Prepare version-bump branches with assigned reminder issues - #1043
Conversation
Keep post-release version preparation useful when organization policy blocks Actions from creating pull requests. Push only the version changes and create or update an assigned issue with a prefilled human PR link, preserving branches and reminders on retries without new credentials. Summary
Keep post-release version preparation automatic even when GitHub Actions is not allowed to create pull requests: prepare the branch, then create an assigned reminder issue with a prefilled Create version-bump PR link.
This follows #1042. Its first live run successfully prepared the version bump but failed to create the PR because the repository's bot-PR setting is locked by policy. Switching the PR action would not change that restriction; this approach needs no additional credential or policy exception.
New workflow
1.0.1→1.0.2-alpha.0.bot/bump-<version>, touching only the manifest and root lockfile.alpha.0means.Safety and reruns
Permissions and scope
Remove
peter-evans/create-pull-request, bot PR creation, automatic full-CI dispatch, and actions/PR write permissions. Use only pinned first-party setup actions, Git, the runner's preinstalled GitHub CLI, and contents + issues write permissions. This PR does not change the current package version, create a live reminder, publish anything, modify repository policies, or introduce a token secret. Actual issue creation with
GITHUB_TOKENstill needs verification on the first intended run after merge.Updated release instructions, the feature overview, design, pipeline inventory, and operator-approved decision 0016.
Validation
Case 1 — opening a draft PR:
npm run build— passed.node --test .github/scripts/*.test.cjs— 27/27 passed (13 existing bump tests and 14 new reminder tests).git diff --check— passed; root package manifests are unchanged.Full Case 2 checks, including repository-wide
prettier-fix, and the AI pre-review are deferred until ready for review. No live workflow run was performed; the workflow deliberately checks outmain, so the new implementation becomes available after merge.
