fix(runtime): no OS-blocking waits or lookups on may worker threads - #538
Handlers run as coroutines on may's worker threads. A call that blocks in the kernel parks the whole worker thread, not just one coroutine, so every coroutine queued on that worker waits behind it. In production this showed up as BFF scheduler-lag probes over 100 ms on about 2% of samples, with CPU nearly idle.
Fixed request-path blockers
getaddrinfo (std::net::ToSocketAddrs):
the BFF proxy's downstream lookup when its cache misses;
the fetch pool's default resolver;
HttpClient::from_url on the unpooled fetch path.
std::sync::Condvar waits in the JWKS and SPIFFE providers, while a refresh of an empty cache or an unknown-kid refresh is in flight.
Change
New brrtrouter::net. It resolves names on dedicated OS threads, and the caller waits on a may channel, so only the coroutine parks.
Cache: 30 s TTL. A stale answer is served while one background refresh runs.
Concurrent lookups of the same name share one resolution; failures are cached for 2 s.
A new CI step denies those two lints. The existing clippy step is || true; this one fails.
The five remaining uses run on their own OS threads or before serving. Each carries an allow with a reason.
Tests
cargo test --lib: 844 passed. That includes 5 new net:: tests: IP literals, coroutine lookup plus cache hit, 32 concurrent lookups, failure without a hang, and connecting by name.

Walkthrough
This pull request adds a shared DNS resolver that performs hostname lookups on dedicated threads and routes HTTP and proxy lookups through it. JWKS refresh waiters use coroutine-aware synchronization. Clippy checks now flag selected blocking APIs.

Summary
Blocking API lint policy .github/workflows/ci.yml, clippy.toml, src/middleware/memory.rs, src/runtime_watchdog.rs, src/server/http_server.rs
The Clippy configuration disallows selected blocking methods and types. CI fails the new check for those lints. Targeted allowances mark specific OS-thread uses.
Shared DNS resolver src/net.rs, src/lib.rs
The public net module adds a DNS resolver with cached and shared in-flight lookups, configurable worker count and TTLs, timeout handling, and TCP connection helpers. Tests cover IP literals, caching, concurrent lookups, failures, and local connections.
HTTP and proxy resolver integration src/http/fetch.rs, src/http/proxy.rs
HTTP fetch and proxy lookups use the shared resolver. HTTP passes resolved addresses to the client constructor, and proxy lookups use a two-second budget.
JWKS refresh signals use may mutex and condition-variable primitives. Initial and unknown-key refresh waiters use the shared timeout-aware wait helper.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 9b0ed
The change avoids blocking coroutine workers, but slow DNS lookups can exhaust the shared resolver and delay unrelated requests. DNS refresh and proxy caching also retain failure cases that should be addressed before merging.

On an empty cache, get_key_for waits for the full jwks_refresh_wait_timeout() (at least 5 seconds) after its own synchronous refresh has already stored the keys and sent notify_all. That notification is missed, so the first SVID validation is delayed by the full timeout. Wait only while refresh_in_progress is set, using wait_for_refresh.
Suggested fix
- // If cache was empty, wait for refresh to complete- if is_empty {- let (lock, cvar) = &**refresh_complete;- let guard = lock.lock().unwrap();- let _ = cvar.wait_timeout(guard, self.jwks_refresh_wait_timeout());- }+ // If cache was empty, wait only while another refresh is still running+ if is_empty {+ if let Some(in_progress) = &self.jwks_refresh_in_progress {+ let _ = crate::security::jwks_bearer::wait_for_refresh(+ refresh_complete,+ in_progress,+ self.jwks_refresh_wait_timeout(),+ );+ }+ }

Update get_key_for to avoid waiting after its synchronous refresh has completed:
when the cache is empty, wait only if jwks_refresh_in_progress indicates a
refresh is still running, using the existing wait_for_refresh mechanism with
jwks_refresh_complete and the configured timeout.
Track the joined refresh generation in waitforrefresh.
Track the joined refresh generation in wait_for_refresh.
wait_for_refresh returns only when the provider-wide refresh_in_progress flag is clear, or when its deadline passes. If a second refresh claims the flag after the first refresh publishes the key but before the waiter reacquires the mutex, the waiter waits again. It stays blocked until the second refresh ends or refresh_wait_timeout() expires. Record a refresh generation and return when that generation completes.

Update wait_for_refresh to track the refresh generation it joined and return
when that generation completes, even if a later refresh has already set

generation that has not completed by the timeout.

Bound the connect budget by the remaining fetch deadline.
connect_client gives DNS the full options.timeout, then starts a new full options.timeout for the TCP connect. A slow lookup can therefore leave the fetch running for about twice the configured timeout before the response starts.

Update connect_client to use one shared timeout budget for DNS resolution and
TCP connection: establish a deadline before calling crate::net::resolve, then
pass only the remaining duration to HttpClient::from_url_with_addresses.
Preserve the existing error mapping and TLS configuration behavior.
Make concurrentlookupsshareoneresolution detect lost in-flight sharing.
Make concurrent_lookups_share_one_resolution detect lost in-flight sharing.
The test asserts only that each handle returns Ok. Those assertions also pass when every caller runs its own resolution, so a regression in DnsResolver::lookup would not fail the test.
Counting submitted lookup jobs closes this gap only when the 32 callers overlap. If localhost resolves before later callers reach lookup, those callers read the cached result and submit no job. A count of 1 can then pass without the pending-sharing path running.
Make the overlap deterministic:
Record each job submission in a test-visible counter on DnsResolver.
Hold the first resolution until the other callers have joined the pending entry. A test-only seam or a barrier can do this.
After the handles join, assert that exactly one job was submitted.

Review comment at @src/net.rs around lines 339 - 342:
Update concurrent_lookups_share_one_resolution and the DnsResolver::lookup test
path to make pending-entry overlap deterministic: track submitted resolution
jobs through a test-visible counter and hold the first resolution until the
other callers have joined the pending entry, using an appropriate test seam or
synchronization mechanism. After joining all handles, assert that exactly one
job was submitted while preserving the existing success assertions.
A handler's coroutine runs on a may worker thread. Some calls block in the
kernel instead of parking the coroutine, so they take the whole worker thread
and every coroutine queued on it. Three of those were on request paths:
- getaddrinfo (std ToSocketAddrs) in the BFF proxy's downstream lookup, in
the fetch pool's default resolver, and in HttpClient::from_url on the
unpooled fetch path.
- std::sync::Condvar waits in the JWKS and SPIFFE providers. A request waits
there while another refreshes an empty cache or looks up an unknown kid.
New brrtrouter::net resolves names on dedicated OS threads ("brrtr-dns-N")
and has the caller wait on a may channel, which parks only the coroutine.
Answers are cached (BRRTR_DNS_TTL_SECS, default 30 s). An expired answer is
still served while one background refresh runs. Concurrent lookups of the same
name share one resolution, and failures are cached for 2 s. net::connect
resolves, then connects a may::net::TcpStream within one deadline.
The fetch pool, the unpooled fetch path (via may_minihttp's new
HttpClient::from_url_with_addresses) and the proxy now resolve through
brrtrouter::net. The JWKS and SPIFFE refresh signal is now a
may::sync::{Mutex, Condvar}.
Guardrail: clippy.toml disallows std::net::TcpStream, ToSocketAddrs,
std::thread::sleep, std Condvar and std mpsc::Receiver. A new CI step denies
those two lints. The five remaining uses all run on their own OS threads or
before serving, and each carries an allow with a reason.
- The proxy resolves uncached. It keeps its own cache, so a retry after a
refused connect must not get the dead address back from a second cache,
and a stale answer must not get a fresh TTL. A lookup that runs out of
time maps to ProxyError::Timeout (504), not Dns.
- net::resolve_uncached / DnsResolver::lookup_uncached for callers whose
cached address just failed.
- Jobs carry their callers' deadline. A lookup thread drops a job nobody
waits for any more, so a stalled resolver cannot spend later callers'
budgets. Default lookup threads: 4.
- A caller that times out removes itself from the pending entry's waiters.
- A failed refresh keeps the last good answer, with its original timestamp
so the next lookup tries again.
- net::connect splits the remaining deadline across the addresses left to
try, so one silent address does not starve the rest.
- SPIFFE: on an empty cache, wait only while a refresh is still running,
and the same in the "another thread is refreshing" path (both could miss
the notify and sit out the whole timeout).
- HttpServer::start documents that it runs on an OS thread (it may resolve
a bind name). Module docs gain an example and private helpers gain docs.
Four new tests: refresh failure keeps the last answer, a timed-out caller
is unregistered, an expired job restores the stale answer, and an uncached
lookup skips a fresh entry.
Re the CodeRabbit follow-up on src/security/spiffe/mod.rs:186 (wait after the provider's own synchronous refresh): agreed, fixed in 02d7d6a. Both SPIFFE waits (empty cache, and 'another thread is refreshing') now use wait_for_refresh, which waits only while jwks_refresh_in_progress is set, so a missed notify no longer sits out the whole timeout. Docstring coverage: private helpers in net now have docs.
