"""Serve a TDF over HTTP ``Range`` requests, optionally with most of it missing.

DSPX-5111. A partial decrypt of a 100 GiB-50 TiB TDF needs only the ZIP head,
the encrypted segments covering the requested plaintext, and the tail
(manifest, central directory, end records). :func:`retention_plan` says which
ciphertext bytes those are, :class:`ExtentStore` keeps just them, and
:func:`serve` puts either a store or an ordinary file behind a loopback HTTP
server that logs every request.

A request touching a byte that was not kept gets ``410 Gone``, never zeros: a
reader that over-fetches must fail loudly rather than decrypt garbage, and
must not pass a test by accident.

All ranges here are half-open ``(start, end)`` pairs.

A short read is sent and logged as a success.

os.pread can return fewer bytes than requested: extents.bin is shorter than the index says, or a FullFile shrank after __init__ cached st_size. Neither read() checks, so do_GET writes a short body after already promising Content-Length: end - start. A keep-alive client then waits for bytes that never come until its timeout, and probably retries. Meanwhile served at L289 is set from the planned chunk end, not len(chunk), so log records a full 206.

Suggest raising on a short read here, and the same in FullFile.read:

    def read(self, start: int, end: int) -> bytes:
        with self.path.open("rb") as f:
            data = os.pread(f.fileno(), end - start, start)
        if len(data) != end - start:
            raise OSError(f"{self.path}: short read at {start}")
        return data

Also count what was actually written in the do_GET loop:

                    chunk = source.read(pos, min(pos + _CHUNK, end))
                    self.wfile.write(chunk)
                    served += len(chunk)

Together with the handle_error change, a short read then fails the test instead of hanging a client.

Join handler threads before serve() returns.

The test helper reads the complete response before it returns, but each handler appends to log afterward. With server.daemon_threads = True, server_close() does not join those handlers, so the context can exit before the matching Request is appended. The existing tests inspect log after the context exits.

Use non-daemon handlers and bound idle keep-alive reads:

🐛 Suggested fix
     class Handler(BaseHTTPRequestHandler):
         protocol_version = "HTTP/1.1"
+        timeout = 5
     server = ThreadingHTTPServer(("127.0.0.1", 0), Handler)
-    server.daemon_threads = True
+    server.daemon_threads = False

This synchronizes log reads after the context exits. It does not synchronize a caller that reads log inside the active with block.

Review comment at @xtest/rangeserve.py at line 294:
Set `ThreadingHTTPServer.daemon_threads` to false so `server_close()` waits for
handler threads before the serving context exits. Set `Handler.timeout` to a
bounded value so idle keep-alive reads cannot block shutdown indefinitely.

Handler threads aren't joined on exit, so log can be incomplete after serve() returns.

ThreadingHTTPServer defaults to daemon_threads = True, and socketserver doesn't track daemon threads, so server_close() never joins them. The "joined on exit" in the docstring only covers the serve_forever thread. Two consequences:

  • Every handler appends to log after writing the body, so a client can return before the entry exists. Measured locally: in 3000 back-to-back requests, the entry was missing on 13 (~0.4%) when len(log) was read right after the response. The current tests only escape this because shutdown() blocks for up to 0.5s.
  • With HTTP/1.1 keep-alive (Go, Java and JS clients all pool connections), an idle handler can outlive the with block. It still holds source, so it can append to log later or pread an ExtentStore after close().

DSPX-5117's "which ranges did the SDK fetch" assertions will hit this. Suggested fix: join the handlers, and bound the join by giving idle keep-alive connections a timeout:

    class Handler(BaseHTTPRequestHandler):
        protocol_version = "HTTP/1.1"
        timeout = 5 # idle keep-alive handlers exit, so server_close() can join them

Optionally, also build the Request before writing the body, so log is accurate inside the with block and not just after it.

Suggested change
server = ThreadingHTTPServer(("127.0.0.1", 0), Handler)
server.daemon_threads = True
server = ThreadingHTTPServer(("127.0.0.1", 0), Handler)
# Join handler threads in server_close(): the log is complete, and no
# handler touches ``source`` once serve() has returned.
server.daemon_threads = False

port = server.server_address[1]
thread = threading.Thread(
target=server.serve_forever, name=f"rangeserve-{port}", daemon=True
)
thread.start()
try:
yield f"http://127.0.0.1:{port}/payload.tdf", log
finally:

Exceptions inside a handler never reach the test.

Nothing overrides handle_error, so an exception in do_GET/do_HEAD (an OSError from pread, a buggy Source, the short read in the other comment) only becomes a traceback on stderr, which pytest captures, plus a dropped connection. SDK HTTP clients often retry an idempotent GET on a reset connection, so a server bug can pass on retry or show up as an unrelated SDK network error. That's the failure mode the 410 design is meant to rule out.

Suggestion: record the exceptions and re-raise them when serve() exits, leaving client disconnects alone (a partial reader may legitimately hang up early). This needs import sys, and the suggested change below depends on it:

    errors: list[BaseException] = []

    class Server(ThreadingHTTPServer):
        def handle_error(self, request, client_address) -> None:
            exc = sys.exc_info()[1]
            if exc is not None and not isinstance(exc, ConnectionError):
                errors.append(exc)
            super().handle_error(request, client_address)

    server = Server(("127.0.0.1", 0), Handler)

Related: the log_message override above also silences log_error, so stdlib-generated errors (501 for unsupported methods, malformed request lines, header-too-long) bypass both log and stderr. Consider silencing only the access log, e.g. by overriding log_request instead.
