Stop a self-hosted server buffering every transaction in memory - #2935
Conversation
The actual cause of the heap exhaustion behind the 2026-09-29, 10-01 and
10-02 outages, found with a heap dump analysed in Eclipse MAT. A retained
WalEntry's path to its GC root:
WalEntry -> triple_changes of instant.grpc.WalRecord
-> PersistentQueue -> Atom -> instant.reactive.store/sync-table-txes
sync-table-txes is an in-memory buffer of the last 10,000 transactions,
which upstream's own comment calls a placeholder. It is filled when
(when (or (config/dev?) (seq sync-subs)) ...)
and the self-hosted image sets neither PRODUCTION nor STAGING, so get-env
falls through to :dev. Every self-hosted server therefore buffers every
transaction for every app, though nothing reads the buffer except sync
tables. The cap is by count, not bytes, and it only evicts when a newer
transaction arrives, so after a burst of large transactions it holds
gigabytes of WAL records indefinitely -- including while idle, which is
what made this look like a leak. Now filled only for apps with sync-table
subscriptions, as on Cloud.
Also caps the aggregator's sketch cache, MAT's other large holder. It was
hard-coded at 4,096 entries of ~1.6 MB each, ~6.5 GB against a 4 GB heap;
with 2,866 attributes across apps it can exhaust memory before reaching its
own limit. It is a read-through cache over sketches persisted in Postgres
(find-or-create-sketches! on a miss, save-sketches! every pass), so
eviction loses nothing. Now 256 by default, overridable with the
aggregator-sketch-cache-max-size flag, read at start-up.
The grouped-queue commit beneath this fixes a real bug but was not this
one: its recovery paths never fired while the heap filled.

Validate the sketch-cache size before building the cache.
instant.util.cache/make applies .maximumSize only when :max-size is truthy. A stored false flag therefore creates an unbounded cache. The flag schema accepts any value, and update-flag! writes the supplied value without validation.

Retain WAL records for subscriptions that are still initializing.
process-wal-record buffers a record only when sync-subs is non-empty. get-stale-sync-subs excludes registered subscriptions until :sync/sent-tx-id is set. A WAL record committed after the repeatable-read snapshot can therefore be processed by the separate invalidator queue before the ua/vfuture initializer calls sync-query-update-init. The final refresh scans only sync-table-txes, so it cannot send that missing record to the new subscription.
Change the buffering decision to include registered subscriptions that are still initializing, while keeping refresh delivery restricted to subscriptions with an initialized cursor.

sync table is not released, and is marked experimental. prod already has this bug, so i think we can accept it.

@stopachka Understood. This change keeps the existing production buffering condition. Given the experimental status of sync table, I agree that the initialization race can remain outside this PR’s scope.
Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for the race?

A cap of 256 everywhere would make Cloud reload sketches from Postgres more often for no benefit, since its heap can hold 4096. Prod keeps 4096. Other environments get 256, including self-hosted servers, which run as :dev.

🟡 Changes recommended
The buffering gate excludes initializing subscriptions, so writes during the first snapshot load on dev/self-hosted servers can be omitted from catch-up and leave clients missing changes.

What changed in this PR
This PR addresses self-hosted heap exhaustion described in #2931 by reducing transaction buffering and aggregator cache retention.
Changes:
- Removes unconditional development-mode transaction buffering, using sync subscription eligibility instead.
- Lowers the default sketch cache limit to 256 outside production, retaining 4,096 in production and adding a startup flag override.

Fixes #2931. This is offered as one way to fix it; feel free to take a different approach or close it.
invalidator.clj: fillsync-table-txesonly for apps with sync-table subscriptions, dropping the(config/dev?)clause. The self-hosted image sets neitherPRODUCTIONnorSTAGING, so every self-hosted server runs as:devand buffers every transaction for every app. The buffer is capped by count, not bytes, so after a burst of large transactions it can hold gigabytes indefinitely.If the
:devbuffering is relied on locally (for example, to inspect sync-table state without a subscription), the alternative is to leave this clause alone and have the self-hosted image set an environment that isn't:dev. We weren't sure what else that would change, so we kept the fix narrow.aggregator.clj: cap the sketch cache at 256 entries outside prod (prod stays at 4,096), overridable with theaggregator-sketch-cache-max-sizeflag and read at start-up. It was 4,096 entries of about 1.6 MB each, which is more than a 4 GB heap. It is a read-through cache over sketches persisted in Postgres, so eviction only costs an occasional reload. This is the second part of #2931 and is independent of the first. Happy to split it out.We have run both changes on a self-hosted server since 2026-10-02. Retained WAL records stayed at 3 through about 2,600 transactions of controlled load, and the live heap levelled off at about 570 MB. It previously filled a 4 GB heap.
