Summary

  • Introduces optional subject management allowing students to toggle/exclude non-mandatory subjects (e.g., Higher Math, Biology for Science; Finance, Production Management for Commerce; Economics, Logic, Islamic History for Humanities).
  • Adds is_optional column to subjects table and excluded_subject_ids (JSON) to users table with database migration.
  • Updates StudyTrackerController and UserProfileController to respect excluded_subject_ids, omitting excluded subjects from tracker progress, statistics, and public profile syllabus breakdown.
  • Adds an optional subjects selection UI inside the curriculum & group switch modal in SubjectChecklist.vue.
  • Fixes ForumController to query only trackable subjects and nodes (is_trackable = true).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Choose optional subjects to exclude from your study tracker and syllabus progress.
    • View chapters grouped by their parent sections, with collapsible groups and completion counts.
    • Expand multiple subject cards independently and use the floating button to return to the top.
  • Improvements
    • Forum subject lists now show only trackable subjects and nodes.

📝 Walkthrough

The tracker now supports excluding optional subjects from a user’s curriculum and groups syllabus chapters by parent. Forum subject lists now filter out untrackable subjects and nodes.

Changes: Curriculum tracker

Layer / File(s) Summary
Optional-subject fields and defaults
database/migrations/*, app/Models/Subject.php, app/Models/User.php
The migration adds optional-subject status and user exclusion fields, and marks specified subject IDs as optional. The models cast the new fields and allow assignment of exclusions.
Tracker data and syllabus response
app/Http/Controllers/StudyTrackerController.php, app/Http/Controllers/UserProfileController.php, resources/js/pages/Tracker/Index.vue
Tracker responses provide optional subjects and saved exclusions. Syllabus progress filters excluded subjects and returns parent metadata. The page passes tracker data to the checklist.
Optional-subject selection
resources/js/components/tracker/SubjectChecklist.vue
The checklist lets users select optional subjects to exclude and submits those IDs with curriculum changes. The curriculum modal is wider.
Grouped chapter views
resources/js/components/tracker/SubjectChecklist.vue, resources/js/components/tracker/SyllabusBreakdownModal.vue
Both views group chapters by parent and support collapsible groups. The checklist also allows independent subject expansion and adds a scroll-to-top control.

Forum subject lists

Layer / File(s) Summary
Trackable forum subjects and nodes
app/Http/Controllers/ForumController.php
The forum index and create queries filter subjects and nested nodes by trackability.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d40ea

Optional-subject flags may land on the wrong subjects, or on none, depending on the environment's subject IDs. Direct requests can also exclude mandatory subjects and inflate public profile progress. Fix both before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to d40ea

The change is primarily account-scoped, and existing ownership and profile-privacy controls remain in place. Server-side optional-subject eligibility, preference replacement semantics, and deployment compatibility warrant attention, but the inspected changes do not establish a material security regression.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A crafted exclusion request can change the authenticated caller's saved subject visibility and associated public syllabus presentation. The inspected mutation does not select another user. Separately, the privileged migration changes shared subject classification for all users of that database.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The curriculum mutation remains inside authenticated, throttled routing and derives the write target from request identity. Profile syllabus calculations derive curriculum, exclusions, and completion ownership from the route-resolved target user. These controls are unchanged relative to the supplied merge base.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Validation completes before curriculum, group, and exclusions are submitted in one user-row update. There is no new controller-level multi-record mutation or progress cleanup. Re-including a subject restores visibility over retained completion data rather than reconstructing deleted state.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If mandatory-subject inclusion is intended to be a server-enforced contract, validate exclusion IDs against the allowed optional-subject set rather than relying on the UI. Explicitly define whether preferences persist across curricula and whether omitted or stale requests may replace them.

Invalidate the existing forum cache when applying this filter change.

Both actions reuse forum_filter_subjects, but this migration updates subjects through DB::table(...), so SubjectObserver does not clear the cache. An entry created by the old query can therefore continue returning untrackable subjects and nodes for up to one day. Clear the key in the migration, or ensure deployment performs the same invalidation.

Make the sub-group header keyboard-operable.

The header has only a mouse @click handler. It has no role, no tabindex, and no key handlers. Every named group except index 0 starts collapsed. A keyboard user therefore can't expand those groups, and can't view or toggle their chapters. The chapter rows below already handle the keyboard; the header doesn't. Use a <button>, or add the same role, tabindex, and key bindings, plus aria-expanded.
