Motivation

Mailtrap is adding GET /api/marketing/stats. It returns aggregated Email Marketing numbers (sent, delivery, bounce, open, click, spam and unsubscription counts and rates) across campaigns and automations: the same figures as the Email Marketing Stats Overview. The endpoint is token-scoped: the account comes from the API token, and the path takes no account id. This PR adds it to the Python SDK with the signature from the OpenAPI Python code sample (mailtrap/mailtrap-openapi#62).

Changes

  • client.marketing_stats_api.marketing_stats.get(params=mt.MarketingStatsFilterParams(...)) calls GET /api/marketing/stats and returns MarketingStats with the 13 counts and rates, unwrapped from data
    • start_date and end_date (YYYY-MM-DD, inclusive) are required. sending_domain_ids, sources and email_service_providers are optional. When given, they go out as key[]= arrays, as with StatsFilterParams
    • sources accepts only "campaigns" and "automations". Any other value raises pydantic's ValidationError when the params are built, so no request is sent
    • unlike stats_api, marketing_stats_api needs no account_id on the client
  • Add the runnable example examples/marketing_stats/marketing_stats.py: the last 30 days, then campaigns only, sent to Google and Yahoo. Also add its README entry under Stats API

  • Drive-by: bump mypy in tox.ini to 1.19.1. CI installs the latest pydantic, and pydantic 2.14 types TypeAdapter's argument in a way mypy 1.15 can't infer, so the type check fails on main too. 1.19.1 is the newest mypy that still runs on Python 3.9

How to test

You'll need an API token for an account with Email Marketing traffic (a sent campaign or an automation) in the last 30 days.

  • All marketing traffic: MAILTRAP_API_KEY=<token> python examples/marketing_stats/marketing_stats.py. The first line prints MarketingStats with the 13 fields (delivery_count, delivery_rate, bounce_count, bounce_rate, open_count, open_rate, click_count, click_rate, spam_count, spam_rate, unsubscription_count, unsubscription_rate, sent_count). They match the Email Marketing Stats Overview for the same range
  • Campaigns only: the second line (sources=["campaigns"], email_service_providers=["Google", "Yahoo"]) prints numbers no higher than the first
  • Sources: sources=["automations"] returns automation traffic only. The campaigns-only and automations-only counts add up to the unfiltered call. sources=["newsletters"] raises ValidationError without sending a request
  • Sending domain: sending_domain_ids=[<a sending domain id>] narrows the numbers to that domain. An id from another account raises APIError (400, Sending domain does not exist)
  • No data: a range with no traffic returns every count and rate as 0
  • Bad date: start_date="2026-13-01" raises APIError (400, Invalid start_date)
  • No account id: works on a MailtrapClient(token=...) created without account_id
  • Permissions: a token scoped only to a sending domain or a sandbox raises APIError (403)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added marketing statistics for campaigns and automations, with date-range and optional sending-domain, source, and email-provider filters.
    • Added an example showing how to retrieve unfiltered and filtered marketing statistics.

Decisions:
- token-scoped like email_campaigns_api, so it needs no account_id
- sources is a Literal list, so a typo fails before the request is sent
- filter params follow StatsFilterParams; lists go out as key[] params

📝 Walkthrough

The SDK adds a marketing statistics API with response models and query filters. The client exposes the API, and a new example runs unfiltered and filtered queries for the last 30 inclusive UTC dates.

Changes: Marketing Statistics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define and wire the marketing statistics API
mailtrap/models/marketing_stats.py, mailtrap/api/resources/marketing_stats.py, mailtrap/api/marketing_stats.py, mailtrap/client.py, mailtrap/__init__.py, tests/unit/api/marketing_stats/*, tests/unit/test_client.py, tox.ini
Adds statistics response models and date and list filters. The client exposes an API that sends filters to /api/marketing/stats and parses the response data. Unit tests cover response parsing, query encoding, API errors, filter validation, and client access. The mypy pin changes to 1.19.1.
Add a runnable marketing statistics example
examples/marketing_stats/marketing_stats.py, README.md
Adds unfiltered and filtered queries for the last 30 inclusive UTC dates and prints both results when run as a script. The README links to the example.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 1871d

The SDK change is mergeable after normal checks. Confirm that any equivalent in-app examples remain accurate.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1871d

The new operation reuses existing credential handling and HTTPS transport, with filters confined to query parameters. No introduced authorization weakness was identified, but account isolation and token permissions depend on remote enforcement that this review could not verify.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The intended data scope is aggregate campaign and automation activity for the token's account, potentially across all sending domains and providers when optional filters are omitted. The SDK requests that scope, but the inspected evidence does not establish the maximum remotely accessible account or asset scope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Credentials pass from MailtrapClient headers into a dedicated HttpClient Session, which constructs an HTTPS URL for the configured host. Caller-controlled marketing filters remain query values; they do not supply alternate credentials or change the resource path. This preserves the existing SDK credential-propagation pattern.
  • observed — The supplied remote-authorization proof gaps remain unresolved. Unit tests simulate successful and rejected responses, while the no-account_id test checks wrapper construction only. Neither establishes deployed token permissions, cross-account isolation, or ownership checks for sending-domain filters.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Resolve the authorization uncertainty with an authoritative endpoint contract or remote integration evidence covering token permissions, cross-account isolation, and foreign sending-domain IDs. This is a verification proposal, not an observed vulnerability.

Decisions:
- pydantic 2.14 types TypeAdapter's argument as TypeForm[T]; mypy 1.15 infers Never and fails on every dump_python call
- 1.19.1 is the newest mypy that still installs on Python 3.9, which the CI matrix runs the type check on

Decisions:
- Example window was 31 days: both dates are inclusive, so use today minus 29
- Example computes today in UTC, like the email campaigns example
- Example passes sample domain IDs, like the stats example; the unused parameter only ever sent None
- Inline the fixed path; _api_path helpers elsewhere exist to build ID paths
- Tests compare the whole model and parametrize the near-duplicate cases

Re CodeRabbit's nitpick on examples/marketing_stats/marketing_stats.py (confirm the in-app code examples are still accurate): the Mailtrap app's Python code samples cover sending and inbound only, and there is no stats sample to keep in sync. This file is the only example for the new endpoint, so nothing else needs updating.
