Covers hexless policy bindings, Base64(HMAC), the form the TDF spec defines. Released KAS from opentdf/platform v0.5.3 until opentdf/platform#4223 only accept the legacy Base64(hex(HMAC)).

  • test_tdf_with_hexless_policy_binding: rewrites a normal TDF's bindings to the hexless form. On platforms in the affected range it expects a KAS rejection; elsewhere it expects decrypt to succeed. The range is detected from PLATFORM_TAG, because source builds report a stale version.
  • test_tdf_with_altered_hexless_policy_binding: a wrong HMAC in the hexless form is rejected.
  • test_tdf_with_altered_policy_binding now flips an HMAC bit and keeps the encoding well-formed. Before, it produced a malformed binding, so the test passed on the format check rather than the HMAC check.
  • Offline unit tests for the rewrite helpers and the platform-range check.

Helpers and tests are named for the format (hexless), matching the SDK opt-ins (WithHexlessPolicyBinding, opentdf/platform#4232). A follow-up (#600) adjusts the decrypt expectation for SDK readers that re-encode hexless bindings.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Expanded coverage for encrypted files using hexless policy bindings, including successful decryption on compatible platforms and expected errors when the format is rejected.
    • Added checks that modified policy-binding data is rejected and that both legacy and hexless forms are handled consistently.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes add platform-version detection for a policy-binding incompatibility and helpers to convert or alter policy bindings. Unit and decryption tests cover legacy and hexless encodings, version-range expectations, and altered HMAC rejection.

Changes: Policy-binding validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Platform-version detection
xtest/tdfs.py, xtest/test_tdfs_units.py
The new predicate identifies tagged versions from 0.5.3 up to, but not including, 0.29.1. Unit tests cover releases before, within, and after that range, plus main and a missing tag.
Binding transformations
xtest/test_tdfs.py, xtest/test_tdfs_units.py
Helpers convert legacy bindings to hexless Base64(HMAC) and alter decoded HMAC values while preserving supported representations. Unit tests cover object and string bindings, existing hexless values, and altered HMACs.
Hexless decryption validation
xtest/test_tdfs.py
Decryption tests check hexless bindings against the platform-version predicate and verify that altered hexless HMACs produce a KAS request error.

These changes only add tests and helpers for hexless policy bindings. The test expectation for SDK readers that re-encode bindings is addressed by a planned follow-up, so no merge-blocking risk is established.

KAS must accept a policy binding in the spec's Base64(HMAC) form as
well as the legacy Base64(hex(HMAC)) every SDK writes. No released KAS
did (opentdf/platform#2095 compared an untrimmed buffer); fixed in
opentdf/platform#4223.

test_tdf_with_spec_policy_binding re-encodes the binding to the spec
form, which needs no key, and expects decrypt to succeed. It is gated on
the new platform-only feature spec_policy_binding, force-only until a
release carries the fix. test_tdf_with_altered_spec_policy_binding
expects a well-formed spec binding with a wrong HMAC to be rejected, so
the new path cannot fail open.

The point is to show that a real KAS -- the current release and main --
rejects an on-spec policy binding. A force-only gate skipped exactly
those cells, so drop it. The test fails until a platform carrying
opentdf/platform#4223 is under test.

change_policy_binding stored str(bytes) -- the literal "b'...'" -- so
test_tdf_with_altered_policy_binding sent invalid base64 and only showed
that KAS rejects a malformed binding, never that it checks the HMAC.
Flip a bit of the HMAC instead and re-encode in the binding's own form,
so a legacy hex binding stays well-formed hex. The spec-form tamper
helper now reuses it.

Platform releases from opentdf/platform#2095 (v0.5.3) until #4223 reject
a Base64(HMAC) policy binding. Against those, assert the decrypt fails
with a KAS error instead of failing the cell, keyed on PLATFORM_TAG
since a source build reports the last release's PLATFORM_VERSION.
