Pre-flight checklist

  • I have read the Contributing Guidelines on pull requests.
  • If this is a code change: I have written unit tests and/or added dogfooding pages to fully verify the new behavior.
  • If this is a new API or substantial change: the PR has an accompanying issue (closes #0000) and the maintainers have approved on my working plan.

Motivation

docusaurus deploy sets USE_SSH from the origin URL with hasSSHProtocol() when neither GIT_USER nor USE_SSH is set. Its SCP-style regex already makes the user@ part optional, but that branch only runs when URL.parse() returns null. When the user is left out, URL.parse() succeeds, because a host such as github.com or an SSH config alias such as github-work is a valid URL scheme:

URL.parse('git@github.com:facebook/docusaurus.git')    // null -> regex -> true
URL.parse('github.com:facebook/docusaurus.git')        // protocol "github.com:" -> false
URL.parse('github-work:facebook/docusaurus.git')       // protocol "github-work:" -> false

git reads all three as SSH remotes. The alias form is common when one machine uses several GitHub accounts through ~/.ssh/config. For those remotes, deploy stops with "Please set the GIT_USER environment variable, or explicitly specify USE_SSH instead!" instead of deploying over SSH.

The fix runs the existing SCP-style check whenever the URL has no ://, which is the same condition git uses. A Windows drive path like C:/repo also matches that regex, so it is excluded explicitly and stays false, as before. URLs with :// behave as before (ssh: only).

Test Plan

New cases in packages/docusaurus-utils/src/__tests__/urlUtils.test.ts:

  • github.com:facebook/docusaurus.git and github-work:facebook/docusaurus.git are recognized. This case fails on main (expected false to be true) and passes with the fix.
  • C:/projects/docusaurus.git and C:\projects\docusaurus.git are not recognized.

All 37 tests in urlUtils.test.ts pass, and oxfmt --check passes on both files. I ran only that test file, not the full suite.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved recognition of SSH Git addresses that omit the protocol, including host aliases and home-relative repository paths.
    • Windows drive paths are no longer mistaken for SSH addresses, while explicit SSH URLs continue to be recognized. This helps repository addresses be interpreted correctly across common formats and avoids treating local Windows paths as remote Git locations.

Walkthrough

hasSSHProtocol now detects protocol-less SCP-style addresses with or without a user part. It excludes Windows drive paths. Tests cover SSH host aliases, home-relative paths, and Windows drive paths.

Changes: SSH address detection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update SSH detection and tests
packages/docusaurus-utils/src/urlUtils.ts, packages/docusaurus-utils/src/__tests__/urlUtils.test.ts
hasSSHProtocol checks SCP-style syntax when parsing fails or the input lacks ://. The pattern accepts ~ in paths and excludes Windows drive paths. Tests cover implied SSH addresses, host aliases, home-relative paths, and Windows drive paths.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to e3e2d

The change appears ready to merge after normal checks; no unresolved issue was established in the changed SSH detection behavior.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 91134

More Git remotes can automatically select SSH deployment, but explicit authentication choices and configured deployment destinations remain unchanged. No introduced security defect was established. Actual SSH key selection depends on the deployment environment.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — For the confirmed deployment consumer, control of the source origin can influence automatic transport selection when authentication overrides are absent. It does not alone select an arbitrary push destination; execution still requires invocation of deploy and uses the configured repository with the invoking environment's SSH authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Origin-based inference remains conditional on GIT_USER being absent and USE_SSH being undefined. Explicit USE_SSH=false prevents inference, while USE_SSH=true already selects SSH. HTTPS credential construction remains confined to the non-SSH branch.

Addressed both review points: SCP paths starting with ~ (host:~user/repo.git) are recognized now, and any single-letter host is treated as a Windows drive (as git does on Windows), so drive-relative C:repo paths no longer count as SSH. Tests added for both; all 11 hasSSHProtocol expectations pass.
