Description

env.LookupEnv now treats a webhook response with a non-2xx status as a failed fetch.

  • env/web_env.go: getEnvValueFromHTTP returns env webhook returned <status> when the status is not 2xx, before it reads the body.
  • env/env_test.go: new test TestLookupEnvRejectsErrorStatus. It covers 200, 201 and 299 as successes, 300, 401, 403, 404, 500 and 503 as errors, and a 503 that arrives after a successful fetch.

Motivation and Context

Found while fixing miniohq/aistor#8228. getEnvValueFromHTTP returned the body of any response as the value, whatever its status. LookupEnv then cached that body in _KEY, the value it falls back to when the webhook is down. As a result:

  • A webhook that answers 404 with 404 page not found sets the value to 404 page not found. In MinIO AIStor, that string becomes the root user and password, and it authenticates.
  • A 503 after a successful fetch replaces the good cached value with Service Unavailable. After mc admin service restart, the configured root credentials stop working and Service Unavailable authenticates as root.

With this change, an error status returns an error, as an unreachable webhook does. LookupEnv falls back to the cached value if there is one. Nothing is written to the cache.

How to test this PR?

go test -race -tags kqueue -run TestLookupEnvRejectsErrorStatus ./env/

Unit test, main at d14771401857 against this branch:

Webhook response main This branch
200, 201 and 299 fetched-value (control) value fetched-value, cached value fetched-value, cached
300 Multiple Choices value Multiple Choices, no error, cached error, nothing cached
401 Unauthorized value Unauthorized, no error, cached error, nothing cached
403 Forbidden value Forbidden, no error, cached error, nothing cached
404 Not Found value Not Found, no error, cached error, nothing cached
500 Internal Server Error value Internal Server Error, no error, cached error, nothing cached
503 Service Unavailable value Service Unavailable, no error, cached error, nothing cached
200, then 503 returns Service Unavailable and caches it returns the cached fetched-value, and the cache keeps it

End to end: MinIO AIStor from miniohq/aistor#8221, single node, 4 drives. The two binaries differ only in the minio/pkg tree. Both root variables are env:// references to a local webhook that serves hookroot / hooksecret-1234.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Environment lookups now return an error when an HTTP request receives a non-success status, rather than treating the response body as a value. Successful responses continue to be cached, and a previously cached value remains available if a later request fails. Successful HTTP responses in the 2xx range continue to provide environment values.

getEnvValueFromHTTP returned the body of any response as the value, so an error page such as "404 page not found" became the value and replaced the cached value that LookupEnv falls back to. Treat a non-2xx status as a fetch error.

📝 Walkthrough

The HTTP environment lookup now returns an error for non-2xx responses instead of using the response body as the value. Tests cover successful lookup, error statuses, and use of a cached value after a later error response.

Changes: HTTP Environment Lookup

Layer / File(s) Summary
HTTP response validation and cache behavior
env/web_env.go, env/env_test.go
The lookup rejects responses outside the 200–299 range before reading the body. Tests cover successful responses, error responses, and cached-value use after a later 503 response.

Comment thread env/env_test.go Outdated
The test checked only HTTP 200 as a success, so an implementation accepting 200 alone passed it. It now asserts the value and the cache for 200, 201 and 299, and an error with no cache for 300 next to the 4xx and 5xx codes.

Do not return before closing the webhook response body.

getEnvValueFromHTTP returns on every non-2xx response before it reads or closes resp.Body. Repeated failed webhook lookups can therefore retain response-body resources and reduce HTTP connection reuse. Close resp.Body before returning the status error.
