure is established, so the change is mergeable with normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 46346

The new wrapping path handles encryption keys and depends on KAS support for a new format. The reviewed client path preserves key identity and existing wrapping controls, and no specific security flaw was established. Production KAS behavior and rollout compatibility remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new path can affect the recoverability of data encrypted for a hybrid KAS key. The inspected client flow does not show a new cross-tenant authority or privileged sink.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Public-key input is classified and decoded before wrapping; the hybrid factory requires a matching algorithm and nonblank kid. Read-side rewrap preserves the manifest key type and identifier for the existing KAS request rather than granting a new local decryption authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The shared KEM writer constructs the envelope and key-access fields before returning them; a hybrid encapsulation or wrapping failure does not return a completed object from that write.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before broadly enabling hybrid writes, verify the selected KAS deployments' hybrid key lookup, authorization, decapsulation, and rewrap behavior, including deployments where hybrid support is disabled.

Adds the hybrid post-quantum/traditional KEMs that the platform's
lib/ocrypto offers as hpqt:secp256r1-mlkem768 and
hpqt:secp384r1-mlkem1024, the composite KEMs of
draft-ietf-lamps-pq-composite-kem-14. When the KAS key, or the base
key of the well-known configuration, is one of them, the SDK writes a
hybrid-wrapped key access object:

- the public key is read from its composite SPKI (OIDs
  1.3.6.1.5.5.7.6.59 and .63, ML-KEM key then uncompressed EC point);
- encapsulation runs ECDH P-256 or P-384 against an ephemeral key with
  WebCrypto and ML-KEM-768 or 1024 with @noble/post-quantum, then the
  SHA3-256 combiner of the draft, whose 32 bytes are the AES-256 key;
- the DEK is sealed and enveloped as for mlkem-wrapped, which now
  shares that code, with the key id the KAS requires.

Reading needs no change: the KAS unwraps hybrid-wrapped objects and
wraps the DEK again for the client's RSA or EC session key.

Tests check the draft's combiner vectors, read the Go SDK's hybrid
test keys, and decapsulate the SDK's output with their private keys as
lib/ocrypto does. The platform's lib/ocrypto v0.14.0 also unwraps keys
wrapped by this code, for both variants.

Add a Client-level hybrid encryption test.

lib/tests/mocha/unit/crypto/hybrid.spec.ts:204-240 calls HybridWrapped.write directly. It does not exercise Client.encrypt, the new classification branch, buildKeyAccess, or TDF serialization. Add a Client encryption test for the hybrid fixtures that asserts the resulting key access object has type: 'hybrid-wrapped' and the expected kid.
