Summary

Adds an opt-in that writes the TDF manifest under the zip entry name manifest.json, the name the TDF spec defines, instead of the legacy 0.manifest.json. Default output is unchanged.

  • unprefixedManifestName: true on CreateZTDFOptions (also EncryptParams), and the CLI flag --unprefixedManifestName.
  • tdfSpecVersion: '4.2.2' overrides the opt-in and keeps 0.manifest.json.
  • Readers already accept both names (fix(sdk): read manifest.json from a TDF archive #1042). Readers released before that can't open output written with this option; the TSDoc says so.

This replaces the earlier version of this PR, which changed the default and was a breaking change. It mirrors opentdf/platform#4049 (Go) and opentdf/java-sdk#405 (Java).

Testing

  • cd lib && npm test (mocha, wtr, karma): all passing. npm run lint and make format clean.
  • cd cli && bats bin/opentdf.bats: 12/12.
  • New tests in manifest-entry-name.spec.ts: the opt-in writes manifest.json and round-trips; tdfSpecVersion: '4.2.2' keeps 0.manifest.json. A bats case checks the flag appears in encrypt --help.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Encryption can optionally use the standard manifest.json filename instead of the legacy 0.manifest.json. The default remains the legacy filename.
    • The option is available through the library and CLI.
    • TDF spec version 4.2.2 retains the legacy filename, even when the option is enabled.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for the filename option, the version override, and decrypting the resulting archives.

📝 Walkthrough

The TDF3 SDK, OpenTDF API, and CLI now support an option to write the manifest as manifest.json. Spec version 4.2.2 retains 0.manifest.json, and the default remains unchanged. Tests verify both naming cases and decryption.

Changes: Manifest entry name option

Layer / File(s) Summary
Expose and forward the option
lib/tdf3/src/client/builders.ts, lib/src/opentdf.ts, cli/src/cli.ts, cli/bin/opentdf.bats, lib/tdf3/src/client/index.ts
The encryption API, OpenTDF API, and CLI expose unprefixedManifestName. The API and CLI pass the setting to TDF3 encryption. The CLI help test checks that the flag is listed.
Select and write the manifest entry
lib/tdf3/src/tdf.ts
manifestEntryNameFor selects the ZIP entry name. The writer uses that name for initial entry metadata and the later manifest write. Spec version 4.2.2 selects 0.manifest.json; otherwise, the option selects manifest.json, with 0.manifest.json as the default.
Validate manifest naming
lib/tests/mocha/manifest-entry-name.spec.ts
Tests verify that the option writes manifest.json, that spec version 4.2.2 overrides the option, and that both archives decrypt to the plaintext.

The discrepancy affects callers who opt in while passing an earlier version string. Narrow the documentation to the 4.2.2 legacy override; this is a bounded issue with a small correction.

A rabbit checks the archive's name,
And finds the legacy path the same.
With one small flag, a new name gleams,
The older version keeps its seams.
The files decrypt; the test is done,
Then off I hop beneath the sun.

You'll have to add (and/or update) conformance tests in opentdf/tests first

Add an unprefixedManifestName encrypt option (CreateZTDFOptions,
EncryptParams, EncryptConfiguration, and the CLI --unprefixedManifestName
flag) that stores the manifest under the zip entry name manifest.json.
Without the option, and whenever tdfSpecVersion is 4.2.2, the writer still
emits 0.manifest.json, so default output is unchanged.

Document 4.2.2 as the legacy override.

The lower-level TDF3 API accepts tdfSpecVersion as a string. If a caller passes 4.2.1 with no assertion configuration and enables unprefixedManifestName, the writer can emit manifest.json; it also uses the non-legacy integrity path. The higher-level API and assertion helper identify only 4.2.2 and 4.3.0 as supported versions. Name 4.2.2 explicitly in the option documentation rather than broadening the manifest selector alone.
