Each replication stream can buffer up to logical_decoding_work_mem of decoded transactions before spilling to disk. The writer's parameter group sets this to 1000MB, a value carried over from the 4xlarge, and we run three to four streams. On the 2xlarge that is a third of the free memory. Set it to the postgres default (64MB) in the replication connection's startup options, with a flag to raise it.

For the same property, **the URL wins over the `Properties` argument**. `Driver.connect()` first copies the supplied properties, then calls `parseURL()`. That method puts URL properties in the highest-priority set and merges other values only when a key isn’t already present. So `options` in `...?options=...` overrides `options` in `DriverManager.getConnection(url, props)`. URL query values are URL-decoded; encode spaces and other special characters in `options` accordingly. ([github.com](https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/blob/REL42.7.3/pgjdbc/src/main/java/org/postgresql/Driver.java))

Merge JDBC URL options with the replication setting.
DATABASE_URL can provide a raw JDBC URL. In pgJDBC 42.7.3, a URL options parameter overrides PGProperty/OPTIONS. That can replace logical_decoding_work_mem and restore the larger parameter-group value.
Preserve existing URL options, but append the replication -c logical_decoding_work_mem=... setting after them before opening the connection.

On October 19 at 06:10 UTC the Aurora writer ran out of memory. Free memory went from about 10 GiB to 0.25 GiB within a minute and stayed there with 4.5 GiB of swap. At 06:13:51 the OS killed the walsender for
invalidator_prod_i_0c907b7d59b93c1aeand Postgres restarted. API and reactivity were down from 06:10:42 to about 06:14:15. The day before, at 05:10, the writer hit the same drop (0.33 GiB free) and survived; that time the ELB replaced our host. The writer is now a db.r8g.2xlarge. 43.5 GiB of its 64 GiB is shared memory, which leaves about 10 GiB for everything else. The parameter group still sets
logical_decoding_work_memto 1000 MB, the value we used on the 4xlarge. Every replication stream (aggregator, singleton invalidator, and one invalidator per machine) can buffer that much decoded WAL before spilling to disk. That's three streams on one machine and four on two, so 3 to 4 GiB of the 10 GiB.This sets
logical_decoding_work_memto the postgres default of 64 MB in the replication connection's startup options, so it no longer depends on the parameter group. The:logical-decoding-work-mem-kbflag can raise it, and new streams pick up the change. Why I think the walsenders matter here:
This does not prove the walsenders made the allocation that ran out. We had no per-process memory history (Enhanced Monitoring and Performance Insights are off). Either way, it takes a large and fixed reservation out of a small budget.
Spill risk is low. The largest decoded transaction in the ten minutes before the incident was 13.8 MB. Larger ones spill to local storage, which has 124 GiB free.
Verification
-c logical_decoding_work_mem=65536shows64MB, overriding the parameter group's 1000 MB.instant.jdbc.wal-testopens a replication connection and checks the setting with a flag override. It fails against the old code (64MBinstead of32MB) and passes with this change. clj-kondo is clean. Not in this PR
work_memis 128 MB (256 MB per hash node, more with parallel workers), also carried over from the 4xlarge. We should lower it once we've measured temp spills.Related: #2944 keeps the WAL listener retrying after the outage, and instantdb/pele#3 lets Kick reach the database. Neither prevents the OOM.
