Fix env.LookupEnv treating values that start with "env" as references - #284
Conversation
LookupEnv sent every value that began with the letters "env" to the remote fetch, so a plain value such as "envroot" resolved to empty. In MinIO AIStor, MINIO_ROOT_USER=envroot stopped the server, and two such root values made it use the default credentials (miniohq/aistor#8200). A value is now a reference only when its scheme, in any letter case, is "env" or "env+tls" followed by "://".

selection so mixed-case env references reach the correct transport. Update the
scheme switch in getEnvValueFromHTTP to compare a lowercase scheme, preserving
case-insensitive handling for both supported schemes.

The row pointed at a closed port, so a dial error also satisfied it, and a change that stopped rejecting unparsable references went unnoticed. It now points at the live test server.
govulncheck fails on main since the Go vulnerability database update of 2026-10-08. golang.org/x/net v0.58.0 has four symbol-level findings (GO-2026-6603, GO-2026-6611, GO-2026-6612, GO-2026-6617) and one package-level finding (GO-2026-6610); v0.60.0 fixes all five. The other golang.org/x versions are the ones x/net v0.60.0 and x/text v0.42.0 require.

The row passed when a change sent the malformed reference and then failed on the response, because any error satisfied it. The row now points at its own listener and requires no accepted connection and a url.EscapeError.

I reproduced the bug on 03de1bc: the new test fails 11 rows and passes 7 there, and all 18 pass here. Every clause in the new condition is caught by a mutant except ok, which is redundant (note inline). With go1.26.9, govulncheck exits 3 on base and 0 on this branch, and go.mod/go.sum match #283 byte for byte. One small correction to the description follows as a separate comment.

The ok check is redundant: an unset variable reads as "", which has no "://", so found already rejects it. Lowercase the scheme only when the value contains "://", so a plain value such as a password is never copied.

@shtripat You were right that VulnCheck had not run on I merged |
Description
env.LookupEnvtreats a value as a remote reference only when it starts withenv://orenv+tls://, in any letter case. Before this change, any value that began with the lettersenvwas handled as a remote reference.env/web_env.go: split the value on://and compare the part before it withstrings.ToLower.strings.EqualFoldis not used because it also matches non-ASCII lookalikes such as U+017F (long s), whichurl.Parserejects.env/env_test.go: new table testTestLookupEnvReferenceScheme, 18 rows. Each row checks the returned value, user, password and error, the_KEYcache, andGet.go.mod,go.sum: no change againstmain. This branch first carried thegolang.org/x/netv0.60.0 bump. add policy actions for migrating and deleting builtin KMS keys #283 merged the same bump on 2026-10-15, and this branch now includesmain(2d98535), so neither file differs frommain.Motivation and Context
Fixes miniohq/aistor#8200. A plain value such as
envrootwas handled as a remote reference, rejected withinvalid argumentsbefore any request was sent, and came back empty. In MinIO AIStor:MINIO_ROOT_USER=envrootstopped the server withMissing credential environment variable, "MINIO_ROOT_USER".envmade the server start with the default credentials,minioadmin/minioadmin.The same applied to every setting read through
env.Get, not only root credentials.Behaviour changes for reviewers:
ENV://andEnv://values are now references. Before, they were plain values. URL schemes are case-insensitive (RFC 3986, section 3.1), andurl.Parsealready treatedenv+TLS://this way.env://orenv+tls://(for exampleenvs://orenv:/x) are now plain values.GetIntandGetDurationon anenv-prefixed plain value now return a parse error instead of the default. An upper-case reference that cannot be fetched and has no cached value now gives the default with no error, andIsSetfalse, where before the literal value gave a parse error andIsSettrue. How to test this PR?
