Versioned documentation can now use JavaScript sidebar configurations. These are selected when available, while existing JSON sidebar configurations remain supported as a fallback.
Version loading now includes the selected sidebar configuration, so documentation versions can display their configured navigation.

Versioned sidebar metadata now prefers a JavaScript sidebar file when one exists and falls back to the JSON path otherwise. Tests cover path resolution and loading a version with a JavaScript sidebar.
Added a resolver that selects the JavaScript sidebar path when that file exists and otherwise uses the JSON path. Version metadata now uses the resolver. Tests cover both path choices.
Load a version with a JavaScript sidebar packages/docusaurus-plugin-content-docs/src/versions/__tests__/loadVersion.test.ts, packages/docusaurus-plugin-content-docs/src/versions/__tests__/__fixtures__/site-js-sidebar/*
Added a site fixture with version 1.0.0, its documents, and a JavaScript sidebar. A production-mode test checks that the loaded sidebar contains hello.
Converting a versioned sidebar to JavaScript during development requires restarting the server. The change is otherwise mergeable with this limitation understood.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 4d10f
JavaScript versioned sidebars now execute through the existing configuration loader. No new attacker-controlled entrypoint was demonstrated, but these files must be trusted as executable configuration. Deployment-specific write access and build permissions were not available for verification.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A selected versioned JavaScript sidebar can execute code with the loading process's authority, rather than merely supply sidebar data. Effective exposure depends on that process's filesystem, credential and network permissions; those deployment permissions were not supplied.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
inferred — The examined entrypoint consumes site configuration and filesystem paths, not a demonstrated public request input. Exploitation would require influence over the selected file or its path inputs. Existing current-version JavaScript loading supports the trusted-configuration interpretation, but equivalent trust for versioned artifacts remains deployment-dependent.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — JSON fallback applies when the JavaScript candidate is absent, not when JavaScript loading or validation fails. Such failures propagate through the existing error path; module execution has already occurred before configuration validation can reject its result.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Re-resolve the sidebar when its extension changes.
If a developer converts a versioned sidebar from JSON to JavaScript while the dev server is running, the cached metadata still points to JSON. getPathsToWatch() also watches only that selected path, so the new JavaScript file is not picked up until a restart. Watch both candidate paths and resolve the sidebar again on content reload. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
